It is understood a significant number of fish died in the Altagoan River, which flows into the larger Moyola River, on Friday.

The Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) has identified the cause of the fish kill as a slurry discharge….

Difficult conditions for Killybegs Mariners at Inver

Killybegs Mariners SAC report on their latest league outing which took place on Friday last:

Difficult conditions at the league outing in Inver last Friday night after a deluge of rain the Eany river dumped tonnes of leaves on the beach and baits were masked once they settled on the bottom. On low water a distance cast out past the leaves with big scent baits landed a nice treble shot of 37cm and 31cm and 31cm flounders for Stefan Martin who won both cash prizes on the night most points and also the longest fish 37cm flounder (€80).

An otter appeared at one stage chewing a fish beside the lads at the car park wondering what was going on . No outing next week but on Sunday leg 3 of the Land and Sea Sports league is in Rossnowlagh fishing 2 – 6pm. Well done to all

Perfect picture of pristine Perch from Ennell

On Saturday Michael Flanagan took to the waters at Lough Ennell.  The pike showed no interest but Mick tells us that he had some cracking perch. Including this lovely 1lbs 8oz one shown in the photo.  He had to fish jigs very slow as the fish weren’t easy to find, and hard on the bottom.

Freshwater Detective course with Ken Whelan in Connemara 18th -20th Nov

A great opportunity to avail of a Freshwater Detective course with Ken Whelan.

This fully residential wildlife course takes place at Aasleagh Lodge, Leenane, Co Galway.
During your visit, Ken will guide you on a unique freshwater trek from your base in Aasleagh Lodge to some of the more remote rivers and hill loughs of the west of Ireland. He will reveal to you an enchanting and fascinating world, largely hidden from view to the casual visitor and bring to life the interdependence of all life forms inhabiting the local river valleys and lake shores.

aaskeagh-lodge-and-delphi-freshwater-det-course

Over the weekend, you will learn the skills of a Freshwater Detective, trek along the banks and shores of a range of pristine waters, follow otter and mink trails and catch a glimpse of the many bird predators such as herons, mergansers and the elusive kingfisher, which inhabit this wild, unspoilt and remote area.  You will visit rivers which are home to 10,000 year old populations of silvery sea trout and the majestic, wild Atlantic salmon. Learn how a range of predators interact with these and other fish species such as the ubiquitous native brown trout and the rare Irish arctic char. Over your two day visit Ken will teach you how to identify the insects and other invertebrates in the rivers and streams you visit and how to detect the presence of a number of furtive predators. Your adventure will include visits not alone to remote tributaries of the Erriff such as the Glenlaur Stream and Tawnyard Lough, but also neighbouring catchments such as the Carrowniskey River, a gem of a tiny sea trout and salmon river, bursting with life and flowing over a bed of ancient sandstone.

An abundance of salt water beauties for the bass guide in Cork

The Carlow guide Richie Ryan , based in Cork I hasten to add , was on to apologise about rubbing it in about his end of season bumper crop of bass. To use the word coined by President Elect Trump , he won biggly !
Richie’s end of week foray produced 10 bass on one short afternoon session with a further 12 the following day. The guide said that the first four casts on day one produced four bass , the first one over 9 Lbs weight ! The inner Harbour water temperature was 49 degrees Fahrenheit on the day whilst outside was 52 degrees , which may have accounted for the willingness of the bass to feed.

richie-ryan-nov-2016-pic-2
A large flock of feeding birds was targeted and to Richie’s amazement , on each cast the lure had hardly hit the water when his rod doubled over. The settled spell of weather , coupled with the favourible water temperature, probably accounts for the bumper end of season he remarked.
