John Quinlan reports on the bass around Cahersiveen…

While decent sized bass have been scarce in Kerry this month there seems to be plenty of 40 to 50cm fish.  Malcolm Gilbert from Cornwall fished the Dingle peninsula with a couple of friends for a week and managed about 70 bass but only 1 over 5lbs.  In the Waterville area it’s been the same story though during the recent cold spell even the smaller fish were hard to come by.  Chris Nealms and myself managed to catch quite a few bass but nothing bigger than 3.5lbs.  Most bass are being caught on bait with lug worm seeming to give best results.  As soon as the weather warms up we should see the beginning of the spring lure fishing season.  From now on if the weather gets milder bass will move into the shallows to feed on the crabs that are peeling.  It’s a great time to catch bass in shallow water.  We still have some vacancies available for spring fishing so get in touch.
