Carrickmacross Coarse Angling and Youth Development Club has provided 20 youngsters with the opportunity to get involved in angling and the great outdoors this week. The club has been holding summer camps for the last two years and this year the camp is fully subscribed with 20 children and youngsters taking part in the 5 day event which is running from Monday 1st July to Friday 5th July. The event is sponsored by Inland Fisheries Ireland and supported by the Irish Angling Development Alliance. On the second day of the camp I visited the club members and youngsters at the Brothers Lake in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan. The clubs helpers had turned out in force again to ensure that students have all the support and advice that they required to get a good start to their new hobby of angling. The informative workshops expertly delivered by club members covered all areas important to the beginner such as, setting up your gear, tying knots and setting up float and feeder rigs. After the demonstrations from the club members the children were given the opportunity to practice these newly learned skills for themselves. Then it was off to the stands to catch a fish and happily all of the youngsters have caught fish within the first two days. There was a great atmosphere in the camp and not even the rain could dampen the enthusiasm of both club members and children alike. The future of coarse angling looks very bright in Co Monaghan.
