Angling guide Michael Flanagan reports on the recent fishing at Lough Ennell…

Last Sunday Lough Ennell Trout Angling Association hosted the Christy Sleator Perpetual Cup in very calm and bright conditions. As it was the last official club competition also up for grabs was the Tyrrell/McKeever Trophy for Angler of the year. Ennell proved a tough nut to crack last Sunday and at the 7pm weigh-in at Whitebridge Bay 4 fish were presented. The lake was alive with trout pitching all over the place, but would not look at our beautiful presented flies.

On the day L.E.T.P.A. member Joe Doherty of Clane had the winner a lovely fish of 2.296lbs, and his angling pal Pat Dunne finished 3rd with 2.016lbs, with Mullingar Angler Brendan Murray separating the Clane lads by taking 2nd place with 2.182lbs. Presentation took place in Whitebridge Bay.

John Tyrrell competition captain of L.E.T.P.A. thanked all who supported the 2014 competitions, and Jack Sleator and the Sleator family for sponsoring last Sundays prizes. Jack was on hand for the presentations along with daughter Jade, and son J.P. That evening the angler of the year was announced, and this year’s winner was Vincent Murphy of Tubberdaly near Rhode in Co.Offaly. Unfortunally Vincent was not present for the presentation, and his angling pal Christy Dunne accepted the Tyrrell/McKeever Trophy from John and Alan Tyrrell sons of the late Mickie Tyrrell.

Casting back on Sunday September 21st Ennell anglers hosted the O, Malley Cup. On the day John Brennan was Top rod with 2.430lbs, 2nd Niall Kenny 2.316lbs, 3rd Donal Stenson 2.278lbs, and 4th was Sean Goulding with 2.232lbs.

This coming Sunday October 5th Lakeland Anglers hold their end of season competition. It takes place on Owel, Ennell, and Derravaragh with an 11am start and weigh-in at 8pm in Caffreys Lounge Mount Street.
