Hopes for much better salmon year on Boyne, Drogheda Independent

The decision about the Boyne came after a very poor season last year when just a handful of salmon were hauled ashore. The Boyne Draft Fishermen have been taking part in the catch and release system for some years in an effort to assist with judging how healthy stocks of salmon are on the river. 2014 was one of the worst years for recorded fish yet, just 13 fish taken in nine days. Two years ago they landed 120 in a day…

Another Life: Small is beautiful – Ireland’s lakes, ponds and pools, Irish Times

My favourite lake lies at the end of the machair, the grassy plain behind the dunes. I’m not sure I can even call it a lake, at least officially, as the EU’s water framework directive says a lake has to span at least 50 hectares, and I doubt if this one makes even an old-fashioned acre. But it has long been Dooaghtry Lough on the maps, and that’s good enough…

Irish Water fined €500 for pollution, Irish Examiner

Irish Water has been fined €500 and ordered to pay €5,300 in costs after being convicted of causing pollution to a river in Co Monaghan. The company was prosecuted by Inland Fisheries Ireland for allowing aluminium sulphate, described as a highly toxic substance, into the stream near the village of Threemilehouse, a few miles from Monaghan Town, causing discolouration of the water and the death of fish stock…

Nature and man vs our bass stock, join the Bass tagging programme

Guide Sean Jordan of Bass fishing Wexford ponders on our bass stocks and how the weather influences them.  Read on;

Of course, you can make all the plans you want about new tactics, marks, etc, etc, but if we keep getting the weather of the last few seasons options will again be limited. It seems like the constant winds from all directions have never abated for long enough for any settled weather patterns to form, especially any High air pressure fronts conducive to good fishing prospects. Plans that have often turned into more of a chasing game, than a waiting game.         Those in the know tell us its down global warming.      Briefly, by way of :   Warmer oceans = More moisture in the atmosphere = More, + Stronger, Winds, Storms.

Sean Jordan - Plans for 2015It certainly makes lure fishing tough, churning up murk, + weed, in an already tough fishing environment that demands a big effort for consistent results. It’s well documented that just turning up at some old generic mark, and throwing the latest lure won’t do it any more, and there are many opinions on that.   Bass stocks go up, + down for sure, through natures many deciding, + complex factors during those first 18 months after being spawned, determining the different year classes, coupled with that “cancer on the planet”, Man, and his never ending quest for exploiting fish stocks in an unsustainable manner where ever they can get away with it, it’s a one-way street, with no way back, + no more bass…

Sean Jordan - Plans for 2015 2One ongoing plan is the continuation of tagging, and taking data for the IFI’s National Bass Programme, the Bass need our help, always do what you can for their future, C+R, + never miss a chance to voice your concerns about ALL fish stocks…….

Plans, plans, plans, if we do get a decent season there are plenty of plans afoot, new, and some old which are not quite the finished article yet, as always in fishing “success is never final”, adapting, evolving, it’s a never ending “Work in progress”……

Port plans 'take no account of climate change concerns' – Irish Independent

Ambitious expansion plans for Galway Port take “no regard” of climate change, An Taisce has claimed.
Ian Lumley for An Taisce insisted the focus should be on the rising flood and storm risk to Galway city, describing it as the “over-riding concern” for the city in the future.
“This entire process carried out by Galway Port company, a State body, represents complete mis-expenditure and inappropriate use of public money and resources,” he said.
He said the city would be facing rising sea levels and storm conditions and increased rain-fall levels, with Ireland facing a future of increased storm conditions that it will see more regular orange and yellow weather warnings….

Irish Angling Update, 15/01/15

A snowy dawn
A snowy dawn

The last week has seen a real mix of weather – bright, sunny winter’s days, heavy snow and blizzard conditions, teeming rain and storm force winds followed one after the other, so it is not surprising that there are only a few reports in this week’s Irish Angling Update.

Two weeks in to the new salmon season and the first salmon of 2015 is still proving elusive. Another fish was lost on spinner from the River Drowes’ Mill Pool on Friday. The Laune, Lough Currane and some other Kerry systems open on Saturday – maybe anglers there will do better?

Michael Flanagan reports that there is some good sport to be had with perch. On Ennell they are feeding in the deeps at the moment and can be hard to locate, but will take well once you are over a shoal. Ballybay Angling Association have announced that this year’s 4 man team event event will be held on Lough Muckno on 29th March 2015. Daingean Match Anglers had a good day on Sunday and the chosen section fished very evenly with everyone enjoying a few fish. Gary Robinson has been desperate to get a fish recently but high water at many venues has thwarted his efforts. Determined to succeed he decided to dropshot for perch in the small canals of Galway city. Unfortunately the water was high even here, but the day was not a write off as he scouted many likely locations to try again when the water levels drop.

Joe McDermott’s young nephew Jason wins Catch of the Week for his competition winning 10lb 8oz pike

The Lough Glore Anglers fished their first competition of the year on a very blustery Sunday last weekend. Michael Flanagan reported fishing to be tough with many dropped runs and missed hits on lures. Better fishing was reported by the Camlin Anglers. Joe McDermott and his young Nephew Jason took top spot in their first competition of the year with a pike of 10lbs 8oz. This lovely fish wins Jason Catch of the Week. Some enjoyable fishing was also reported at Lough Muckno where fish pushing double figures were taken on the troll. The fish were said to be in excellent condition and there is a lot of interest in getting back on the water once the winds die down.

Sea fishing is reported to be extremely difficult in the North East at the moment. 62 anglers from Wexford to Dundalk battled the elements in what could only be described as very tough conditions to compete for the first leg of the Leinster Shore League. The fishing was slow and the eventual winner was Ciaran O’Toole. The conditions along the east coast saw some anglers from Louth and Meath travel as far as Wexford and Waterford in search of action. Peter Cunningham and John Baker were well rewarded for their efforts with some good catches of flounder, whiting, dabs and codling at Ballyhack and Passage East. A group of Dubliners also traveled to Wexford where they fished with some local anglers and good flounder and bass were recorded in the catches.

Last week saw some great fishing at some of the put and take trout fisheries. Unbelievably at Lough Ardaire fish to 15lb were taken on dry fly. Good fishing was also reported at Laoise Angling Centre and at Rathcon. Trout anglers will also be interested to read about the Kilbride Anglers who took 2nd place in the Canon Ellison Awards for their rehabilitation works on the Kells Blackwater.

As we write today’s Irish Angling Update there is a still a Status Red weather warning in place for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo with southwest veering west winds of mean speeds in excess of 80 km/h., and gusts of 130 to 150km/h possible. Status Orange and Yellow warnings cover much of the rest of the country. Tomorrow will be cold and bright and far less windy. There will be further showers especially in the morning and some will be wintry, but will tend to become more isolated in the afternoon. Moderate or fresh west to northwest winds and afternoon temperatures of just 3 to 7 degrees C. It will be cold and largely dry over the weekend, but there will be wintry showers in some areas and early next week may see a return of sleet and snow.

Take care and fish safely!

Tight lines especially in Ireland,

Myles Kelly

Lough Glore pike hard to tempt at weekend competition

Michael Flanagan reports from the

I joined up with Lough Glore anglers last Sunday January 11th for their first club pike competition of the New Year. The blustery cold condition kept numbers down for this competition, and it proved hard to entice a Glore pike to grab our lures.

I was very unlucky not to have a few pike, as I had 3-4 runs on dead bait all dropping, and as many hits on lures. How ever I squeezed in between last season joint anglers of the year winners, and finished in 2nd place. Pat O’Brian was top rod on the day, and Pat Daly 3rd.

The club is open for membership, with Senior membership set at 20 Euro.

Glore is listed under the Midland Fisheries Group, and you will also need a Shannon River Basin District fishing permit, fixed at 40 Euro for Adult permit. I have being asked to mention that all club members must wear lifejackets pleasure fishing or competition fishing.

GLORE RIVER

The Glore River was quite high last Sunday but once you keep between the markers, there is no problem accessing the lake. Unfortunally up river illegal dumping is a problem, and not a pretty sight. This problem was also highlighted some weeks back in Angling Focus, when coming down the Inny River from Coonagun Bridge where plenty of bags of rubbish were floating along the river and stuck under weed beds and over hanging trees.

Joe McDermott's young nephew Jason wins Catch of the Week for his competition winning 10lb 8oz pike

Midlands Reporter Michael Flanagan reports from Upper Shannon…

It was a magical day out last Sunday on the River Shannon and Lough Forbes. It was the first competition of neighboring club Camlin Anglers in Longford, and many of our local anglers had a cracking day out. A total of nineteen boats ventured out in a flooded River Shannon, and some lovely pike came on line.

Top Rod was one of Irelands top preator anglers Joe McDermott and his young Nephew Jason. The deadly Duo rattled the nets with a pike of 10lbs 8oz. This fine pike wins Jason Catch of the Week. Ballymahon piker Mick Dalton fishing with another up and coming young angler Isaac Elliott finished 2nd with 10lbs 3oz, 3rd was Gerry McVeigh 9lbs 12oz, and Brendan Griffith finished 4th.
