Alan Lawless chairman of AWOL Results outlines the basis of the club:
I am the main organiser in a national winter league bank fly-fishing competition in Ireland. Over the last number of years this style of fly-fishing has grown hugely throughout this country and it has a large base of anglers regularly fishing our developing fisheries. Likewise competitions have developed and are now a main fixture in the angling calendar for our competitors. The competition we host is run over five legs on five different lake venues with each competitor putting four of his or her best results to accumulate their final score. The league is run on a catch and release basis and is scored on a points for length system. Prizes include each leg winner, second and third with the overall winner, and runners up receiving the silverware at our end of tournament dinner. Last year was our first year and moving on from its huge success we are developing the league into an annual event. We currently have limited the events to twenty anglers due to the size of the venues and the large interest in attending the competitions. The level of angler’s competiting are of international standards with all anglers having represented their country in Fips Mouche and Home international competitions on several occasions, the competition is also covered by our national magazine and through social media outlets.
Recent trip
Laois was the venue and anglers Marius & Darius got some cracking fish on a very cold day. Alan says it’s to see the lads getting some practice in.
