Michael Flanagan, Angling Guide and Reporter, was serenaded by screaming “Reels” earlier this week on Lough Lene. Michael and Thomas McMullan dropped down to the Midlands for a days fishing on the lough. This time Thomas’s 11 years old son Peter was on board, and he is certainly a chip off the Old Block.
They were blessed on Lene with a good fishing day, it was the first good hatch of Olives Michael had seen this year. More importantly the fish were up and on the feed.
The day was slow to start and in early morning we just produced one small brownie on a wet fly. But as lunchtime closed in a few Olives started to hatch, and some super browns and rainbows came on the feed. Micahel tells us the change was was amazing, they had just fished the same drift, and no fly and no fish, but as soon as the Olives appeared it was “Feeding Time at the Zoo” as they say.
The drifts were quite long, and they move fish regularly as Michael kept the boat on line and fish sucked and slapped at the Olives. Returning back on the drifts Micahel dropped a small lure out on the troll to gave young Peter a break from casting. As he watch the Hummingbird scan the lake, they trolled across a deep drop off, and coming out of 30ft of water back into 8-10 ft he got a savage take. Eventually they played out this fish, and it rattled the scales at 4lbs 9oz.
LENE ANGLERS
On the same day Michael met Lough Lene committee members Pat Keenaghan and Frank McKeown two former Golf club Captains of Mullingar Golf Club. How they sort out days for fishing and golfing we just don’t know. The lads had a super day and he photographed them with some nice rainbows.
