Plenty of pollack for West Cork kayak anglers

David Norman of Angling Adventures West Cork, reports…

Thomas Jacob, a Brittany native now residing in Ireland, finally got to use the AAWC voucher his wife thoughtfully gifted him last year. We lucked out with beautiful West Cork sunshine and crystal-clear waters, though the wind proved to be quite unpredictable! The coastal breezes, which truly govern all our movements on the water, began as gentle and offshore, constantly shifted 90 degrees, and ultimately became onshore – right at the limit of what’s feasible for a guided trip.

Nevertheless, we still found plenty of exciting fishy action across all the spots we could reach! Also worth noting that we didn’t loose a single lure to the kelp or rocks deep below us and all fishes were strong releases.

Inland Fisheries Ireland re-opens Erriff, Moy and Galway fisheries

Ridge Pool at the Moy Fishery, Ballina

Fisheries had closed due to high temperatures

Monday, May 26th, 2025: Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) is today re-opening the Erriff and Moy fisheries in Co. Mayo, and the Galway Fishery in Galway city.

The three State-owned fisheries had been closed due to high water temperatures.

IFI closed the fisheries so that cold water fish species did not suffer potentially lethal angling-related stress, in addition to stress caused by water temperatures above 20 degrees.

Multiple temperature readings below 18 degrees have since been recorded at the Moy, at the Erriff River, and at the Galway Fishery on the River Corrib.

Barry Fox, IFI’s Head of Operations said: “The suspension of angling at the Moy, Erriff and Galway fisheries is now lifted.

“Water temperatures have returned to an appropriate range, and the fisheries can be re-opened.

“IFI will continue to monitor all fisheries it manages for the State.”

IFI reminds anglers that they must be in possession of a salmon and sea trout licence before fishing for these species.

Licences can be purchased from store.fishinginireland.info.

Irish Angling Update 🎣 23 May 2025

We’ve had another week of fine weather for being in the outdoors, but not necessarily for being in the outdoors fishing! While there were a few thunderstorms in places on Tuesday, some parts of the country remained completely dry for the week, with average sunshine amounts for the time of year ranging between 180% and 240% of normal and average temperatures up to 4°C above normal. The good news for the freshwater fish is that the coming weekend will bring cooler, wetter weather, with heavy rain due to cross the country on Saturday along with westerly winds which will banish the cursed easterlies, for a spell at least…

Salmon angling has been difficult during the warm, dry spell, with IFI-owned fisheries on the Erriff, the Galway Weir and the Moy, as well as other privately run fisheries – like Ballisodare – closed due to high water temperatures. The Ballisodare club took advantage of the closure to host a hugely successful Biodiversity Day on the river, which also features in this week’s Ireland on the Fly podcast, as Tom and Daire speak with Gerry Merrick, chairman of the fishery. Back to the Moy, and fisheries upstream saw a handful of fish caught, mainly on the prawn, while sea trout fishing in the estuary is really picking up. Heading south, anglers on the River Blackwater have redoubled efforts with some reports of fish in the river, but all is quiet from most other catchments in the south west, including Currane, where one angler beat the odds to land, and release, a 3lb sea trout.

Trout fishing on the loughs has reportedly been equally tough, with mayfly monsoons on Sheelin not precipitating the type of top-water banquet one would expect for the amount of fly on the water. On Conn and Cullin, there were also excellent hatches of fly and falls of spent fly, but the fish were difficult to tempt, with two competitions yielding few fish for the participants there. Away from the loughs, we have a lovely write-up from the Cashel, Golden and Tipperary Anglers Association on the stretch of the Suir they call their own and how those fishing pools got their names.

In coarse angling, there were a number of festivals and competitions held in the last couple of weeks around the country. In Cork, anglers suffered 23°C most days during the Fermoy Festival, and a late 22.5kg smash and grab saw Gary Doyle take the Inniscarra O’Callaghan’s Cup by a country mile. The sun tan lotion was also a must at Oaklands, as 209kg for the O’Neill and Pirchio team took the Commercial Pairs title there. Qualifier two of Ireland’s FeederKing took place on the Blackwater near Dungannon, with Andy Chapman claiming top spot with 9kg of skimmers – qualifier three takes place on the Erne on Saturday, May 31st. A reminder also that the Edenderry Coarse Angling Festivals are fast approaching, so anglers who want to take part should make contact with the club.

Pleasure coarse anglers have also been enjoying the weather, as they do, and visiting anglers Tim Bradshaw (Boston) and Dave Warburton (Aberdeen) arrived in Killeshandra a few weeks back just as the rain stopped and the sun started; they enjoyed some cracking tench and bream during their two week stay in Cavan. In Longford, British guests of Melview Fishing Lodge had to work for their fish in the warm weather, with early starts and late finishing paying dividends there.

While our angling reports are dominated by pictures of fishermen and their catches, special mention this week goes to two young fisherwomen, both of whom caught PBs this week. Robyn, from Galway, showed her dad Dave how it’s done by landing her PB roach of 26cm on the River Shannon and Penny, from Meath, caught her first ever tench (also a PB by default!) while fishing with her pal James on the Royal Canal near Longwood. These two budding young fisherwomen win our Catch of the Week this week!

In predator angling, we have an overdue report on the fantastic Nations Cup, which was fished on Lough Ree on May 11th. Sixty anglers fished, with six teams of ten anglers representing Ireland, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Britain and, of course, Romania. The Polish team once again showed how they excel at lure fishing, and they claimed the gold medal.

Nations Cup teams line up

Last weekend saw the latest leg of the Perch Master Ireland league, where twenty anglers lined up on the River Shannon to compete. No monsters were landed, but nobody in their shorts and sunglasses really expected them to turn up either. Away from the competitions, Ryan Crozier and his pal Willie Graham travelled from Co. Down to join Chris Barry for a day’s fly fishing for pike in Cavan, where they had two cracking fish in 30 minutes.

On the coast, doggies made the difference for South Shore SAC’s latest competition at Ballinoulart, and James of Irish Angling Adventures had an exciting week of angling with his guests – they got a Tralee Bay ray grand slam and some lovely wrasse and pollock on the lures.

Finally, we head offshore, where light easterlies and fine sunshine make for very pleasant days for charter boats on the west coast. It was great weather and great fishing for anglers on the Clare Dragoon, as skipper Luke reported good numbers of coalfish and pollack, as well as a nice mix of other species. Pollack and coalfish have also been the main species caught further north in Galway Bay, where John Fleming reports that mackerel have been landed in good numbers too, as the settled conditions have helped keep the shoals together. In Donegal Bay, Keith Clarke aboard the Fiona Tee reported that, with such fine weather, the fish were a bonus – but a bonus that they actually managed to get!

In Cork, Cobh S.A.C fished their 2nd club Master Angler competition and the twelve competitors landed seventeen species outside the harbour around the Smiths Rock area, while, further west, David Norman of Angling Adventures West Cork has had a good start to his kayak fishing for 2025.

And now the weather…

Rain will clear from eastern parts on Friday night, mostly cloudy overnight with temperatures not falling below 12°C to 14°C, in a light southwesterly wind.

Saturday morning will be cloudy with a spell of heavier rain crossing the country from the southwest through the afternoon. Humid with highs of 14°C to 19°C. Lows of 7°C to 10°C overnight with a moderate southwesterly wind & scattered showers.

Cooler on Sunday, with sunny spells and scattered showers. Highs of 12°C to 15°C in a fresh westerly breeze. Cloud will increase overnight and may bring some rain or drizzle into the southwest towards morning. Lows of 6°C to 10°C.

The outlook for next week is unsettled.

Don’t forget to double-check the forecast before heading off, and if you’re going to sea, check the tides.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

UK Anglers made to work for their catches during the hot sunny weather.

Kevin Lyons reports on the quality coarse fishing for his guests at Melview Lodge:

Len and John were over once again for their yearly trip to Ireland to stay with host Kevin at Melview Fishing Lodge; these guys know what’s expected when the weather is not in their favour. Kevin said, these guys have been here many times and have experienced all kinds of weather conditions and just do what is required at the time. So it was late evenings prebaiting and 04:00 starts which proved to be productive for the pair, over the week they produced some great fish with Bream to 7lb and lots of Tench to 6lb 12oz. For fish safety, the guys did release most of the Tench straight away due to signs of the fish nearly ready to spawn. Well done, lads and thanks for the company. I look forward to seeing you again next year.

Len and John rewarded for their hard work and early morning starts.

Elvin who is also a yearly regular to Melview Fishing Lodge decided on a more relaxed and laid back approach to his fishing holiday, however he did manage to catch some nice Hybrids and Rudd during his stay. Kevin said, Elvin is normally into the Tench fishing, but this was proving to be a little difficult due to the hot sun and bright conditions and starting a little later than others, but still an enjoyable trip for him. Thanks again Elvin for your company and hope to see you again next year.

ALL FISH RELEASED UNHARMED.

Canal tench and perch for young anglers in Meath

Penny's first tench

Penny and James from Meath targeted tench in the Royal Canal near to Longwood one evening this week.

A stiff breeze softened as the evening went on and died altogether after 9pm, when the tench came on the feed as the light began to change. There was plenty of fizz in the swim, as the fish mopped up the pre baited corn and maggots, and Penny’s float dipped under as she managed to hook into her first ever tench. James expertly netted the fish for her.

Tench o’clock

James hooked into a couple of decent hybrids and landed his first ever perch, but just couldn’t hook into a tench as the fish were feeding warily. There were missed bites and close calls but the pair were happy with their relaxing evening on the banks of the canal by the time they wrapped up at 10.30pm. No doubts they’ll be back to capture more canal tench in the near future.

Overdue Nations Cup 2025 report!

Nations Cup teams line up

This long awaited post about @Nations Cup Ireland 2025 from the organisers:

Disclaimer! If you have heart problems, I suggest sitting down comfortably and reading carefully till the end.

On Sunday, the 11th of May, the 3rd edition of Nations Cup Ireland 2025 was held on magnificent Lough Ree. This edition we managed to get anglers from 6 different nationally, 5 teams, 2 anglers fishing from the boat.

This year, we had 60 anglers line-up from

  • Ireland 5 teams 10 anglers
  • Poland 5 teams 10 anglers
  • Latvia 5 teams 10 anglers
  • Lithuania 5 teams 10 anglers
  • Romania 5 teams 10 anglers
  • UK 5 teams 10 anglers

On Sunday morning, all Nations came to Coosan Point, bringing their fabulous boats and preparing for a extremely hard day of fishing, we all checked the forecast and whether was good for anything else than fishing for predator species Pike and Perch.

Clear sky, sunny and no wind, not ideal to fish in Ireland

Launching the boats went smooth and fast because all involved in this are 100% pros!

At 8:15, the captains of each nation were invited to attend captains meeting

  • Shane Nugent Ireland
  • Igor Kłosowski Poland
  • Rolands Jekabsons Latvia
  • Andrius Bikelis Lithuania
  • Petru Pop Romania
  • Jamie Ryan UK

Igor Kłosowski and Jamie Ryan attended the meeting because captains had some difficulties getting there, Maciej Dukacz had a trailer malfunction when was travelling to Slipway, thank God only the trailer was damaged in this accident both anglers were safe and we meet the at the end of the competition, and Steven Powell some electronics issues.

This captain meeting was only formal because all aspects of this were discussed on WhatsApp group, and everyone knew the rules. Measuring boards and team cards were handed to captain, and they gave them to their teams. Because of the fog in the morning, everyone was asked to be careful when travelling on the lake.

At 9am Start signal was given and all team’s scattered all over the lake and tried to find the hot spots from the lake look for active fish, try to catch them before the sun will make room thru fog.

Fishing was extremely hard, because of the weather conditions, wind only picked up around 3:30pm but wind had a bad direction Easterly wind… not quite a favourite.

Competition was set to finish at 5 pm, and no extra time was given to anglers to come back to Slipway, so all teams made the arrangements to be on time.

Results were checked there on the spot, each captain has checked results from a different nation, and checking was done in no time.

Results were then put in to a spreadsheet (at this point myself “Markko Pop ” I made some mistakes and forgot to add some results into spreadsheet, I even check the results twice but still didn’t realise that I forgot to save the changes on the laptop), without thinking laptop was available to be checked by rest of captains.

And we were ready to have Prize giving for this edition of Nations Cup Ireland, but before we had some slices of pizza and some chips, they were delivered there at slipway by a local Takeaway Bethlehem Pizza, despite the fact was probably not enough to fill our belly’s I have to say we all deserve that after one hard day on the lake, this was supported by Baracuda Fishing Tackle Shop.

The total number of fish caught was 122 fish Pike and Perch. The longest fish was a Pike 107cm, 7 Pike over 100cm, and a good few over 90 cm.

The moment that everyone has come, to award the best anglers

We decided that will award winning Nation’s and best top 3 teams longest fish.

  • First Best Nation 2025 edition – Poland 12 points – Gold Medals
  • Second Best Nation 2025 edition – Ireland 13 points – Silver Medals
  • Third Best Nation 2025 edition – Latvia 15 points Bronze Medals

This was a tie between Latvia and Lithuania, but Latvia had the longest fish, criteria that were decided on the rules of this event

  • Fourth – Lithuania 15 points
  • Fifth – Romania 23 points
  • Sixth – UK 25 points

On individual ranking

  1. Poland – Jarek Sekula Lukasz Znamiec – 77578 points Trophies cash prize
  2. Ireland – Daniel Nesbitt Stephen Gibbons -71064 points Trophies cash prize
  3. Poland – Krzysztof Dragowski Julian Dabioch – 64641 points Trophies cash prize
  • Longest Fish – Poland – Krzysztof Dragowski Julian Dabioch – 107 cm Pike Trophie cash prize

Well done to all 60 anglers present, congratulations to the winners,

Thank you to everyone who was involved in this edition, big Thanks to all the captains of each nation. Without them, this event wouldn’t be possible. Thank you for understanding and forgiving my silly mistakes over the years!

Perch Master Ireland 2025 – Round 3

This report from the organisers of Perch Master Ireland 2025:

3rd Round of Perch Master Ireland 2025 (league ) was held on 18th Sunday on a section of Shannon River. Westin-Fishing and Lucky John have sent us perfect lures for irish waters thanks to Arch IE from Lucky John Ireland, these lures were given to all present anglers

A hard day on the water was expected because of the weather conditions, Bright sun and no wind at all. At 3pm all anglers returned to meeting point (some happy some not so happy), results where checked and prize giving was done.

Results on the 3rd round of Perch Master Ireland 2025 are

  1. Larry Kelly 120cm (longest 5 Perch)

Moy Catchment Angling Report

Week ending 18-05-2025

Michael Murphy reports on catches from the Moy…

Water levels at Ballylahan continued to drop steadily from 0.26 m on Sunday 11th down to 0.20 m by noon on Sunday 18th May. Weather wise the past week has been largely dry across Ireland with below average rainfall amounts recorded in all stations. Over the next seven days, rainfall amounts will be low to start, before conditions turn more unsettled from Friday 23rd and are forecast to trend above average particularly in the west. Prolonged periods of strong sunshine led to a gradual increase in water temperatures over the week, ultimately resulting in the suspension of angling on all Moy Fishery beats from midnight Sunday 18th May. For more information about the reopening of the Moy Fishery, please contact the Moy Fishery office at 096 21332 or the Ridge Pool Angling Centre at 096 22669. Angling pressure continues to remain low in the Moy catchment because of the current conditions, and this is again reflected in the catch returns for this week.

Byrnes Fishery

Roy reports of two salmon caught on the prawn weighing 9 lbs and 11 lbs respectively.

Gannon’s Fishery

Pat reports of one salmon caught weighing 8.5 lbs.

The Foxford Fishery

Granville reported five salmon caught on the prawn of which two were released, with the best weighing in at 13 lbs.

A salmon weighing 9 lbs from the Frenchman’s in Foxford Fishery

Foxford Salmon Anglers

Harry reports of nine salmon and one grilse caught using all methods with early mornings and late evenings showing the best returns.

Foxford Town

Reports were received of one salmon caught weighing 10.5 lbs.

Moy Estuary

Judd Ruane on board Pegasus reports of good fishing for the week particularly on the bar at the mouth of the estuary. Judd and his group had forty-three sea trout for the week with the best weighing in just under 5 lbs. Most of these were accounted for by visiting anglers Spencer Wolfe from London, Duncan Slimann from Cork, John Lawlor from Sligo and Ian Brennan from Dublin.

Malcolm on board The Tide Runner reports of fishing with one angler on Thursday 15th showing a good return of twelve sea trout with some measuring over 40 cm and the best just under 50 cm. Most were released back to the water. Malcolm also fished on Friday with one angler in tough conditions with northerly winds and blazing sunshine but still showed a return of eight fish. All fish were caught on sand eel.
