Despite the closed season for bass , Eire Bass  guide Richie Ryan continues to have success  fly fishing in deep water with clients catching pollack on his favourite marks. Two Dublin based anglers returned to fish the fly with the guide again this year and had fish on practically every cast.

pollack

Richie tells us of a recent outing with group  of Dutch anglers who had booked a session aboard his boat Sea Hawk. Having been out fishing pollack himself on the fly the previous day on a good mark, the guide decided to take the tourists to the same location. The  three anglers were using traditional  spinning rods and reels and a variety of lures. The tidal and weather conditions were exactly the same as the previous day but no hook ups. None of the anglers knew how to fly fish but keen to show the anglers the fish were there Richie decided to cast a fly allowing each of them in turn to retrieve. Again the fly returned a fish per cast whilst the other methods caught nothing! Only after an hour or so had passed and the currents changed did the spinning rods start to pick up fish and  to Richie’s delight, all rods were bending with pollack . It just shows how effective the fly can be when other methods are not working.
