Specimen pollack around Red Bay

Hamish Currie skipper of Predator II reports:

Inshore fishing around Red Bay is quite good at the moment with bait fish everywhere you go.  Highlight of the week was a fine specimen Pollack for John Love from the Banker’s specimen club.

Hamish Currie 1Blonde  rays and cod were also present.  The porbeagles will be all that’s on my mind in the coming weeks with a good few shark trips planned.  Give us the weather and I’m quite sure we will produce.

Mackeral so thick, you couldn't get the bait through them in Bundoran

Winner of the Bundoran open Gavin Dorrian

Sean Carty of Carty’s Land and Sea Sports in Bundoran, Co. Donegal updates us on the fishing in the north of the country:
This weekend the annual Bundoran Sea Angling club open boat competition in conjunction with the final day of the Carty’s Ulster closed gold medal boat league was held in Bundoran on Sunday .Conditions on the day were first class and there was a good turnout of 30 anglers filling 3 boats to capacity . The 3 boats on the day were the Bundoran Star , the Dunai Mara and the Prospector . Fishing was made tough by the sheer number of Mackerel in the bay being so dense that anglers were unable to get there bait through them to reach other target species .

Nice sea trout from the Erne estuary

Nice Sea Trout on the Erne estuary

On the Erne estuary this week fishing was steady with most anglers venturing out being rewarded with some good Sea trout fishing . There are plenty of Trout in the system along with a serious amount of feed which leaves it more challenging for the angler . There was reports this week of quite a few exceptional fish caught along the bog and randy shore areas a lot of which were around the 2 – 3lb mark

Isaac catches a fine Clonakilty bass

Isaac Bradley with a fine bass

Clonakilty bay has been turning up some good bass fishing of late. Soft plastics are catching fish as the channels are relatively weed free but the live sand eels are by far the best method. Isaac Bradley had this super fish over the weekend of eight pounds assisted by local bass guide Peter Aspinwall.

A good personal best for Damien at Carrick on Shannon

Damien Cosgrave enjoyed a little evening fishing trip one evening 2 weeks ago in the Carrick on Shannon area.  It was a nice mild evening with little or no wind. Damien landed 40+ perch in a 2 half hour period on maggot & float, with the biggest being this lad pictured below. Unfortunately he had no scales to weigh the fish. It was a very thick fish and a new personal best for him by a long shot. Well done!

Little rain and only a reasonable amount of anglers at Owenea

Lindsey Clarke reports from OWENEA FISHERYMonday 18th to Sunday 24th August 2014.

There was little rain this week once again save for a few showers at the start of the week. There was fair water on Monday (0.21m) and Tuesday (0.22m) but the river then fell and gave low water conditions for the rest of the week. The gauge average for the week read a disappointing 0.15 metres. The fishery was reasonably attended given the overall conditions with 39 visiting rods fishing for the week. There were a number of salmon caught during the better water at the start of the week. On Monday, Brian Smith recorded a 2½ lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 9. Ron Towner reported 2 grilse weighing 4 & 7lb caught on worm from beat 9. Andrew Gallagher registered 5lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 3 and Dessie Coyle accounted for 2 salmon weighing 6 & 7lb caught on a fly from beat 7. I await confirmation of other catches.
