The Department of Economics at the National University of Ireland, Galway, in association with Inland Fisheries Ireland, is conducting a survey of coarse anglers who fish in the Cavan and Leitrim area.
The survey is designed to examine three things:
the site characteristics that play an important role in the choice anglers make when choosing between fishing destinations,
the value an angler places on a day spent fishing
and to gather information that will facilitate better management of fisheries.
The survey should take approximately 15 minutes. Survey respondents should have visited at least one of the five sites being surveyed: Killykeen Forest Park (Lough Oughter), Eonish (Lough Oughter), Dernaferst (Gowna), Church Lake (Gowna) and Garadice lake. Links containing maps and descriptions are provided below, for any angler who is not fully aware of the exact location of any of these sites.
Thank you, in advance, for your response. Anyone who wants any further information or would like to make any comments about the survey may do so by contacting J.Deely2@nuigalway.ie

Go Fishing…
Bannow Bay Angling club was founded in 1995 by a group of anglers in the Bannow/Wellingtonbridge area to cater for all types of shore angling, fishing in the estuary and on beaches along with rock fishing in the Hook Head area to give its members a wide variety of fishing and to cater for all age groups.
Luke Aston from Carrigaholt tells us that after a choppy week the weather settled down on Friday and they had a good day at sea. Customers enjoyed catches of Bullhuss, Congers and Skate. Sunday saw a very windy day at the back of the pier but they had some very steady Ray fishing and thornbacks up to 8lbs.
The weather was nice and sunny on Monday although the sea was still a bit rough. Luke fished in shelter and had a lovely day with Conger over 30lb, Bullhuss and Ray’s over 10lb. Yesterday they had a small window in the weather and got out onto the reefs west of Loop Head. The reward was lots of good Pollack which is always great to catch.
Meanwhile Séan Maguire’s Lady Gwen II fished at anchor on Monday and it made a nice change. They had a few dropped tope runs and lost one at the surface but great fishing otherwise. A young customer on board sea fishing for the first time surprised everyone with dogfish, bullhuss, and thornback ray.
Yesterday saw good fishing out towards the Atlantic for the Lady Gwenn, but a little bit fresh so they finished off the day in the calm waters of the estuary.

Guide Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane where it has been slow going for salmon and sea trout anglers…
3/8/16 Lough Currane was on the wild side. A few boats ventured out but sadly failed, but in their defence the conditions weren’t great for my Noble Sea Trout. On the River Inny, Mr. Colin Lynam caught two fine Salmon in the 5 lbs. class and both caught on the fly. Wind West and strong and overcast with heavy showers.
4/8/16 We start on the River Inny and in the angler’s own words and I quote, “Vincent, Great fishing reports. You thankfully sent me to river on my annual visit to Waterville. Great fishing and a lovely 8lbs. Salmon, a ball of silver for my efforts. Caught on stoats tail. regards Paul Stevens”. Now we cut across the Valley to the Lough Currane. Mr. Colin Lynam, while fly fishing with his Gillie, caught a fine 6 lbs. Grilse and finished their day off with a 1 ½ lbs Sea Trout and for the rest of the angling community, no comment. Wind NW fresh with reasonable cloud cover.
5/8/16 There was 1 Sea Trout caught by a Swiss angler, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and for the rest of the Lough Currane Anglers their professionalism has a lot to be desired in all departments. On the Inny front in the past couple of days, local Anglers have procured a few Bars of Silver and one angler in question was Mr. Rod Robinson, who caught a fine Grilse which I might add He sportingly returned. Just for the record I didn’t hear of any rod benders on the Inny today, but you can say with reasonable doubt that some angler had his ball of Silver. Wind SW light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover and very warm.
6/8/16 Lough Currane was on the foggy side or was it my Noble anglers couldn’t see through the silver cloud to manipulate his or her’s fly or lour, or was it purely lack of ability to catch my Noble Game Fish and as they say every cloud has a silver lining but sadly that wasn’t the case today. Wind SE then veered SW with very low cloud
7/8/16 Lough Currane was on the wild side with a strong SW wind blowing across the lake, a few boats did venture out, but sadly their lines were slack, by the end of day. They had failure written all over their faces, not very impressive in my opinion and the same can be said for their fishing skills, so the least said the soonest mended. Wind as all ready stated with reasonable cloud cover. I know what a few anglers would say when reading today’s notes and yes and we know where the wind is coming from.
8/8/16 All quiet on SW front in all departments, which was surprising with a nice wind from the NW the only defense I can give to the pontificating Anglers is that it was bright all day, as my Noble anglers went searching for that illusive specimen Sea Trout or a fine Salmon. Sadly their lines were slack all day and it was the same story in the trolling department. Need I say more.
9/8/16 Straight to the action and Catch of the day and that goes to Dr. Tim Gleeson, Tim caught a cracker of a 14 lbs. Salmon on the troll, while fishing with his Gillie. Now we head for Sea Trout department, Cork Angler, Mr. Tom Murphy was in good form with his fly rod again today on Lough Currane, so on that note I will hand you over to Tom and his story of his day, in his own words and I quote, “Went out for a few hours this afternoon. Fishing was slow but picked up with the wind. Had a few juniors that were undersize, list a very good fish but managed to hold on to this one. Brought up a few nice boils as well. If conditions stay the same for the rest of the week, fishing could be good.”
Tom’s Fine Sea Trout
Now we head up stream to the upper Lake and Lough Namona. A Swiss Angler caught a fine 3 lbs Sea trout on the drift, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and for the rest of the angling news there isn’t any. You can say without any fear of contradiction that is your ration and if I’m wrong you can take it as read that the anglers that didn’t report their catches failed miserably in their duties but we will give them the benefit of doubt. Wind North with reasonable cloud cover,
That is your ration from the last week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.
The rivers and lakes of Waterville drain a large catchment and are regarded by many as the foremost Salmon and Sea-Trout fishery in the country. The lake system is well developed with access to boats and guides being readily available to the tourist angler. The Sea-Trout caught here are renowned for their size and quantity. OVER 450 anglers descended on Cushlough Bay on Lough Mask last week to battle for the World Cup Trout Fly Championship.
Clare man Thomas O’Loughlin beat off stiff competition from across Ireland and overseas to take home the cup and prizes in the sixty-third year of the competition.
For his efforts in catching an impressive 12 trout, the Corofin angler took home €3,000, a 15 horse power Suzuki engine, a Sage fly rod and a watch.
Other winners in this year’s competition included Jonathan Crevan from Roscommon who took second place with eight trout and local winners Adrian Gorman and Danny Joyce in fifth and sixth place respectively. ..

Jason Nash from the Bandon Angling Association reports on the catches and conditions on the River Bandon…
No more rain in sight as the Bandon is once again down to a trickle. Plenty of salmon were caught last week as the small flood quickly receded and the colour faded. A good mix of stale and fresh fish were met, mostly grilse and smaller summer salmon. Fresh fish are still entering the system at the moment and there is always a chance of hooking up, especially in this dull, windy weather.

For the new year, Bandon Angling Association have set up a new website which you can view here. A new guiding service has been launched in conjunction with Jason Nash, Peter Aspinwall and Phil Dewey. Details of the guiding service are provided on the website and they are looking forward to making memories and enhancing people’s fishing experiences on the river Bandon. Marlene Mc Laughlin reports from Cashel Trout Fishery:

Dungiven’s Stephen McLaughlin bagged one which weighed 2lb 2ozs while Raymond Pollock (Portstewart) bagged three weighing 7lb 5ozs. Ian Millar and Andrew Logan (Dungiven) released five trout between them which took little buzzers. Jim Hasson (Derry) released four while Dungiven’s John Hasson caught and released similar numbers using small lures.
Belfast anglers, Jim Patterson, Billy Kirk, Rob McFarland and Ivan Thompson released a total of 21 trout between them some of which were estimated to be into the double figures. John Millard (Derry) was delighted to catch his first ever trout on the fly, two in fact, which weighed 5lb. Derry’s Aidy Askin bagged two for tea which weighed 5lb 3ozs and released four more which fell to the Connemara black, the Greenwell’s glory and the cove pheasant tail nymph. Jim Hasson (Derry) released four trout which all took the wee dry flies. Jim Russell and Danny Walker (Monkstown) bagged four weighing 13lb 10ozs and also released one and lost four which fell to the Walker Special dry fly. Daniel Reilly (Maghera) bagged two, released two. His trout for home weighed 6lb 10ozs.
Joe Convery and John Francis Bradley (Draperstown) had a lovely evening catching a few trout one of which Joe kept for tea. Billy Ferguson (Derry) released around ten over two short days which weighed an average of 3lb. Michael Anderson (Antrim) released a couple also which took small nymphs.
Derry’s Ciarn and Sean Kelly used their favourite patterns to bank a couple while Jason Seaman and David Watson also from Derry released six in total which took wee egg flies and buzzers. John Hasson and Martin Bradley released five and two respectively. Joe McGuigan (Draperstown) and Jonathan Selfridge (Maghera) banked a couple each which took orange cat’s whisker. Conan Gallagher, Eddie Manthorpe, Kevin Gallagher, Danny McDonaghue and Seamus Cusack were all on catch and release tickets. Each one hooked at least a couple of trout each which took their favourite lures and nymphs.
Extremely well done to all!

Blackwater Salmon Fishery
Blackwater Salmon Fishery has 3 beats downstream of the weir and 2 upstream of the weir. Blackwater Salmon Fishery offers fishing on approximately 5 miles of the river Blackwater. The fishing is spread throughout the middle section of the river to offer good sport throughout the fishing season. Due to the location of the beats, fishing can still usually be offered in low or high water. Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery
Ballyduff Bridge fisheries control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.
