Top Dry-Fly tips from Keith McDonnell

Angling guide, instructor and blogger Keith McDonnell usually has some interesting takes on fly fishing, and he recently put together this piece on dry fly fishing for the Guide Flyfishing website. As usual, Keith gives us plenty to think about, and it’s rare to come away from one of his articles without having gained a new perspective on some aspect of fly fishing.

National sea angler app shows Whiting, Dogfish, Coalfish, Seabass and Spurdog were the top 5 fish species hooked during Jan-Mar.

Anglers have been logging their trips on IFI’s free IMREC Diary since 2021, and the information collected has become an important tool in improving our understanding of fish stocks around the Irish coastline. Link to IMREC site

The start of the year saw IMREC diarists catch species more commonly linked to the winter months. Dublin, Galway and Wicklow were hotspots for sea angling during these months.

Other information submitted by shore and boat anglers between January – March showed that:

  • On average, the individual angler caught four fish per trip;
  • Catch and release rates were over 90%;
  • Over the winter, each angler caught about three different species.

Active IMREC diarists are entered into regular prize draws.  So even if the fishing was slow, your trip could still pay off—just make sure to log it in your IMREC Diary.

Congratulations to William Rock, the winner of April’s draw. Hopefully William will land even more fish in the months ahead.

Inland Fisheries Ireland is seeking more anglers to sign up to the voluntary IMREC citizen science app that records their sea angling catches

More Species Appearing in Sea Anglers Specimen Hunt

James Raymond from Irish Angling Adventures is certainly doing his part to promote sea angling participation this year. Between holding down a job, guiding and organising sea angler community meet ups he’s been a busy man. But that’s not all. James has also organised a specimen hunt for the year, in which anglers from around the country are taking part and posting their specimen fish catches of various species. And James is back with an update on how the hunt is going…

Gilthead Bream, a summer visitor to our shores

First Salmon of 2026 in Galway

It was a long winter in Galway, and water levels remained high for most of the spring period, with no angling taking place. The dry weather of the past couple of weeks has seen water levels falling upstream, and finally the river dropped to 2 gates open on the weir. Several anglers were in to try their luck on Monday, with renewed optimism given the nice conditions, and they were handsomely rewarded!

First of the Year

James Carney hooked a springer on the spinner, and he landed a lovely fresh fish of just over 10lbs – the first salmon of 2026 in Galway. Well done James!

Dave O’Reilly from Dublin was also visiting for his first session of the year. Fishing the fly, he landed a second sparkling silver fish, almost exactly the same size as James’s fish.

And not to be outdone, Peter Farrelly, who was fishing the shrimp in Jimmy’s Pool, hooked and landed a third salmon of approx. 12lbs.

Three happy anglers heading home, and the fishery is off the mark. Great to see some lovely spring salmon in the river, and hopefully this is the start of a good spring run.

Dave’s dawn raid lands bass in Clare

This report came in from bass angler David Galvin detailing some recent success in County Clare:

It was an early start in the hunt for a west coast bass, and as the sun rose above Mount Callan and bathed the shoreline in Quilty in West Clare in its light, this beautiful 63 cm bass took a Savage Gear Gravity Stick with sand eel colouring. These types of paddle-tail lures can be super effective when other lures fail, and after an impressive battle and a quick photo, this fine bass was returned to fight another day…
