Small boat anglers out of Cobh have had some great fishing outside Cork Harbour recently as a result of the settle conditions. Many of the boats have been after blue sharks (and anything else they fancied while on the water). Jim Clohessy was out with his Team Skua members Rob and Gavin. They had some beautiful sharks to the boat along with some lovely red gurnards and pollack.
Boats in the Bella Vista fleet had good fishing too, rays, bass, pollack and more being caught regularly. They are also seeing good numbers of shark landed and photographed. One fish they had was not brought onboard for a photo though. Despite being well practised in landing and safely releasing sharks from small boats Dirk Wolthuis opted to release the biggest shark to the Bella Vista fleet this season at the side of the boat. When confronted by the 3m blue he knew he didn’t want to share deck space with that many teeth.
Charter boats too are reporting good fishing. James Linehan on the Deora De has also been getting good numbers of shark as well as some good days of ground fishing.
The 49th Cobh Internation Deep Sea Angling Festival is under way at the moment. The competition finishes up tomorrow evening. Good luck to the competitors and wee look forward to bringing you the full results on Monday.
Go fishing…
