Padraig Carroll reports from the Midlands…

On Sunday 19th August the Grand Canal Anglers held their annual Johnny Cunningham memorial angling competition at Whitehall, Tullamore.

Johnny Cunningham is a well known name among anglers in Tullamore and many more anglers would have known Johnny from Cunningham’s fishing tackle shop in Durrow, Co Offaly.

Anglers traveled from near and far to try and get their hands on the prestigious Cunningham trophy. Conditions looked perfect for the event with it being warm and overcast. The fishing started off well and plenty of roach and bream were landed until predatory pike started turning up in numbers at each swim.

Results
- 1st Denis Coyne 7.5lb
- 2nd Joe Mc Evoy 6.75lb
- 3rd Trevor Wykes 6.45lb
The club would like to thank Johnny’s wife Marian for presenting the trophy
