Trout anglers had some exceptional fishing on the Cong
Canal last week. This unique piece of water opened on St Patricks
Day and many anglers fished all through the night and into the next
morning to maximise their chances of hitting into a big fish. While
some left the river with nothing but disappointment others had the
memories of a catch of a lifetime. Michael Hennessy had 3 specimen
trout, 5lbs 10 ozs, 7lbs 10 ozs and 10lbs 10ozs.

Lucky anglers landed trout on fly, spinners, dead bait and worms.
All the fish landed were  were released unharmed and there
were a number of Fisheries staff on hand to ensure that these
unique trout were handled correctly. Ross Macklin of
Lee Reservoirs Angling Services
reports that they had a great day on the Cong Canal on a social day
out with  group of Cork anglers. Ross bagged two double figure
trout and five specimens in total for himself, making it an
exceptional day of trout angling.

Night fishing in
very cold temperatures was successful and certainly was worth it
with combinations of methods working using bait and lures as
conditions changed.
Jorge Alvarez Vicente also had a personal best trout of 8lbs
while fishing with the group.

Ross advises that coarse angling will come into its
own very soon down in Cork and they are hoping to land some big
bream and hybrids next month back on home turf. Ross reckons
variety is important to keep ones interest in angling and has no
doubt that Ireland still remains a top destination for any visiting
anglers when professional guides can help them turn an average day
into an exceptional one.
