All roads lead to the World Boat Angling Championships at Bundoran and Mullaghmore – 12th to 20th Sept

This September will see the 51st Federation Internationale de la Peche Sportive en Mer (FIPS-M, International Federation of Sea Angling) World Boat Angling Championships take place at Bundoran and Mullaghmore from the 12th to 20th Sept. The Irish Federation of Sea Anglers (IFSA) clubs & membership are delighted to welcome to Ireland the world’s sea angling teams. Fourteen countries are taking part, including Belgium, Croatia, England, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, San Marino, Slovenia, Spain, Wales and of course Ireland. The area is already a hive of activity as many teams have already arrived to practice, some bringing family along too to cheer on and join in on the festivities, while others choosing to holiday in the location after the event. The competition to hold this prestigious event was highly competitive, therefore the IFSA are delighted they have been chosen to host it as it is both a great honour and a great opportunity to promote the northwest and indeed Ireland and its tourism product as a whole.
This international event takes place on the spectacular Wild Atlantic Way in particular the Donegal Bay area where all participants will be presented with not only tremendous sport fishing but spectacular scenery. The base for the competition is Bundoran in Co. Donegal, with daily departures from Mullaghmore harbour in Co. Sligo. There are likely to be some larger fish such as Rays, Huss and Tope (sharks) on offer with the majority of the catch being made up of Pollack, Wrasse and Ling. The event is proving to be a huge boost to the local economy. It is estimated that the competition will result in 1000 bed nights for the area, while many local businesses ranging from restaurants to bait suppliers are also benefitting. The local charter boat fleet is providing the many boats required for the competition and for media. This is a good news story for the area and the local people who we have worked closely with all along are eager to show what great amenities are on offer in this part of the country. Inland Fisheries Ireland are the main sponsors of the event.

World boat Championship 2015 posterTom Lilis Chair IFSA explains “We in the I.F.S.A. are grateful to Federation Internationale de la Peche Sportive en Mer for the trust they have placed in us by allowing us, on their behalf, to host the 51st. World Championships of Boat Angling. We have called on many people and organisations, locally and nationally to assist us in creating an event which will be memorable for all the right reasons. Two local clubs, Mullaghmore SAC in County Sligo and Bundoran SAC in County Donegal are jointly working on the hosting of the event together with the National Organising Committee and they have assured us that all the local politicians, County Councillors and staff together with Tourism Agencies, businesses and the entire local communities are excited by the opportunity to showcase the unique treasures of the North West.” The IFSA aims are to develop, foster and control the sport of Sea Angling in Ireland. To act and speak on behalf of Sea Angling in Ireland and where such interests are involved, with similar organisations in other countries. To make rules governing the sport of Sea Angling, particularly in festivals and competitions of all kinds. The IFSA consists of four Provincial Councils: Ulster, Leinster, Munster and Connaught. Governed by a Central Council made up of elected National Officers and Officers from each Province. Subject to AGM
Focussing on the Irish team, each angler qualified through the ranks of their Club, this brought them to the National Master Boat Angler competition. On achieving a top 12 place in the Master Boat Angler this entitled them to fish the Team Qualifiers and as such make the Team by gaining a top 6 place. Anglers work hard for many years to achieve this high level and a strong Team has emerged by way of this arduous and effective process. The Team led by captain Tony Santry and Manager Kit Dunne have planned, researched and practiced hard since November 2014, with numerous meetings and practice weekends, complimented by their own respective fine tuning, a lot of work has been put in by every angler. The Team : Tony Santry (Captain), Heiko Dreier, John Dennehey, Josie Barrett, Dan Lynch, Anthony Austin, Dave Roe, Kit Dunne (Manager).
Eva Dearie, Fáilte Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way Programme Manager said “We are delighted to be supporting the World Boat Angling Championships here in Sligo and Donegal on the Wild Atlantic Way. With over 1,000 bed nights generated from this event, Donegal and Sligo will benefit from this high profile event which is a major item on the World Sport fishing calendar where participants can look forward to Ireland’s exceptional fishing, spectacular scenery, friendly welcome and high-quality food, accommodation and entertainment. The event will begin with an opening ceremony in Bundoran which will see the flags of each nation hoisted for the duration. From Sunday, the competition begins in earnest with anglers setting off from Mullaghmore each day in order to bring the title home to their country. We wish all our visitors here to compete in these Championships a Ceád Míle Fáilte and hope they return to our shores in the future.”

On Sunday the 13th the opening ceremony commences with the teams flag parade through Bundoran, with attendance of local dignitaries and government ministers, the coast guard, defence forces and the RNLI. On Friday the 18th we have the medal presentation, gala dinner and closing ceremony. Shane Smyth, Bundoran Tourism Officer at Discover Bundoran said “this is a huge event for the area and we are thrilled to be supporting it. We are blessed with the angling amenities that we have in such close proximity – sea, lake and river and we look forward to welcoming competitors from 14 nations to take part in this prestigious competition.”

World Boat Championship Bundoran 2015The EU Interreg funded MalinWaters brand support of the World Boat Angling Championships is in keeping with their commitment to nurturing the development of marine and coastal activity such as angling, in the MalinWaters regions. MalinWaters wish all those taking part the very best of luck and we look forward to many more angling events. The World Boat Angling Championships are already a significant addition to the MalinWaters maritime calendar of events for 2015. Representing MalinWaters, Joy Harron, Marine Marketing & Development Officer for Donegal Tourism Ltd said “the World Boat Angling Championships encapsulate all that is great about our shared MalinWaters regions of Donegal and Sligo in terms of the excellent world class angling opportunities and the wealth of local maritime culture, MalinWaters are delighted to support the event and we look forward to welcoming teams from around the world to the Wild Atlantic Way”.

Our organisers, partners and sponsors will soon extend a céad míle fáilte when our local clubs Mullaghmore SAC and Bundoran SAC and the local charter boat fleets will present to the world the treasures of the North West of Ireland in what we hope will be a truly memorable championships.

Gary cap the ‘Summer’ with a fishing trip in Connemara before return to college

A fine Connemara pollack

Gary Robinson of Kayak Fisherman Ireland sums up the Summer and takes to the wilds.  Read ahead and see how he got on:

With just a few days left before returning to college the wind decided to finally die for a couple of days which gave a rare opportunity to launch on glassy seas.

 One for Rory
One for Rory

With the weather forecast not being dependable enough to risk a run home for a go at the tope we decided to fish in Connemara instead. Simple fishing, using lures. We launched from a small harbour and paddled out over deeper water where we started to hit fish from the off. Pollock, ballan wrasse, mackerel and scad all fell to our hooks easily enough with Rory taking the best fish of the session with a fine pollock.

Fiiish Minnows did the business on the first day and it really was a pleasure to be out on such calm water, a huge departure from what we have been experiencing since the end of Spring this year. Let’s hope El Nino stays away for a while after this summer. A very pleasant evening was had with a range of fish and sizes being taken from nice single fish to tiddlers. The video below shows a tiddler being returned.

We called it a day and returned to shore as the light started to fade.

Connemara dolmen
Connemara dolmen

For the second session I headed out further west into Connemara. The weather was still exactly the same as I dragged the kayak across the beach to the launch point. The sea looked inviting and the dolmen, an ancient burial site, that overlooks the bay creates an air of mystery and intrigue about the area. Parts of Connemara are most definitely well off the beaten track and it is these type of areas that I particularly like fishing. There is a silence, solitude and tranquility to them that you just cannot find on the more popular spots. I like unspoilt areas and if fishing them requires a bit more work in terms of driving further and dragging the kayak over rough terrain the so be it.

Dragging the karak to the launch point
Dragging the karak to the launch point

Launching onto the perfectly still sea was followed by a paddle towards a particular mark where I started casting and fishing lures, ever so slowly. Once again, soft plastic lures were the weapon of choice and for the afternoon I switched between Fiiish Minnows and Koneels from Sakura. I knew it was going to be a fun session from the start when the first five casts resulted in fish. I like promising starts!

Happy enough with my start, I fished on and managed quite a few fish indeed but the jewel in the crown was a fantastic pollock that took the lure in very gently but once it realised it was hooked its demeanor very much changed. It dived for the weed, it made it to the weed and only a stubborn tug of war freed it. Beaten and finally on the surface, I was looking at my biggest pollock of the year. Not a bad way to cap the ‘summer’.

I fished on and caught more fish but none were to the size of the ‘big one’. Temperatures are starting to creep back, daylight hours are lessening; it’ll soon be pike time!

Kayak angling in Ireland

Gary discovered the thrill, freedom and pure joy of kayak fishing almost by accident. After purchasing kayaks with the intention of paddling trips with his long-suffering partner, he started to assess the suitability of such a craft as a fishing platform. Some internet searches showed him that he was not alone in his thoughts. America and Australia already had blossoming populations of kayak anglers. Needing no more encouragement, he set about rigging his first sit on top kayak and transforming it into a fishing platform to gain access to some of the more inaccessible waters. Now into his fifth year of kayak fishing he shows no sign of slowing down.

Lugan B win 1st Annual Davy Gordon Memorial Cup

Davy was the Chairman of Fishing Talk Ireland AC and well respected within angling circles. He died last year and shortly before he died, he presented FTI AC this cup to run the competition. I was there and it was heartbreaking. A person giving his own memorial cup for a competition in his memory.

11935577_1490452334582421_4556250121073047469_o

The match was a four person team event run on Black, White, Yellow and Concra sections. But with a twist.

Enda Hickey takes the credit for match concept and organising the event.

Each section had only one style of fishing allowed. Pole and whip, feeder or Waggler and White Island was the joker in the pack, you could choose one style to fish but had to stay with it for the entire match.

11953310_1490452254582429_1642338899280046772_o

There was 23 teams involved and we were delighted with the turnout in memory of  our friend. A fantastic turnout for a team’s match especially a one day match.

The fishing was tough in places and competition was fierce.

Lugan B were the Winners by 1 point and only 4 points separated the top 5.

The response from the anglers was very positive and they enjoyed the twist in the rules. Most pledging to fish again next year for the wonderful trophy.

72 Pike Including Two Fish in One Cast for Fishmaniak Fishing Club Members

Pawel Orlow from the Fishmaniak club reports from their last pike boat competition which was held on Sunday 23rd August 2015 on River Shannon around Banagher. There was a great turn out with 18 enthusiastic contestants taking part in the event at this venue.

The competition was very successful and the weather was brilliant for pike fishing; a mix of clouds and sun with some showers of course. The competition started at 9am, following a meeting and short briefing. As usual each team got a club measuring tape and instructions. Competitors used spinning and trolling fishing methods on the day.

The lads had a great event and managed to land a total combined catch of 72  pike all together. The biggest pike was caught by Karol Zjawinski – a pike measuring 87cm, the biggest perch was caught by Pawel Orlow –  a cracking fish measuring 35cm.

Irish Angling Update – 10/09/15

Bunerky Lough
A dramatic backdrop for the anglers fishing the World Pairs on Bunerky Lake

The settled weather of the weekend lasted for most of this week and anglers in most parts enjoyed the opportunity to get out and fish in pleasant conditions. Of course the light winds made for tough fishing at venues where anglers like a bit of wind to ruffle the water’s surface but for others it meant the chance to do something out of the ordinary…

Irish tuna on fly
Sidney Kennedy wins Catch of the Week for his albacore tuna on fly

On the River Boyne levels have fallen following rains from the previous weeks and some good salmon fishing is possible in the lower reaches and indeed further upriver. Fishing has not been easy on the Munster Blackwater recently but a few fish have been reported at Fort William and on the Blackwater Lodge beats. The rain forecast for tomorrow has lifted spirits as anglers expect the extra water to bring up more fresh fish. The rain will also be welcomed by anglers on the Lee, Bandon and other West Cork and Kerry rivers where levels are low. Lough Currane saw a score or more sea trout to 5lb landed since our last update and again millpond conditions made for tough angling on a number of days. There was a small improvement reported by anglers on the Laune and the much talked of rain will hopefully bring further improvements. Though a few salmon were caught on the Erriff, fishing was slow and hopes are pinned on the coming rains. Fishing has been tough on Delphi too but September should see things pick up as it does most years. The Moy saw a small improvement as water levels dropped last week, but few anglers are fishing. The message from one German visitor who had 3 grilse in one day was to get out on the water. Although few anglers are on the Drowes, and it seems to be quiet a party of French anglers had 26 salmon last week and thoroughly enjoyed their time on the river. The same could not be said for anglers on the Owenea who fished in hope rather than expectation in very low water levels.

On Lough Corrib, late hatches of olives and sedges have been providing anglers with good sport over the last week. Although many are fishing wets some great bags were had on dry fly with fish to over 4lb landed. Anglers fishing a competition on Ennel on Sunday found it difficult and just a handful of fish were returned. Better fishing was had by those competing in Lough Owel’s recent competitions. Stocked lake fisheries are also reporting good fishing. Some fine rainbows were taken on a variety of flies by anglers at Lough Lene, Ardaire Springs, Carrigavantry and Cashel Trout Fishery.

On Sunday 61 anglers entered the IFPAC qualifier which was fished near Shannonbridge. Fishing was pretty patchy apart from one section which fished really well and between them they caught 260 pike to 15lb 09oz. Anglers on Corrib were enjoying more than the trout fishing last week and one lucky pair had a few good pike including a couple of fish of 14lb and 22lb. Some of the East Clare lakes are returning modest catches at moment but hopefully things will improve for Lough Graney Angling Club’s next competition on 18 October. A German angler piking in the Foxford area had some great fishing including pike to over 1m on the troll and numerous double figure fish on fly.

The World Pairs got off to a flying start this week and already we have had some great weights by individual anglers to over 18kg. Cathal Hughes and Philip Jackson were on top of the leader board for the first two days but the end of yesterday’s fishing saw big changes. They have fallen back to fifth place and Lee Addy and Paul Keeley are now in pole position – though there are only a couple of kilos between first and fourth place. Cavan is seeing a lot of angling activity at the moment with a number of festivals taking place. The Gowna Festival was fished last week and was won with 53.880kg. The Arva Festival is taking place this week and there are daily catches of 14-18kg. Pleasure anglers in the Belturbet area are also reporting good fishing. It’s a busy time on Inniscarra in Co. Cork which currently in the middle of festival mania. Alastair Ogilvy won the Vinters Cup with 42.200kg. Charlie Greaves won the Lennox cup which finished on Wednesday and Jimmy Crossley is currently leading the Coolcower Cup. Weights have still not recovered to expected levels but the change in conditions may yet see an improvement.

Off the east coast, charter boat anglers are getting up to 10 species a day including tope to almost 50lb and smoothhounds to nearly 20lb. Settled weather on Sunday and early this week saw enterprising boat owner Mike Dennehy take off from Kinsale in pursuit of Albacore tuna. As many as 20 were caught on a day including two on fly for Catch of the Week winner Sidney Kennedy. Bass anglers fishing from Clonakilty had good sport even on the poor days getting fish to 72cm. A few bass were also reported from Courtmacsherry and other anglers charter boat fishing in West Cork have been treated to good catches of blue shark, ling, cod and more. Similar fishing was reported off the Clare coast with the addition of megrim, haddock and porbeagle.

A Small Craft Warning was issued at noon today and southeast to east winds will reach force 6 at times today and tonight on all coasts of Ireland. A Status Orange Rainfall Warning is also in place for tonight and tomorrow in Connacht, Donegal, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Tipperary. A Status Yellow Rainfall Warning is in place tomorrow for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan and Waterford.

In general weather over the weekend will be mixed with a wet start to Saturday, though dry conditions are expected over the southern half of the country in moderate westerly breezes. It will be much the same across Sunday and Monday.  Hopefully conditions will settle again for sea anglers but the change should see an improvement at most river and lake fisheries.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Stephens' Persistence Pays Off on the Boyne

Stephen McKenna Poses for A Quick Photo With His Catch Before Releasing it Carefully Back to the River

Its hard to believe that the middle of September is nearly here and that we are on the run in to the final few weeks of the 2015 season. Stephen McKenna from Drogheda was out on the River Boyne earlier in the week and had commented that he had not had a fish in a while. Not long after those words were spoken, Stephen hooked into a lovely fish that gave a great battle but was eventually landed and released immediately after a few quick photographs. The water is still a bit coloured in the Boyne despite the fact that we have not had much rain recently. There are a few fish being caught, one of which was reportedly close to 20lbs. Nice Fish!

Low water on Owenea, few fishing

Report for week ending 06 September:

The Owenea ran at low summer levels for the greater part of the week. The highest reading of the week was only 0.16m on Wednesday. The gauge average for the week was only 0.12 metres. This meant the river was fairly quiet and only 8 visiting rods fished for the week! We have no recorded catch of salmon to date.

French anglers land 26 salmon on Drowes

Report for weekending 06 September:

There were good water levels on the Drowes this week again. The gauge at the Four Masters Bridge read 0.65m at the start of the week. The river fell over the week and by Sunday the gauge read 0.56m. The river was fairly quiet which is usual given the time of the season but for those that did venture out, the fishing was good. One visiting group of 6 French rods recorded 26 salmon caught for the week! These were mostly caught on small Rapala lures with the rest caught on worm.

It was much the same story on Lough Melvin this week. There was little angling effort for salmon and not much to report in the way of salmon catches.
