A few salmon from Currane and the real reason anglers used to wear tweeds

Church Island, Lough Currane, Waterville, Co Kerry_Web Size

Vincent Appleby is back again this week reporting from Lough Currane…

April 23, 2025. There was no activity reported from the Currane angler’s rods and reels according to WhatsApple. The weather at Currane included gentle winds from the NNW, which varied to NW, NNW, NW, and WNW with intermittent cloud cover. The previous day’s weather recorded 13.4mm of rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 12.9°C, and 1 hour and 6 minutes of sunshine.

April 24, 2025. We are pleased to report that Currane fly angler Young Dan Dwyer from Portugal has captured all the attention today with his remarkable achievement. While fly fishing with his Gillie, Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com  Dan caught and released a commendable 10-pound Salmon on the fly. As evidenced by the accompanying video, the veracity of this impressive feat is undeniable. Additionally, it is worth noting that Dan had another catch and release in recent days. Congratulations to Dan on his exceptional performance. However, for the other anglers at Currane, the day remained uneventful.

Regarding the weather, the wind was fresh SSE and later veered South, accompanied by rain throughout the day. Yesterday’s weather included 0.2mm of rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 13.2°C, and 2 hours and 4 minutes of sunshine.

April 25, 2025. Angler Dan Dwyer from Portugal, while fly-fishing with his guide Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com  caught and released a fine salmon, as shown in the video. Other anglers at Currane did not report any catches. The weather was variable, with gentle south winds that veered to SSW and SW, accompanied by good cloud cover and brighter conditions in the afternoon. There was a reasonable flood yesterday. Yesterday’s weather included 29.2mm of rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 13.7°C, and no recorded sunshine.

April 26, 2025. There have been no recorded catches of wild Atlantic Salmon by Currane anglers. Regarding the weather today, conditions include gentle to fresh winds from the SSW and significant cloud cover. The weather report for the previous day indicates a rainfall total of 3.8mm, a maximum air temperature of 14.3°C, and a sunshine duration of 4 hours and 9 minutes.

April 27, 2025. The Currane anglers experienced a quiet day, as evidenced by the reports received through WhatsApple mobile. Today’s weather forecast indicates moderate winds from the south-southwest, accompanied by intermittent cloud cover. Yesterday’s weather data recorded 2.1mm of rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 14.4°C, and 4 hours of sunshine.

28/4/2025. Unfortunately, Currane anglers had no catches today. Reflecting on the past, we recall times when Gillie’s operated without outboard motors, sharing memories of fishing days on Lough Currane. The stage is yours Mark.

Thank you so much for this Vincent, happy memories.

Seeing Brod’s name as a Co author brings back another memory for me.

Fishing with my parents with Michael Moriarty in the 1950’s , I thought I would take a boat for myself. The Butler Arms was packed and all boatmen taken. Billy Huggard said he would see what he could do.

I was introduced to Brod who had just “come back from the building in England ” but said he knew the lake and could find a boat.

Next morning we met and set out from the bungalow shore. The boat had been pulled up for some time and was dried out. Brod was bailing away and located the leak.

In those days we fished in tweed jackets and ties. Brod looked up and asked if he could borrow my tie. I handed it over and he stuffed it in the leak!

He handed it back at the end of the day and said it would be fine. It wasn’t of course. Brod grew to be a fine ghillie and a marvellous raconteur. Happy memories.

Best wishes,
Mark Maley

Today’s weather, Wind fresh SSE followed by strong gusts and good cloud cover at times. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 0.1mm, maximum air temperature 14.4°C, amount of sunshine none.

April 29, 2025. This is an update from the Inny Farmer. Hi Vince, apologies for the delay in communication. Over the weekend, there was one salmon caught on the Commeragh River. As the saying goes, it is the early bird that catches the worm. Staying with the past weekend, we proceeded downstream to Lough Currane, where at least one salmon was reported to have been caught. Returning to current events, according to updates from Currane anglers, fishing activities were minimal with no notable catches today. The wind conditions were moderate and variable, shifting from ESE to SE and SSE, accompanied by bright sunshine. Yesterday’s meteorological data recorded a trace amount of rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 18.0°C, and a total of 4 hours and 8 minutes of sunshine.

April 30, 2025. Four boats were present on Currane Lake during this notably hot day, experiencing a variable wind that was gentle to moderate and shifted from ESE to SE, SSE, and finally S. Unfortunately, the Currane anglers did not achieve any catches for reporting purposes. The weather conditions from the previous day recorded no rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 22.5°C, and 11 hours and 6 minutes of sunshine.

IASCaire Spring League – tough going on Gulladoo

The IASCaire Feeder Fishing Club held round four of their Spring League on Lough Gulladoo in Leitrim last Sunday and fishing once again proved to be tough, but a few bigger fish showed up late on to help some anglers put a decent weight together!

Bream, roach, hybrids and the odd perch made up the weights, but so difficult was the fishing that twenty fish was the highest number caught on the day and only four of the eleven fishing managed to break into double figures!

Results:

  • 1st Place – Hiszpan Feeder– 4.620kg
  • 2nd Place – Dykun Pavlo – 4.040kg
  • 3rd Place – Sarunas Zenkovas– 3.370kg

The leaderboard is looking very close heading into the final match at Emma’s Shore in two weeks’ time – it’s all to play for!

Oaklands New Ross wins Munster Team of Four league

Munster Coarse Angling Council reports that conditions were difficult for the final of the Munster Team of Four league which was fished on Inniscarra at the weekend.

The combination of high water and high wind was not a welcome one but the teams that were battling it out fished on. At the end of the day it was a clear victory for Oaklands New Ross. This is their first time winning the Paki Leahy Munster Teams Trophy.

Well done to all the Clubs that supported this event in 2025 and to the organisers Munster Coarse Angling Council.

Big tides, big bass

Big tides, big bass.

That has been the pattern this last few weeks anyway for Cormac Walsh of The Lure Fishing Podcast. Spring tides over last weekend again activated some feeding fish and Cormac took a punt on a mark he hadn’t visited for quite a while – one that he knew would fish well, but only at a certain stage of tide.

Cormac had been using an ever reliable Seeker, but once the sky became overcast, he figured that a white and green Sasuke – another favourite – could be well worth a blast.

A couple of casts later and bang – he hooked into this beauty in 3ft of water. Cormac reckons that it just goes to show you should trust your instincts more often – and it’s great to see a few bigger fish around so early in the season!

Clients flying at Angling Services Ireland

Bodo Funke of Angling Services Ireland has kept his guests flying this week… well, hauling in big pike on the fly that is! He had a couple of Swiss clients finish their trip with him earlier in the week, and their tally was 122 pike, including two new PB’s.

Next up, he had UK fly angler Graham out for a few days, and he kept the run going with Graham getting his first meter+ pike.

Ireland’s FeederKing – Qualifier 1 results

The first Feederking 2025 qualifier was held on a very out of sorts Lough Gowna over the weekend. Fishing was really difficult, due to the fish going spawning early this year.

However, Nigel Houldsworth put in a brilliant performance to dominate Rockfield with a net of bream and skimmers to weigh in over 10kg and win the match overall.

Mariusz Killan won a very difficult Kevin’s shore with just under 2kg, consisting of 3 hybrids.

Again, fishing was very hard on Emma’s shore with Irmantas Sriupsa (bream weather) winning the section with just under 2kg which consisting of a bream, roach and a hybrid.

RESULTS

GOLDEN TICKET WINNERS

  • Nigel Houldsworth 10.375kg Rockfield
  • Mariusz killan 1.850kg Kevin’s shore.
  • Irmantas sriupsa 1.970kg Emma’s shore.

SECTIONS

  • A Nigel Houldsworth/Rory O’Neil
  • B Mariusz Killan/Andy Butterfield
  • C Irmantas Sriupsa/Mark Leonard

Well done to the Golden ticket winners. The next Feederking qualifier (Q2) is on the Blackwater River, Dungannon on May 18th and there are still tickets available – so contact the organisers to get your hands on one!

Pamela Stewart wins Ulster Krakens qualifier at Ballycastle

Saturday 26th April saw the Ulster Krakens head to Ballycastle Beach for leg 4 of their Master Angler Qualifier. They took to the beach in glorious sunshine and had the wind at their backs for the evening competition, fishing from 4pm to 9pm, 3 hours on the fill, then over the top and back down.

First casts resulted in a few fish being landed and also a few dropped, but there were enough counters coming in in ones and twos to keep things interesting. Unfortunately, the fine weather brought some swimmers to the beach, which didn’t help things for the unfortunate anglers pegged in the swim zone.

Fish came in fits and bursts for the rest of the evening, the most notable of which was a nice 31cm turbot for Stephen Kinning, which almost made up for dropping a double shot earlier in the match… The top angler on the night was Pamela Stewart, whose nine counters gave her 204 points for the win.

Full results on the night were:
1st Pamela Stewart 9 counters 1 under for 204 points
2nd Raymond McCann 7 counters 1 under for 160 points
3rd Neil Boon 6 counters 4 unders for 153 points
4th Ally Nichol 5 counters 2 unders for 122 points
5th Andy McCallion 4 counters 2 unders for 109 points
