Some good days on Currane last week, even in bright sun

Vincent Appleby reports from a very sunny Waterville in the Kingdom of Kerry Lough Currane where 14 salmon were caught in the last week…

A picture tells a story

01 June: Today was a roaster with clear blue skies with a light wind from the west and you can say without any fear of contradistinction all anglers failed to procure my Noble Gentlemen the Salmon. Just for the record the amount of rainfall for May was 77.9 mm.

02 June: On the Day shift the least said the soonest mended and with flat calm conditions this morning and very warm, its not surprising there was little action. Come the afternoon the wind got up from the SE then veered West light, at least one boat did get a rod bender but my Noble Salmon lived to tell the story, but the same couldn’t be said for the evening shift, all the headlines go to young 12 year old, Miss Caitlin McAlister, while fishing with her Granddad, Mr. Jim Sayers, caught a fine 6 lbs. Salmon on the troll and a big congratulations to Caitlin on here first Salmon and I’m sure it will be the first of many and its great to see the youth of today taking all the headlines and it’s a pity we don’t have more young people like Caitlin on Irish fisheries. Wind as all ready stated

03 June:  Another hot day on Lough Currane today, but sadly my Noble Game Fish gave the cold shoulder to all anglers that were manipulating their flies and lours. Wind W light with bright sunshine all day.

04 June: Another blazing saddles day with a light SW wind with little to no cloud cover, so you might think there was no chance in  procuring a Wild Atlantic Salmon? well you would be wrong because those Hampshire pros showed how it should be done in this Lough Currane heat wave. First in the striking zone was UK angler Mr. Peter Ruffle of Hartley Wintney, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville Boats and at watervilleboats@gmail.com caught a fine 5 ½ lbs. Salmon on the Troll and  his good friend Mr. Nigel Henshaw also of Hartley Wintney, finished the day off with a 4 ¾ lbs Salmon on the troll, with his gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com and fishing out of Waterville Boats and at watervilleboats@gmail.com and for the rest of the angling community as they looked up to the heavens and asked themselves what are we doing wrong? Well its simple, you’re no good in the Lough Currane heat wave and all I can say is I hope I will have to eat humble pie in tomorrow’s notes. Wind as already stated and the philosophy of the day is you can’t catch him if you’re not out there whatever the conditions as proven by the Hampshire Pros.

05 June: All the headlines go to young US Angler, 13 year old Dillon Sedlack of  Atlanta Georgia, who caught a cracker of a 10 lbs. Salmon on the troll and may it be the first of many. That wasn’t the end of their action because his Big Cousin, Mr. Don Reid, of Pawlett Island South Carolina USA also got in on the act by catching a fine 4 lbs. Grilse on the troll, all while fishing with their Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com. Wind South light to fresh and overcast.

06 June:  I will start with Salmon of the day and that goes to UK angler Mr. Nigel Henshaw of Hartley Wintney, while fishing with his Gillie, caught a cracker of a 10 lbs. Salmon on the fly. In the words of  Nigel’s Gillie and I quote, “Lost one Salmon first thing this morning on the troll then lost 3 on the fly before catching a peach of a 10 lbs. Salmon on the fly”. Now to catch of the day and that goes to another great Hampshire Angler Mr. Trevor Dewberry of Blackbushe, who, while fly fishing with his Gillie Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville Boats and at watervilleboats@gmail.com , caught 3 Grilse from 3 ½ lbs. up to 4 lbs. Normally I don’t report on other fisheries but I’m going to make an exception and in my book for good reason, Trevor and Nigel’s good mate, Mr. Peter Ruffle, of Hartley Wintney, went up to Caragh lake and caught two fine Grilse on the troll. As I said the other day you can’t beat the Hampshire pros, so congratulations to them and their Gillie’s for promoting Kerry Fishing. Wind South with reasonable cloud cover.

07 June: What a morning it was for UK angler Mr. Jim Marriott of Worcestershire, while fly fishing with his gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 3 fine Grilse on a size 8 Green Peter, on a floating line. Just for the record the sizes of this fine catch, is as follows, 5 lbs. 4 lbs. and 3 ½ lbs. UK angler Mr. Peter Ruffle, of Hartley Wintney, finished his holiday off in style, while fly fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught a fine Grilse in the 6 lbs. class.  Now to the trolling department an angler fishing on his own had 1 C&R Salmon, now to the back date department, last week end there was a fine 11 lbs. Salmon caught on Lough Derriana. Wind SE then veered SW light all day with good cloud cover.

That is your ration from the last week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.

Not easy at Delphi but salmon to 20lb caught and released

20lb salmon
20lb salmon released on Doo Lough

David McEvoy reports from Delphi where the hot, sunny weather and low water is testing his anglers…

Temperatures here have been reaching in excess of 20C most days and we have had the grand total of 2mms of rain in the last ten days, all of which fell last night. The river is now below 0 and fishing is challenging to say the least.

20lb salmon Delphi
Didier Briand with his 97cm salmon, estimated to weigh 20lb, ,which was released

We did manage to land four fish since my last update, including one of approximately 20lbs. Didier Briand and guest of long standing regular Bertrand Fenart managed to land two fish. His first ever salmon was taken from the Turn Pool on the 1st of June on a Van Beck and weighed in at 8lbs 15ozs. He then proceeded to land another the following day, in Weedy Bay at Doolough that was 97cms long and approximately 20lbs. The fish was more than likely a 3 sea winter which is the norm with fish this size. Well done Didier you are either very good or very lucky. Of course I should say that he had an excellent mentor in Bertrand Fenart who had been visiting Delphi since the mid 1970’s.

20lb salmon
20lb salmon released on Doo Lough. Cacth, Photo, Release

Bertrand managed to land a fish of his own on the 2nd also. The fish weighed in at 9lbs 2ozs and was taken from the Turn Pool on a Collie Dog. The following day Bob Hadden, who it must be said tried hard all week, was finally rewarded with a fish from the Turn Pool of 8lbs 1oz on a Collie Dog.

That made a total of five for the week as Paul Wymes had landed a nice sea liced fish of 9lbs 4ozs from the Whin Pool on the 30th of May.

We have a full contingent of anglers this week and I must say they are trying hard in extremely difficult conditions. Water temperatures have even reached 18C in the past week. At the moment it looks like we will see a return to more normal Atlantic weather patterns by the weekend with rain forecast for Saturday night. Some parts of the country got heavy rain yesterday but we avoided it and got 2mms instead which did not help water levels at all.

Here’s hoping for some rain shortly!

Go fishing…

At Delphi Lodge, with many years of experience with the timing of the best runs of fish, we have in place a price system that offers both great value fishing and lets our anglers know when they have the best chance to catch a fresh run spring salmon or a summer grilse or Delphi sea trout.

World-class instruction at Ireland’s most beautiful fishing lodge

At Delphi Lodge we are able to provide world class tuition through our resident instructor, Robert Gillespie. Fly fishing instruction can be as simple as a short visit for half a day or built into a fully tutored course over a few days while staying in the Lodge. Robert Gillespie is one of the worlds most qualified fly casting/fishing instructors and is available for one to one tuition in addition to offering excellent tuition to small groups and families. Robert was the first person to successfully take all three FFF (Federation of Fly Fishers) examinations at the one testing event, doing so in November 2004 on the Beaverkill river at Roscoe, New York State.

A tutored course at Delphi Lodge, with Robert Gillespie, is a wonderful, relaxing and learning experience for anyone who wishes to take their first steps into this rewarding form of fishing. For many fly fishing becomes a true passion.

Fears for Lough Carra water supply, The Mayo News

Fears for Lough Carra water supply
Fears for Lough Carra water supply

THE water supply to up to 400 houses from Lough Carra may not be fit for consumption in the short-term, according to a local councillor, if current problems affecting the lake continue. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently changed the water quality status on Lough Carra from one of ‘good’ to ‘review’ following recent tests on the lake. As a result, the EPA will carry out fortnightly monitoring of the lake and its catchment area – something which has never occurred before…

Billy Downes reports that as of Tuesday 7th June Laune water level very low at .8m. The Laune is still fishable by all methods but a rainfall that brings the level up by .5m would be welcome.

The only few fish I heard of during the week were met by Thomas Ward on Beat 3. Tom managed to hook and play four fish in two days (Wednesday and Thursday) but he only landed one. News of any other fish/salmon is scarce other than sea trout and brown trout which our members continue to enjoy later in the day.

Beat 3:

Beat 3 is the only fishery I heard of producing fish for the past week but the Beat in in need of about two feet of water.   The Brown trout fishing continues good.  Please note that the €10 trout permit allows an angler to fish for brown trout ‘fly only’ If you want to spin or worm fish you need to purchase a €25 permit.

Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery

Ballyduff Bridge fisheries control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.

River Suck pike provide exceptional evening fishing on the Suck

Ciaran Loughnane and Niall Burke enjoyed what they considered and exceptional 4 hours trolling trip last Sunday evening. Fishing in the Ballinasloe area the two anglers caught and released 14 pike, all of which were around the 4-5 lb weight. The fish were caught using natural imitation plugs and soft baits. What really impressed Ciaran and Niall was the condition of the pike, which were all very fit and gave great sport. At times the action was explosive and both of anglers were taken by surprise when they had one take a soft bait right beside the boat as they were feeding out the lure, about 1m off the engine.
