Keady and District Angling Club reports a great turn out and a great day’s fishing for those who fished Pauric Donnelly’s School Aid Romania fundraiser. The day was a big success for the anglers and for Pauric who worked hard to get sponsorship for this worthy cause.

Go fishing…

While members of the Keady & District Angling Club fish for most species of fish, the Club is a Pike (Esox lucius) angling club. The club organizes regular Pike fishing events, usually held on a Sunday, with fishing running from 11am until 4pm. The Club also has a proud tradition of encouraging the young people from the wider area to pursue angling as a hobby and this is one of the most worthwhile aspects to club life.

A love letter to a lure…by Mick Flanagan

A certain lure has caught the eye of guide Michael Flanagan….he is dazzled and in awe of it’s beauty….He reports:

No I am not joking this beautiful looking pike lure is certainly eye catching, and last week I was chatting to David O’Malley about the range of Westin Lures soon to explode on the angling scene. I picked up Mike The Pike, and also checked out some other mouth-watering lures from the Westin catalogue. Westin have come up with fantastic names for their predator lures, which include, Percy The perch, and Tommy The trout. Yep you will never take the child out of the angler.

Watch out for these lures early in the New Year, or drop in David at his angling & jewelry shop in Dominick Street. David has some special offers on lightweight spinning gear ideal for the jigging for perch, or early season trolling next year for trout & salmon. David also has a huge range of jewelry for your partner or loved one, and jewelry is an ideal gift to build up Brownie Points for a few days fishing.

When up with David I also checked out the brilliant book on Mullingar by Matt Nolan. This masterpiece of a publication was launched in 2015, and is packed with wonderful photographs from the Mullingar area. It’s an ideal Christmas/New Year gift for those who have not picked up a copy. Keep this in mind if you have family members or friends coming home from abroad this time of year, and it will be a fantastic way of Reeling In the years with all the family. You can pick of a copy of Mullingar/Time Goes By in O’Malleys and proceeds from the book sales goes to North Westmeath Hospice.

Flanagan brothers and pals hook up for some good pike at Derravaragh

Ray Lynch
Catch of the Week goes to Ray Lynch for the fat pike he caught on Derravaragh last Friday.

Michael Flanagan from Midland Angling and his younger brother enjoy some good pike fishing…

We had a few unbelievable mild days last week, and it really seems to get the predator fish on the move. On Derravaragh my younger brother J.J. had a few friends out pike fishing and I hooked – up with them for a few hours.

John McAlister
John McAlister

Ray Lynch was in the thick of the action and had a cracking pike on a Black/White and Red Bulldawg. I did a few hours with John McAlister and we boated up on five pike on a variety or colorful soft and hard lures.

John also done a bit of jigging for perch and pulled a small pike up from 40ft of water on small perch imitation rubber lure. Like many of our waterways Derravaragh is brutal low for this time of year, and its not easy launching your boat at Donore shore this times, so take care if heading out in the coming weeks. Plus the shallow rocky area is to be avoided near Cooloure Bay, right into the mouth of the Yellow River.

Newly developed Donamon stretch fishing well

The Suck Valley Angling Hub report that the newly developed stretch at upper Donamon was put to the test on Sunday and it past with flying colours…

Fishing the pole at Donamon
Fishing the pole at Donamon

Cathal Hughes from Galway won the Suck Valley Angling Hub match fished on Sunday, 11 December with 263 roach on the pole for 11.520kg.  Mark Leonard on the next peg was second with 10.340kg on the pole also and bill Cassidy was third with 10.300kg on a 6 metre whip.

Cathal Hughes was happy with his catch and win

It’s fantastic to see such good fishing on a stretch recently developed by IFI and proving that their hard work was put to good use. The hard work put in by Bill Cassidy and Andrew Ely on this stretch is very much appreciated by everyone their trojan efforts and much arguments with the relevant authorities to get this stretch developed will in the long run be very much worth it. Well done lads.

Friendship and fishing on Lough Ramor

Killinarden Angling Initiative headed to Ramor yesterday

The weather was good to them and the fish were feeding heavy! KAI thanks everyone who donated and to the anonymous donor as without them the trip to Ramor would not have happened.

Some decent fish for very first timers…

Smiles for all the crew…

Special mention…

We don’t normally do this single out individual members of KAIs youths/Juniors.
On Sunday we noticed 2 lads willing to stop fishing & help others out weather it was unhooking a fish ,or sorting out a tangle or just helping out their pals in KAI the first is the youngest of the 2 lads Is young Luke well done.

The second lad is Ethan Byrne, the older of the two lads .
Sometimes with all the excitement of kids of different ages ,Catching probably their first ever fish which we had one or two today Can Shadow all the good stuff going on in the background kids willing & Abel to help their friends out when our attention is with something else.

It’s something that really, is fantastic to see unfold.

Well done Ethan &Luke

Go fishing…..

A close finish for anglers at Carty Land & Sea shore league

Stefan Martin from Killybegs Mariners SAC reports on the fishing at Carty Land and Sea league at Fintra beach, Donegal…
Sunday December 10th: Another lovely day on the beach today for Cartys land and sea sports shore league leg 4 in Fintra, a gentle breeze created a nice surf and some fine slabs of flounder over the 30cm mark were reeled in from the suds early on.
Things got quiet as the tide filled and bits of weed hampered those at the ends of the beach and it was a close finish in the end with only a few cm separating the top 3. Winner on the day well done to Marius Kontautus and 2nd place prize went to Stefan Martin and best Junior was won by Billy Gilvarry. Longest fish prize was a fine 37cm flounder for Pat Cunningham. Last leg of this league will be on Rossnowlagh on December 27th. Well done to all

Rocks and sand

Good reports are coming in from members fishing beaches and rocky shores. Some fine fishing over that sand was had at one remote venue.  Although the beach was empty of people it was crammed full of fish with loads of treble and double hauls after 10 minute soaks the fish were feeding hard on the sandeel being disturbed by the waves, big fat flounder and chunky turbots and beautiful silver bars of sea trout all gently unhooked and released darting quickly off under the waves again, such an abundance of life in a seemingly quiet location, fantastic.

Swapped the sand for the kelp on the 13th before dusk armed with a selection of lures. Some great action on the modern lures even a cast and a slow retrieve has the paddle tails working and wriggling along and through the kelp beds. A cast a slow draw just above the kelp with the lethal blue firetail worm proves irresistible to the predator pollack some lovely fish still about in the weeks of Christmas. Walking miles along the shores a nice ground sea creating a loud salty foam rolling off the rocks, flicking in lures the ammonite shads bounced into the bottom being nailed by wrasse on the drop, Donegal Bay majestic again

Leitrim County Council has awarded Ballinamore in Leitrim a grant of €100,000 as a result of a funding submission to assist in development of an angling facility at Garadice and Kiltybarden Lakes. The resource will include accessibility for wheelchair users and a special area dedicated to youth angling. Another Life: When seabirds go hungry, who is to save their share of fish? -Irish Times

A long spell of high pressure steamrolled the inshore ocean to a silent parade ground, its empty days aching for the flights and cries of all the seabirds that weren’t there. Our terns and gannets have headed off to Biscay or west Africa. Irish puffins are now fishing for little capelin off Newfoundland. Guillemots are far offshore, shearwaters somewhere off Brazil and petrels perhaps as far as Namibia….
