Michael Flanagan, Angling Guide and Reporter, tells us he lashed a few flies across Sheelin on Tuesday of this week. There were no May Fly, and it was a very changeable fishing day. He had teamed up with Aengus Byrne of Intel and they struggled in the early morning just jabbing one fish for their efforts. Just before their stomachs started to rumble they had drifted across Derry Point, and were in open water out from Church Island. Now the wind was blowing up, and they were struggling to fish in very squally conditions. Michael told Angus it was rods in time, and they battled 3 foot waves back to Sailors Garden to have lunch.
Here they dined with two great characters from the North of Ireland, John Webster of Antrim and his angling pal George Hall of Armagh. The lads were into their 4th day with only 2 fish for their efforts, but lost a few and were enjoying the trip on Sheelin.
Having swapped a few fishy tails Michael and Aengus drifted back out on Sheelin, and few Olives were appearing. Sure enough the fish followed, and in one hour Aengus and Michael moved 5-6 fish, boating two lovely Sheelin Trout. Michael had a cracker weighing 3lbs 6oz, and Aengus boated a lovely fish of 1lbs 15oz, and lost another. It was all over as quick as it started, and they had a break and a Kit-Kat before leaving Sheelin.
