Congratulations to Dean Murray who is the NCFFI All Ireland Canal Champion of 2024 with an overall weight of 16.46kg!

Twenty Seven anglers turned out for the 2024 edition of the championships last weekend. Five sections were chosen for the two-day competition, spread out between the Millennium Bridge, Town, and Heffernan’s stretches of the Grand Canal at Daingean.

Murray’s canal bream tipped the scales to winning weights

The anglers were met with cold conditions on day one and the fishing was poor. With the normal roach population seemingly not there only very small fish were caught with the exception of those who managed a tench or bream for a section win. An overnight frost didn’t help for day two, but the bream showed in several pegs providing notable catches to 13kg.

  • 1st Dean Murray 16.46 kg
  • 2nd Vlad Alexandru 13.22 kg
  • 3rd Bob Hulme 7.34 kg
  • 4th Colin Oliver 6.99 kg

Well done to Dean and Vlad, both fabulous young anglers and also to Bob and Colin, who both showed their class.

Section Winners

  • Day 1: Jimmy Kelly, Ron Durkin, Pat Bartley, Richie Keegan, Dean Murray

The organisers thank to all those who took part, Waterways Ireland and especially the staff in the Blackthorn pub in Daingean for their hospitality for the draws and the presentation (and great food, well worth a visit).
