This river just keeps on improving with big weights being returned in recent matches.
Due to flooding at the Emlagh stretch of Donamon, Sensas Connacht had to find a different venue for their match last Sunday.
Ballinasloe is fishing well
With the slight rise in river levels Ballinasloe seemed a good bet and sure enough the fishing was second to none with big bags of roach for all anglers.
The usual suspects took top honours

Michael Flanagan from Midland Angling reports on some super fishing with black lures:
Our good pal Marty Smith was back over from Macklesfield near Manchester last weekend and had a few lovely days on Ennell, Derravaragh and also met the anglers on Glore.
Perch love black lures
I really can’t remember when Marty starting coming to the Midlands, but he is well known on the angling scene here in Mullingar and had adopted Mullingar as his 2nd home. We had some fantastic perch fishing on Ennell last Friday in perfect condition and once again black rubber lures worked a treat. On some drops the lures just hit the bottom and were sucked in like sweets, the perch colour also worked well and I coped some of these up in Wild total Outdoors last week. I let the cat out of the bag as they say and told Sean Matthews, that that’s the one working.
Sean Matthews in Total Wild Outdoors
I dropped into Wild Total Outdoors last week and checked out some of the fantastic gifts for Christmas and the New Year. Sean Matthews was busy packing up some of the Stanley thermal flasks, which are a lifesaver in the cold frosty days on our Lakes and Rivers. As mentioned above I also copped some of the rubber lures I use for the perch fishing, and the bargain bucket has some of the Black, White, and Red Bulldawgs that worked on Derravaragh some weeks back. Drop into Sean or Brian this week in Wild Total Outdoors, and they will certainly point you in the right direction when it comes to catching fish. The lads also make a mean Cup of Tea and Coffee, we are told and this I have to check out. Mind you I might have to bring a pinch of Salt for some of the Fishy stories told on these Coffee breaks.

50 angling development projects from across the country set to receive funding from Inland Fisheries Ireland
Inland Fisheries Ireland has awarded 50 angling development projects with funding to the value of €500,000 in total as part of its Capital Works Fund. The projects, which focus on improving angling access and infrastructure, will now be delivered in 2017. In total, applications for over 100 projects were received bringing the overall value of projects looking for funding to above €2million.
The Capital Works Fund was announced in October 2016 with local groups and individuals including local development associations, tidy towns, angling clubs and others invited to apply for funding. The scheme is part of Inland Fisheries Ireland’s National Strategy for Angling Development. The Strategy aims to ensure that Ireland’s fish stocks and angling infrastructure are protected and enhanced with a view to ensuring a sustainable habitat and delivering the economic, health and recreational benefits they offer to communities across Ireland.
Inland Fisheries Ireland is aiming to grow the angling sector’s socio-economic contribution of €836 million per year by an additional €60 million annually through the strategy. This will be achieved by driving angling participation among domestic and overseas visitors, which in turn is supported by improving access to fishing and developing angling infrastructure.
Inland Fisheries Ireland received 90 ‘Expressions of Interest’ across 21 counties in addition to the applications received for the Capital Works Fund. Feedback has been given to those who completed ‘Expressions of Interest’ and potential has been identified across a number of projects. It is anticipated that Inland Fisheries Ireland will have further funding for projects in this area in the New Year. For more information on Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Capital Works Fund and the projects receiving funding in this funding call, visit www.fisheriesireland.ie/funding.

Alan Lawless chairman of AWOL Results give a good round up of their trip to Courtlough on Sunday December 18th…
Sunday 18th saw the AWOL group fish their 3rd leg.
19 anglers fished Courtlough, landing 162 fish. The lake fished well in the morning with a least 2 anglers reaching their peg total of 4 fish per peg on the second peg. Looking around the lake I could see some catching on lures and more catching under the bung.
We had a surplus of money this year( due to paper bought last year), and I put this towards a voucher for a turkey . Malcolm had kindly donated a 5ltr leg of beer to the event, thanks Malcom.
It looked to me the the lake had a little lull around midway, but started fishing again two pegs from the end. With a good few anglers reaching the peg limit on the last peg. Donal marked a fish of 34cm to win the Gobbler.
Gary won the keg.
The days Results are as follows.
1st Marius Lincevicius 18 fish
2nd Hubert Smith 18 fish.
3rd Noel Shields 15 fish
Longest fish caught today went to Gary with a fish of 58.
Many thanks goes to The team at Courtlough, for having the lake in excellent condition and for supplying fantastic food after the competition.
Next leg is in Curragh Springs in January.
Tight Lines
The Leinster Youths and Juniors fished the last leg of their interprovincial qualifiers on Sunday. The venue was Kilgorman and all anglers managed double figure bags. Plump flounder put in a good showing and there was some solid fishing from all anglers.
Gold medal winners were Sean Cushen for the juniors and Sean Carley for the youths.
The Irish Federation of Sea Anglers want to say well done to all who took part and qualified for team Leinster, and to all the parents who helped out during the year.

In advance of the first leg of Daingean Match Angler’s winter league there were over 30 anglers signed up. The competition was fished on Sunday in shirt sleeves conditions but the fish were not so enthusiastic about the mild weather. Julian Kendrick reports that it was a tough old day on the canal.
Pat Bartley
Pat Bartley fishing on peg 37 (rowing course), had the heaviest bag at the weigh in with a fantastic catch of micro roach for 1.380kg. In 2nd place was Darius Karaliunas with 1.340kg and hot on his heels in third was Colin Oliver with 1.300kg. Section winners were Colin 1.3kg, Jimmy Kelly with .950kg, Jeff Morison with 1.120 kg and Alan Larkin with .500kg.
Lets hope a bit of settled weather improves the fishing for the next round.
