Good water at Kylemore but salmon run sporadic so far

Nigel Rush reports that there were a few salmon caught at the Kylemore Abbey Fishery during the week…

UPDATE – 21 July: Things are starting to improve. Mr. Fitzjohn landed three today through the Upper and Middle River, lost three and turned as many again. Seems to be a more consistent run of fish at last.

19 July: We have plenty of water but the run of fish is sporadic. Some days a good belt of fish seem to be everywhere, the next, nothing doing. We have been averaging about eight fish a week for the past couple of weeks with little rod effort. To date we have 51 fish in the book against 35 for the same period last year. By no means a record, but better than nothing.

Our best week on average over the last 10 years is Week 33 which this year is 2nd-8th August. The week after the draft netting has ended.

We had a textbook day today with conditions just 100% perfect but only one fish landed from good anglers.  Where as yesterday was “poor”, awful conditions; conditions that would drive the best of anglers daft and yet one angler, Seamus O’Neil, had four fish for a morning. Three of theses fish were a mere 2lb or even less so hopefully these are the pipers that hearald the start of the serious Grilse run.

Hidden away between the mountains of Connemara and the Atlantic ocean, the Kylemore Abbey fishery is a wild and beautiful place. Kylemore Abbey Fishery consists of the Kylemore Middle and Castle lakes, with five and a half miles of the Dawros river which enters the sea in Ballynakill bay.  Salmon and sea-trout run for a good proportion of the year to provide first class fishing on uncrowded waters.

The open panoramas of the lakes contrast with the intimacy of the river to give a variety of fishing combined with stunning scenery unrivalled anywhere in Ireland. Although offering an excellent chance of a fish for most of the season, you will find the real meaning of “a fish is a bonus” at Kylemore.

Salmon to 14lb caught amongst the grilse on Owenea

19 July: Water levels were very good at the start of the week with the gauge reading 0.28 metres at its highest on Monday. The river then fell over the next 3 days but then we received a good flood on Friday evening and lovely water levels on Saturday (0.28m) and Sunday (0.50m). The gauge average for the week was good reading 0.29 metres. The fishery was busy with 63 visiting rods fishing for the week. There were decent numbers of salmon caught during the good water periods.

On Monday, Davy Arbuckle accounted for a 6½lb grilse caught on a spinner from beat 8. Michael McCrory reported a 4½lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 8 and Adrian Whelan accounted for an 8lb salmon caught on a spinner from beat 8.

On Tuesday, Michael McCrory logged a 2½lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 7.

On Saturday Hugh Mooney recorded 2 salmon weighing 9 & 9½lb caught on a spinner from beat 5. John Northridge reported 2 grilse weighing 4 & 6lb caught on a fly from beat 4. Frankie Byrne logged a 5½lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 5 and Damien Doherty registered a 10½lb salmon caught on a fly from Beat 5.

On Sunday, Adrian Whelan reported a 14lb salmon caught on a spinner from beat 8 and Jim McLean accounted for 2 grilse weighing 5½ & 6½lb caught on a spinner from beat 8.

The forecast for the coming week is for showery weather and I would expect some good water levels in the river. Prospects look good for the coming 7 days

Good numbers of grilse in Lough Melvin

19 July: The salmon fishing was quieter this week on Lough Melvin. At this stage the lough has very good numbers of grilse present but as per normal, we see a marked drop off in salmon angling effort with many rods having caught their quota of salmon. The salmon get a bit of peace!

Not many fishing Drowes, 20 caught salmon last week

19 July: The Drowes maintained a steady level over the week of around 0.45 metres. A little on the low side but we received good rain at the weekend and levels are starting to rise again. The river was not particularly busy but those rods that fished did fairly well and there were some 20 salmon caught for the week.

On Tuesday, Michael McLaughlin recorded a 6lb grilse on a fly from the Island Pool and Stanley Kingham accounted for a 4lb grilse caught on prawn from the Sea Pools. On Thursday, Billy Grimes reported a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from the Sea Pools. Over Friday and Saturday, Patrick O’Malley reported 5 grilse caught and released. These weighed from 1½ to 3lb and were caught on flies and shrimp from the Mill Pool and the Black Hole. On Sunday, P.J. Bailey recorded a 4½lb grilse caught on worm from the Black Hole.

The water is starting to rise again and this bodes well for angling for the coming week.

Ideal conditions at Delphi and fishing "excellent"

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

David McEvoy from the Delphi Fishery reports that the fishing has been excellent since his last update, with 36 fish landed and probably twice as many met and lost…
Conditions have been ideal for salmon fishing here with near perfect water conditions and plenty of fish entering the system.
Saturday the 11th saw seven fish being landed. The river started at 50 and all but one of the fish were landed before lunch. We had heavy rain during the morning and afternoon with the river peaking at 90 later on. Michael Wymes was first off the mark with a cracking fish from the Horseshoe of 9lbs8ozs on a Willie Gunn. Ash Mathews had two, one from the Rock pool of 6lbs1oz on a Frances and one from the Whin of 5lbs7ozs on a Cascade. His fishing partner for the morning Howard Williams also had one from the Meadow of 5lbs7ozs on a Cascade. David Gilpin had one from the Deadmans of 5lbs3ozs also on a Cascade.
Mike Shortt had a fish of 4lbs15ozs off Fin on a Collie Dog. The river was practically unfishable in the afternoon and rising rapidly and it wasn’t until 10pm that Ken McMillan managed to land the seventh of the day from the Turn pool of approx. 3lbs on a Cascade.

Helen Westropp

The 12th saw eight fish landed. George and Helen Westropp had two fish each. George had a lovely fish of 9lbs7ozs from the Holly pool on a Cascade, while Helen landed one on a Cascade of 4lbs11ozs from the Deadmans. In the afternoon George had one off Fin on a Red Frances of 4lbs, while Helen also had one off Fin of 3lbs5ozs on a Cascade. Alan Boyd had a stale springer off Fin of 7lbs10ozs on an Ally Shrimp and then proceeded to play a good double figure fish for half an hour before finally parting company.
David Gilpin also had two fish off the river, one from the Grilse pool of 3lbs5ozs and one from the Waterfall of 4lbs14ozs, both on a Gary Dog. Mike Shortt had a fish off the Turn pool of 4lbs6ozs on a Delphi Collie.
There were four landed on the 13th. Kurt Roth landed three of these. The first was from the Turn pool of 5lbs5ozs on a Black and Green, the second from the Fallen Tree on Fin on a cone head Frances of 3lbs9ozs and the third in the Stream of approximately 4lbs on a Green Peter. Ken McMillan also had a fish from the Meadow pool of approximately 3lbs on a Collie Dog.
The 14th we only had the one, but the day belonged totally to 11 year old Michelle Roth, Kurt’s daughter and Nick’s granddaughter. It was Michelle’s first salmon on the fly and it weighed in at 7lbs2ozs and was taken in the Road pool on a Frances. Well done Michelle from all here at Delphi.
There were three fish on the 15th. Helen Westropp had one from the Meadow pool of 3lbs14ozs on a Cascade. William Morrison also had one on a Cascade from the Rock pool of 4lbs4ozs and Mike Shortt had a cracking grilse of approx. 7.5lbs from the Deadmans also on a Cascade.
There were five on the 16th with Ken McMillan and Alan Boyd landing four off the river and meeting another ten. Ken had two, one from the Quarry pool of 2lbs12ozs and one from the Kings of 5lbs11ozs, both on Cascades. Alan had one from the Deadmans of 3lbs7ozs and one from Heneghans of approx. 5.5lbs, both also on a Cascade. Kurt Roth had the fifth of the day from the Steam on Fin of 3lbs5ozs on a Willie Gunn.
Four were landed on the 17th, with Patrick Carroll being first off the mark with a fish of 4lbs10ozs from the Quarry pool on a gold headed Red shrimp. Alan Boyd had two, one of 4lbs7ozs from the New Island and one of 3lbs4ozs from Morrisons, both on Cascades. Ken McMillan also had a fish of 3lbs8ozs from Deadmans on a Cascade.
Finally there were four yesterday. Michael Griffin had a lovely grilse of 6lbs2ozs from the Whin pool on a Willie Gunn. Ciaran Boland had one of approx. 4lbs also in the Whin on a Frances. 16 year old Seamus McEvoy managed to land his first ever on the fly from the Turn pool, unaided it must be said. The fish was taken on a Willie Gunn tube on a full sinking line and weighed in at 4lbs6ozs. Not to be outdone by my own son I managed to land my first Delphi fish of the year, weighing in at 4lbs11ozs from the Quarry on a Willie Gunn.
Water levels are still near perfect and there are fresh fish still running so I would expect the good fishing to hopefully continue.

In Ireland, a haven of fly-fishing, golf and solitude – Columbia Daily Tribune

Some years back, a fishing guide acquaintance of mine led pro golfers Tiger Woods and Mark O’Meara out on Oregon’s Deschutes River for a day of fly-fishing for steelhead. As my friend recounted this special day, it struck me that many golfers I know fly-fish — and vice versa. Perhaps it’s the outdoor setting, pitting man against obstacles (be they finicky trout or gaping bunkers). Perhaps it’s the similitude of the swinging/casting motion, and the fact that the ball and the fly go farther when you move smoothly.

Crucial tagging studies to protect salmon and trout – Belfast Telegraph

The Biosciences Institute (AFBI), in conjunction with DCAL Inland Fisheries and Agri-Food are conducting tagging studies in various DCAL waters. These studies are important and will provide valuable information to protect our salmon and trout stocks.

If you catch a tagged fish, it does not need to be killed, simply take a note of the tag number and report this along with your contact details if you wish to be entered into the prize draw.

Prizes include a complimentary 2016 DCAL Season Licence and Permit, a day’s fishing on a Lower Bann beat, compliments of the Irish Society and various items of fishing tackle.

Returns must include the tag number, date and recapture location. This input from anglers is vital and length and weight measurements are also useful but optional.

Please be aware any information received will be shared with DCAL and AFBI….

Up to 150 fish dead in ‘badly designed’ Kilminchy lake – Leinster Express

An estimated 150 fish died from lack of oxygen last week in Kilminchy lake, which was ‘never designed’ for fish, according to Inland Fisheries.

Fish began dying in the largest of the housing estate’s three lakes on Monday morning July 6.

Chairman of Kilminchy Management Company John Cowhig lives beside the lake.

“It was a shock to see them on Monday morning. Fish were all swimming to the surface, I presume to get oxygen as they were dying. I have been here 12 years and have never seen fish dying,” he said.

The three ‘attenuation’ lakes were built in the 750 housing estate, to collect drainage water, with fish added later by residents.

An Inland Fisheries expert visited the lakeside, and says if consulted, it would have advised against adding fish….
