Rob Love, Carton House Fishery Manager, is delighted that the weather has improved for anglers…

Thank God that there is a flip side to the weather breaking over the last week or two in that the fishing has been quite excellent.

The humid dull weather has been a godsend to anyone fishing on the Rye Lake with trout in far better condition and more inclined to be tempted by a fly passing in front of their nose.

Evening Sedge hatches continue to feature however daytime fishing can also be productive with large bushy flies creating some disturbance in the water.  As has been the case over the last while, Woolly Buggers in natural colours seem to be particularly in vogue with the resident trout.

Some are actually quite large – yours truly having 3 fish to 4lb in an hours fishing on Tuesday morning. Intermediate lines or floating lines with a long leader are just the ticket.

Water clarity has improved over the last week and is close to its normal gin clear levels again.  Hopefully the heavy rain forecast for the next 24 hours wont have too much of a detrimental effect.

Fishing on the Sheet of Water has also improved over the last week.  A variety of lures and buzzers seem to find favour with the trout during daylight hours while in the evening as with the Rye Lake there are fantastic hatches of Sedge – the ‘rise’ coming on just as light is fading.

The Sheet of Water is a more forgiving stretch of water and is perhaps more suited to the beginner / improving angler and it is far more sheltered than the Rye Lake which helps with anyone brushing up on casting technique.  Fishing on the Sheet of Water is only permitted when with a guide.

Go fishing…

A day permit is €50.  Anglers should note that this means they can fish for brown trout on the Rye Lake, brown trout on the Rye Water and rainbow trout on the Sheet of Water (all fly only) in this timeframe – so if one is not working the other might.
