Dundalk man John Kelliher is part of the 2016 World Masters Irish Fishing team which will take part in the World Masters Trout Fly Fishing Championship in Galway this week.
The event gets underway today and runs until Sunday on the lakes of Lough Corrib, Lough Inagh, Lough Fee and Lough Muck.
Amongst the competing countries are France, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Scotland, Sweden, South Africa and the United States….
There is still time to submit your club team for the NCFFI Junior Club Championships event that takes place on Saturday. We are fishing the Newry Canal where most fish were caught at 6m last year – so ideal for some whip fishing.
A bit of water at the Rock Pool at Delphi - very welcome!
David McEvoy reports from Delphi where low water was a real problem last week, but rain is improving prospects…
It’s hard to believe that a good night’s rain could make people so happy. Water levels were getting really desperate here at Delphi in the last week, or should I as few weeks as the last nice fall of rain we had was the 20th and the 21st of May. In the interim rain has been promised on and off but it never materialised. Weather apps on phones were being checked on an hourly basis, so much so that we were all ready to throw the phones in the lake, if it was deep enough!!
A bit of water at the Rock Pool at Delphi – very welcome!
For the past few days there has been rain promised but only small amounts fell. The river was still well below 0 and needless to say we weren’t expecting much last night either. I got a pleasant surprise on my way to work this morning especially as I wasn’t expecting much given that the local river the Bunowen was much the same as it has been. Once I could see Doolough valley I thought I was hallucinating as there were cascades of water coming down the mountain. As I got closer I realised it was actually water and I must say I never saw waterfalls looking so pretty in all my life.
Boats had to be bailed which is actually a bit of a novelty and believe it or not the river had risen to 65. There was only 13mms in the rain gauge, but there was obviously a lot more on the hills. The river was very dirty this morning which is to be expected but it was actually flowing!! So hopefully in the next couple of days I will be reporting on shoals of salmon running the river. There is more rain forecast today and then it looks like it will dry up again but at least this water will give us a reprieve for the coming days.
We did actually land two fish here since my last update. Ian Carroll had a fish off Finlough of approx. 7lbs on a Delphi Collie and Kurt Roth having spent all day in the boat on Doolough decided to throw a few casts at the mouth of the Glenummera, even though there was no flow coming into the lake managed to land a fish of approx. 8lbs on a Red Frances.
I should also mention tried hard all week despite the very difficult conditions. Bill Middleton was one of these and his persistence was rewarded with a fish of over 4lbs on the Falls Pool of our neighbouring Erriff river.
There is nothing off the river yet but hopefully it may produce in the afternoon as it should be fishable by then.
At Delphi Lodge, with many years of experience with the timing of the best runs of fish, we have in place a price system that offers both great value fishing and lets our anglers know when they have the best chance to catch a fresh run spring salmon or a summer grilse or Delphi sea trout.
World-class instruction at Ireland’s most beautiful fishing lodge
At Delphi Lodge we are able to provide world class tuition through our resident instructor, Robert Gillespie. Fly fishing instruction can be as simple as a short visit for half a day or built into a fully tutored course over a few days while staying in the Lodge. Robert Gillespie is one of the worlds most qualified fly casting/fishing instructors and is available for one to one tuition in addition to offering excellent tuition to small groups and families. Robert was the first person to successfully take all three FFF (Federation of Fly Fishers) examinations at the one testing event, doing so in November 2004 on the Beaverkill river at Roscoe, New York State.
A tutored course at Delphi Lodge, with Robert Gillespie, is a wonderful, relaxing and learning experience for anyone who wishes to take their first steps into this rewarding form of fishing. For many fly fishing becomes a true passion.
Dave Dolan landed this 25.5 lb Mirror carp at Meadow View Fisheries where fishing is reported by anglers as outstanding. The fish whose nickname is “Crop Circle” was caught on a cranky cricket rig with a pacific tuna boilie.

Philippe Collet, Campbell Baird and Pat Burns on the Boyne at Trim
A French film crew assisted by well-known international fly angler Campbell Baird visited the Boyne and Fane recently to showcase some of Irelands top wild brown trout fisheries. The main part of the film was being shot on Lough Sheelin during the mayfly but it was decided to visit some rivers as well to highlight the quality of wild brown trout fishing available on the rivers as well. The crew was hosted on the Boyne by Trim Athboy and District Anglers, Rossin Slane and District Anglers, Drogheda and District Anglers and on the Fane by the Dundalk Brown Trout Anglers Association. Some fantastic fishing was sampled by Campbell and Philippe Collet who landed some fine wild brown trout at each location. Clubs were represented by Pat O’Toole in Trim, Peter Cunningham in Drogheda and Matt Campbell in Dundalk. It is hoped that not alone will the fishing attract additional anglers to the area but the heritage sites that line the river such as Trim Castle and Newgrange that provided stunning backdrops to the river fishing will also play an important part in attracting more visitors to Ireland.

Skipper Michael McVeigh continues to impress in the 2016 season as he catches a variety of fish and some fine skate:
Tuesday June 7th: Had a good day on the Wrecks with some nice Ling and a couple of bonus Cod. Limeburner fishing well for Haddock, Whiting, Gurnards, etc.
Thursday June 9th : Some super skate today
185lb skate171lb skate
Friday June 10th: Mackeral numbers have picked up a little – not as much difficulty getting them.
Limeburner fishing particularly well for Whiting, Haddock, Gurnards, Spurdog, Ling etc.
I had a poor day at Tope, but had reports of other boats doing fantastically well – just not there on the day for me, probably pushed away by the hordes of Spurdog.
Sand good enough for Rays (Thornback, Homlyn & Cuckoo) and Dabs but distinctly poor for Turbot, Brill & Plaice.

There are reports of good bass fishing in Cork Harbour being received at this office over the last few days. Superb bass angler Andrew Davies had 9 bass in one evening session recently. In addition, Eire Bass guide Richie Ryan landed 5 bass the following day before the weather deteriorated.
Richie says he feels guilty fishing what used to be the closed season. Marks and how they fish at this time of year is a whole new experience he says. All fish were returned safely as per the recently changed regulations. Both anglers together with bass guru Pat O Shea were involved in the bass satellite tagging program in Cork harbour over the past 2 years. We all await the outcome from that excellent project which should be available soon.

What an end to a fantastic 6 days of fishing on the Grand Canal Edenderry, it was all to play for going into the last day Friday with Del Hurst and Paul Hughes in first and second but with some good catches by Gareth Charnock, Jeff Stirrat and Danny Martin there was plenty of room for someone else to finish on top when the final all in was called.
