I love this time of year when the weather plays ball, sea temp still good for another while yet. Catching up with fishing friends, and meeting new ones, lately I met Lough Derg guide Pierre Monjarret, & his dog “Guinness” http://www.pierremonjarret.com/fr/ after a brief introduction via a mutual friend, & a chat on tactics for the day, it was time to go, a 30 minute drive had us surveying the shoreline for any signs of activity.
Pierre Monjarret and Sean Jordan in the sunshine
There were a lot Mullet moving in all directions as the tide flooded, “Bass, & Mullet often roll together” I told Pierre, we quietly got into position where we wouldn’t spook them…. It wasn’t long before Pierre met his first Wexford Bass with an aggressive take on a sub-surface lure, & gave a feisty account of itself, before being released after a quick pic, he got another couple before a “double hook-up” with myself.
In all, a perfect day, with sunshine, fishing with friends old, & new….and some fish…….

The Irish mens and womens teams who won Gold in the World Championships
It has been a pretty cold week, though most days saw periods of dry, sunny weather. Great conditions to be out and about in but from an angling point of view a quite enough few days. The big news of course was Ireland historic victories at the World Shore Angling Championships in Wexford…
On Thursday evening last week official confirmation came through that both the Irish Men’s and Women’s teams took the Gold Medals in the World Shore Angling Championships. With 18 countries and around 250 anglers taking part it was no mean feat, particularly as this was the women’s first time fishing the event. The Lisa Gormley took individual Silver and Anne Whitty won individual Bronze. For the men, Alan Mulcahy won individual Gold and Harry McKee won individual Silver. A huge well done to all involved! Inland Fisheries Ireland was a proud sponsor of the event and the Irish teams taking part. Apart from the financial sponsorship for the event and the teams, staff attended each day of the competition (and the practice day) to peg out the beaches – up to 3km in some of the venues fished, release all caught fish, tag as many bass as possible, and at the end of each day comb the beaches to ensure no hooks or line were left behind to cause a problem for other users of the beaches. Staff also played a key role in logistics and comms through the supply and operation of quads and radios.

Though many charter boats are finished for the winter period, Mark Gannon in Courtmacsherry is still getting out whenever conditions allow and he reports that there are plenty of mackerel, codling, coal fish and good size pollack around. Meanwhile at the other end of the country the third leg of the Carty’s Land & Sea Sports Shore League took place on Rossnowlagh Beach where some lovely flounder to over 40cm were landed.
Coarse anglers are seeing some decent catches fisheries like Tooman’s and Oaklands but many of the wild venues really slowed down with the cold snap. Portumna, which we reported on last week, went from 90lb bags to under 5lb!

All of us reading this update online or in our email probably take the world wide web for granted, but surprisingly almost one in six adults living in Ireland has never used the internet. The Digital Skills for Citizens Scheme is designed to provide citizens who have never used the internet with the confidence, motivation and skills to reap the benefits of participating in today’s digital world. The call for proposals is open to all community, voluntary and not-for-profit organisations to apply for grant assistance to provide basic digital skills training courses in cities, towns and villages across all Counties. Full details about the Grant Scheme are available on the Department’s website at http://www.dccae.gov.ie/communications/en-ie/Digital-Strategy/Pages/Get-Citizens-Online.aspx
If there is anyone in doubt about the cold spell, today Met Eireann issued a Low Temperature Warning for Munster, Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal. Away from the south coast, temperatures overnight will fall to lower than -3C locally. In general high pressure will dominate Ireland’s weather over the weekend and early next week keeping it cold and mainly dry. Friday night will be very cold with a widespread sharp or severe frost with ice in places and patches of freezing fog. Lowest temperatures of -5 to 0 degrees, coldest in Connacht and Ulster. From Tuesday milder, breezier, wetter weather is expected.

How it all happened
It all kicked off with a wonderful opening ceremony on Saturday 12th November which began with a parade of all competing nations which will see the flags of each nation hoisted and carried from Clayton White’s Hotel to the National Opera House, Wexford. It was followed by a ceremonial event at the Opera House attended by the Mayor, Local Councillors and TDs.
This World Shore Angling Championships which operated a Catch and release policy and showcased the best Ireland has to offer to Shore Anglers as competitors battled to catch a wide variety of fish including Whiting, bass, dabs, flounder, turbot, dogfish and other species. The event had a significant economic impact on not only the town of Wexford but the country as a whole and is a wonderful showcase for Wexford, IFSA and the sport of angling as a whole.
The IFSA are delighted they have been chosen to host this event as it is both a great honour and a great opportunity to promote the southwest and indeed Ireland and its tourism product as a whole. This championship will be supervised by IFSA officers, stewards and volunteers. The IFSA would like to acknowledge the help and support of Inland Fisheries Ireland, Fáilte Ireland, Wexford County Council, National Opera House, Gardaí, Coastguard/RNLI, and our many sponsors, this event would not be possible without their support.
The third leg of the Carty’s Land & Sea Sports Shore League took place on Sunday 20th November on the beautiful Rossnowlagh Beach, in South Donegal. Conditions were clear and bright with a touch of frost in the air. Thanks to everyone who came and took part and well done to Gerry MC Brearty on winning overall and getting the longest flat which was a fine flounder of 42 cm and to Shane Rochford on coming 2nd. Species caught were flounder, turbot, seatrout, coalies and whiting. In total 67 undersized fish were also caught in the competition.

Signs of Activity !
If you do come up to see the redds try not to disturb or interfere with this natural event. Keep a good distance and don’t be walking on beds were fish are active.
Few Irish sporting estates can rightly assert to be World-class but for one it is a fully justified claim, County Donegal’s Glenmore Rivers Estate. Unique in the quality of the game angling, deer stalking and rough shooting it offers, Glenmore goes a step further and into a league of its own.
In excess of sixty kilometres of pristine estate-run rivers teem with salmon and trout while the 24,000 acres (10,000 hectares) of shooting ground is home to herds of Red deer. Throughout the winter the hillsides and bogs provide unrivalled woodcock and snipe shooting; the numerous lakes give opportunities for outstanding duck shooting and trout fishing.
Lanesboro and Ballyleague hosted the 9th World Championships Predator Boat Fishing with Lures competition in October, attracting fishermen from seventeen countries.
