Jack Tisdall reports on the sixth round of the Waterway’s Ireland NCFFI Irish Team Qualifiers took place over this weekend.

The event was fished on the Lower River Bann at Portglenone, Co Antrim.

The River was very high and although weights were low, plenty of small fish were caught on the Float Qualifier on Saturday.

Most anglers opted for Flat Floats and running water rigs on the Pole in excellent weather conditions.

Winner of the sixth round of the Float series was Paul Hutchman (East Belfast) fishing the pole at peg 45, catching 25 fish for 2.480 kgs.

Runner up was Phillip Walton (East Belfast) with 22 fish for 1.800 kgs., in third place was Nick Howell (Erne Anglers) with 16 fish for 1.780 kgs.

The Feeder Qualifier which will be used to select the Feeder team for the World Championships in South Africa in 2013, was also fished on the Lower Bann in glorious

Weather conditions on Sunday.

Winner of the Qualifier was Sean Murray (Erne Anglers) with a catch of 40 fish including some better quality Roach for 6.040 kgs, runner up was Colin Martin (East Belfast)

Colin caught 50 fish for 5.950 kgs.  In third place was Brenton Sweeney (Kingfisher) 5.870 kgs.

Colin Martin secured the overall championship with 5 points,  last year’s winner Brenton Sweeney was runner up with 6 points and Vincent Walsh was third on 8 points.

The Ireland team manager Mark Theedom thanked Magherafelt District Council, Waterways Ireland  and in particular Derek Buckley who assisted in gaining access to the venue; he also thanked the sponsors Waterway’s Ireland for their continued support.

Mark will now select his teams following the FIPS announcement of venues in mid November.
