Frank Maunsell from the Owenmore Fishery reports that they had an early run of sea trout last week but the water level was too high over the weekend…
12 April: We have a good flood in the river at the moment. It will be Monday before it is fishable. We have had a run of Seatrout over the last two weeks but the real run of Seatrout normally starts in the last two weeks of April. Some of the fish in this run can be heavier than what you would get later on in the Season.
Last Years early run was one of the best we have had in the past twenty years so lets hope this continues for 2015.
There are approximately five miles of fly fishing along the main part of the Owenmore River in Kerry, with 33 named pools and an additional 180 acres of lake fishing in this Kerry beauty spot. The salmon, grilse and sea trout begin to run in April. The runs continue through spring and summer into early October.
‘OUTLAW mentality’. That’s how a member of Bandon Angling Association describes those who continue to dump rubbish at a popular natural amenity site just outside Bandon. What is ironic is that this area is just down the road from Bandon Civic Amenity Site (CAS) at Knockavede that serves the surrounding area, and yet rubbish lies in the ditches of both sides of the road… The Southern Star, 11/04/15. A memorandum of understanding sealing a commitment to continue co-operation in research and education was agreed recently between Inland Fisheries Ireland(IFI) and Queen’s University Belfast (QUB). Scientists from QUB and IFI have worked together over a number of years to produce high quality research covering a range of projects, species and topics. Current areas include fish population genetics, aquatic invasive species and fish telemetry… Irish Times, 13/04/15. From the Slaney River Trust, we hear that the fishing has been slow but that there are a few fish in, and well spread out through the system…
11 April: Fishing over the past couple of weeks has generally been slow with a trickle of fish running the river. Water levels have been good during the period but many anglers have put in quite a few days with not so much as a pull. Others have been lucky including the first fish from the Kilbride beat and another a few days later.
The first salmon from Kilbride this seasonWas a followed a couple of days later by this one…
Fishing at Enniscorthy has been quiet but anglers have had a few, this one being the first of the season.
Enniscorthy’s first salmon of the season
Fish have been reported from many beats including Riversdale, Ballycarney, Clobemon, Tombrick, Strahart, The Wood and Clohamon, so the few that are about, seem to be well spread out. What many beats require now is a good flood as water levels are getting quite low.
What is encouraging is that anglers are reporting seeing quite a few fish, but this is probably a result of the catch and release policy, which is clearly essential given the lack of a proper run of springers.
Anglers are reminded to please join the Slaney Rod Fishers Association, your support is essential in order to keep the organisation going. This can be paid online, by post or by paying at the AGM on the 24th April at 7.30 pm in the Millrace Hotel, Bunclody.
Inland Fisheries Ireland confirmed that Bass Fishing Conservation S.I. No. 826 OF 2007 remains in force and imposes a bag limit of two bass in any one period of 24 hours. The Irish bye-law also places a ban on angling for bass during the spawning season, which runs from 15th May to the 15th June.
On 29th March 2015, the European Commission introduced a daily bag limit which allows for ‘not more than three’ bass to be retained by anglers.
This limit complements and supports Ireland’s conservation measures, and those implemented by other countries, to assist in the recovery of bass stocks across Europe.
The limit is operational in the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) divisions: IVb, IVc, VIIa, VIId, VIIe, VIIf, VIIg, VIIh, VIIj and VIIk, and highlighted in the map below.
Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) has a confidential hotline number to enable members of the general public to report incidents – 0818 34 74 24 or 0818 FISH 24. This phone line is designed to encourage the reporting of incidents of illegal fishing, water pollution and invasive species.
COUNCIL REGULATION (EU) 2015/523 of 25 March 2015 amending Regulations (EU) No 43/2014 and (EU) 2015/104 as regards certain fishing opportunities: In June 2014, the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) released scientific advice on the stock on sea bass in the north-east Atlantic, and confirmed that this stock has been in rapid decline since 2012. Furthermore, the Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF) has evaluated the protection of sea bass by national measures in place and, in general, has deemed those measures ineffective.
The Commission has adopted Implementing Regulation (EU) 2015/111 (2), based on Article 12 of Regulation (EU) No 1380/2013 of the European Parliament and of the Council (3), (i.e. Article 12 – Commission measures in case of a serious threat to marine biological resources) to alleviate a serious threat to the conservation of the sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) stock in the Celtic Sea, Channel, Irish Sea and southern North Sea. Also recreational fisheries contribute significantly to the fishing mortality on that stock. It is therefore appropriate to establish fishing opportunities in the form of a daily limit on the number of fish that a recreational fisherman may retain. Recreational fisheries include various forms, such as fishing from a recreational vessel or fishing from shore.
In recreational fisheries in ICES divisions IVb, IVc, VIIa, VIId, VIIe, VIIf, VIIg, VIIh, VIIj and VIIk not more than three specimens of sea bass may be retained per person per day.
Another North Westmeath Lake is also making the headlines in the Angling World. Recently Mullingar angler Johnny Keegan had a super days fishing with pal Stephen Duffy. The deadly duo were lure fishing, and Johnny hooked up with a lovely rainbow from the Whitelake.
The Whitelake hold some very big rainbows, and the fishing is controlled by Whitelake Angling Club. Find out more about White Lake.

Michael Flanagan teamed up with Lough Bane Anglers last Sunday for their first trout competition of the 2015 season…
It was a nasty old day, with blustery winds, and few good hail and rain showers. I found it hard to entice a Bane trout to take my fly, and ended up with a great blank for my first day on Bane. On the day some lovely fish were presented at the 6pm weigh-in.

The Multy lads Paddy Ward, and Tom Newman had 3 lovely trout, but just missed out on the prizes.

Last Sunday Lough Derravaragh Anglers hosted their first trout fly-fishing competition of 2015, the Abbott & Tight Lines Cup for brown trout…
It was a tough day on Derravaragh with very calm conditions, and the odd burst of sunshine from time to time. What harm great to get it after such bad weather in recent weeks. There was plenty of fly life, and a nice trickle of fish were feeding on the surface. Michael Flanagan flanked by Liam Gilsenan and Joe Keena
I had a bit of luck and actually caught two Derravaragh trout, one good enough to take Top Rod. Liam Gilsenan was 2nd, and Joe Keena finished 3rd. Unfortunally the Abbott Tight lines Cup was not returned, but Christy Hynes took a presentation pic of all the winners. I will pick up the Cup in the coming week.
Derravaragh is open for membership @ 25 Euro for Adults. Michael Flanagan Midland Angling

Italian anglers Stefano Anderlini, Tiziano Nicoetti, and Alfredo Stracciari enjoyed their fishing
Some Italian pike anglers enjoyed their time in the Midlands, write Micahel Flanagan…
On the pike scene Italian anglers Stefano Anderlini, Tiziano Nicoetti, and Alfredo Stracciari checked out what the pike fishing is like here in the Midlands. The lads were staying in Athlone and had some nice pike working a variety of lures, on the River Suck and Lough Derravaragh.

I hope to keep in touch with the lads on social media and get them back here to Mullingar, as they will be checking my daily reports on www.facebook.com/midlandangling.
