Michael Murphy reports from loughs Conn and Cullin:
On Sunday 18th Crossmolina Angling Club held a dual competition on Lough Conn – The Aidan Connor Cup and the Michael Benson Shield. Nineteen anglers aboard ten boats fished in bright sunshine weighing in two trout above the measure. Michael Monaghan took the Connor Cup with his trout weighing 0.785 kg and David Connor took the Benson Shield with his trout weighing 0.710kg.
On Thursday 15th The Foxford Angling Club held a catch and release competition on Lough Cullin kindly sponsored by The Foxford Lodge. Richard Mc Hale came out the winner with two trout measuring 84 cm in total. In second place with one trout measuring 34 cm was PJ Tiernan and in third place Harry Feeney with one trout measuring 30 cm.
Large numbers of spent Mayflies were observed across all areas, especially in the late evening, when trout were also seen actively feeding. Weather is affecting fishing to some extent with large hatches of Mayfly tailing off now. Fish are mainly being caught on dry Mayfly and spent patterns when fish are feeding actively and on wet fly patterns when no surface action is evident.
