A lot of hard work, but exciting times ahead for Knockaderry!

Jack O’Mahony, engineer, Gary Falconer architect, and Tom Connelly, Chairman of Waterford City and County Trout Anglers

Pictured below we have Jack O’Mahony, engineer, Gary Falconer architect, and Tom Connelly, Chairman of Waterford City and County Trout Anglers Association going over the final details of the completion of the Knockaderry Harbour Development Project.

Co-op Fund LogoThe club has been awarded a 32,000 euro grant from Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Co-op Fund (Trout and Course Fisheries Development) towards the completion of the project. This will entail safe moorings for 14 boats off pontoons which will be connected by a secure lockable causeway to the harbour wall.  A separate harbour is being made for anglers with disabilities, with a suitable toilet.  A container is being furnished as a fishing hut and store room. The whole area will be protected by security lights and will have safe parking for twenty cars.
The winter storm damage will be repaired and the surrounds landscaped.
We are aiming to finish the Development in time for a sixty angler, three day, fly fishing competition on the holiday weekend, 26th October, for the Knockaderry Trophy and other sponsored prizes.

A lot of hard work, but exciting times ahead!

Keep checking our website, which will have the latest news about the competition and stocking dates and generally how the lakes are fishing.

FLY FISHING ON KNOCKADERRY CARRIGAVANTRY BALLYSCANLON

Carrigavantry – This 30 acre reservoir is hidden in the hills behind Tramore.  The lake can be fished from the dam and road and the rest of the lake shore needs waders. The deepest part is the island at 10 feet.Prolific hatches of lake olives and damsels occur. Stocking is with both browns and rainbows. You could loose your catch here to a 20lb Pike!

Knockaderry – The deepest part of the lake is 24 feet at the dam tower, the average depth is 6ft and this results in good weed growth. Trout fatten fast in this fertile water on caddis, snails and stickle backs, while lake olives, buzzers sedges and damsels bring on prolific rises. This 80 acre reservoir is a traditional top of the water drift fishery.

New members are welcome and an active programme of fly tuition is pursued to encourage beginners and get our youth out into the countryside.

Not big fish but certainly a stack of fun nailing them in fast running current

Not so big but great fun catching them, that’s the sort of day Rookie Bass Angler Steven Neely had but he’s not complaining as this is what fishing is all about.

The fast current made the challenge great and Steven tells us “We had fish to 5lb – all nailing soft plastics like Fiiish Crazy Sand Eel and Megabass X Layer. Bumping plastics for bass is perhaps my most favourite method …. not sure why … maybe it is the electric takes but it really floats my boat.”

New mark proves productive for Steven Neely

A fine sized wrasse

Rookie Bass Angler Steven Neely has been a busy man.  He checks out some new marks which have been in the back of his mind to visit for some time.  He tells us “It lies under a set of rather large cliffs and getting the right conditions to fish it is tricky but boy did it produce results!

It is a series of flat rock which is pepper with gullies and encrusted in mussels!

A fine sized wrasse
A fine sized wrasse

The first session we were able to watch the wrasse mill about underneath our feet – it was bright and crystal clear …… Far from ideal but we managed a few decent enough fish.

Steven Neely - Wrasse Aug 3OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWe have returned to the mark twice since and started to explore other gullies and likely looking outcrops of rock and every time we go back we nail more and more fish.

One gully seems to fish better when we use static lures and yet the gully not 10ft away responds better to OTD! It is just mind scrambling how each gully seems to produce fish to different styles.

It is a challenge but I love it – it means I can get stuck into the technical bits and start experimenting with a few new ideas etc.

A selection of Beauties for the Wexford kayaker

Guide Sean Jordan of Bass fishing Wexford has been out and about refining kayak tactics.  Sean tells us ” One tactic in particular is proving deadly is drifting, and bouncing bucktails in tidal flows over sandy ground, and more on that another day. The good old slug-go, and the ever reliable spook also met a few bass on evening sessions this week. PS Always double check your safety gear before taking to the water in a kayak. ”

John Hallstead wins the Ernest Appleby Cup plus €1000 in the Catch and Release Sea Trout competition

Vincent Appleby presenting the cup to the winner John Hallstead at the award's ceremony

Ghillie Vincent Appleby reports on the salmon and sea trout fishing in the past week on Lough Currane from his blog at http://wwwsalmonandseatroutphotos.blogspot.com/

7/8/14 Lough Currane was on the quiet side, having said that local Angler Mr. Michael Clifford of the UK and Waterville caught one junior to his rod, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Mike O’Dwyer and for the rest of the angling community the least said the soonest mended. Just for the record, all the angling eyes will be on Lough Currane tomorrow and for good reason, the Lough Currane Championship 2014 where our Annual Sea trout Catch and Release Fly Fishing Competition starts!

8/8/14 The Lough Currane Fly Championship 2014! got well underway today but it was hard going but at least they saw some action. Now to the regular angling News, there isn’t any, either they failed to catch my Noble game fish or they failed to let their fingers do the talking and talking of failing to report, I was listening into some of the Anglers this morning and they were saying they were picking up a few Trout on the evening shift. Wind NW then veered SW this evening, light to calm this morning then light to fresh for the rest of the day 9/8/14 All eyes were on the Lough Currane Fly Championship 2014! Today and as always there is only one winner and that accolade goes to Mr. John Hallstead of Dingle, and he is no stranger in the winning of this competition. Just for the record I will put all results up once www.loughcurrane.com put up all the facts and results up on their website, reason being, it’s their competition and they should take centre stage.  Now to the Party and I can say without any fear of contradiction that the Landlord of the Waterville Inn Mr. Damian Duff and his good wife Sally, put on a fantastic dinner party and the food was à la Carte, so on behalf of all the anglers once again a big thank you to you both and all your staff for a great night. 10/8/14 Straight to today’s facts, Mr. Peter O’Donnell of Hull, while fishing with his gillie Mr. Neil O’ Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com  caught 6 Sea Trout ranging from Junior Class up to 3 ½ lbs. and there were a few boats manipulating and I am sure some of them caught the odd Sea Trout, but sadly they weren’t manipulating their fingers at the end of their day. Now I go www.loughcurrane.com as promised for yesterday’s results on the Lough Currane Fly Championship 2014.

Competitors at the Annual Catch and Release Sea Trout competition on Lough Currane

“The Lough Currane Championship 2014 held this weekend, Friday 8th and Saturday 9th August, was fished by 22 competitors in very hot and challenging conditions. The winner this year was John Hallstead, a regular participant and a previous winner!  He caught two good Sea Trout, including one over 5 lb. which won him, not only the Ernest Appleby cup for the longest fish but a voucher for €1000 worth of fishing tackle courtesy of John Buckley’s Emerger Tackle. The competition was followed by a lively dinner evening at the Waterville Inn. Altogether another very enjoyable event! The Committee extended thanks to Derek Evans, angling correspondent for the Irish Times, who kindly agreed, once again to present the prizes, to Damien Duff and his staff at the Waterville Inn for an excellent meal, to Vincent Appleby for once again photographing and donating the excellent framed photos of the event and last but not least to our hard working secretary and his fellow committee members, who helped to ensure the event ran so smoothly.”

11/8/14 just the odd Junior was caught. Wind as already stated with heavy showers.

12/8/14 My Noble Game fish were in a lethargic mood and my Noble Anglers weren’t far behind them, but to be fair to Lough Currane and the Waterville Fishery, what we need is a good flood to perk up the Game Fish as well as the anglers. Wind NW Fresh with showers.

13/8/14 There was a good NW wind blowing with heavy showers throughout the day and there was very little action in both departments, but at least one angler did see his fly line nearly go into the backing and that was Mr. Wim Woermeij of Holland, who caught one Trout on the drift, while fishing with his Gillie Nr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com

A few trout reported from Lough Arrow.

Lough Arrow

Angling effort during the hot weather was limited but now, with the onset of cooler weather, evening fishing is giving way to daytime angling.

On Bank Holiday Monday, David O’Keefe, Cork, caught a 2 lbs. trout on a sedge pattern, while Brian Kelly, Roscommon, witnessed trout in Jack’s Bay feeding on perch fry but he lured his 1.5 lbs. fish on a dry Daddy Long. Danny Quinn, Northern Ireland, had several fine trout on wet flies, best at 2.5 lbs.

A small amount of angling pressure on Lough Conn but some trout are still obliging

Lough Conn Angling conditions on Lough Conn are still difficult and only very few anglers ventured out trying their luck. Guests of Pontoon Bridge Hotel (www.pontoonbridge.com), John & Clair Hannifan, UK, caught four trout for 5 lbs., all on Green Peter patterns. Richard & James Bell, Northern Ireland, were also successful catching four on dry olives. Fishing out of Gerry Murphy Boat Hire (gmurphyboats@gmail.com), Colin Craig, Northern Ireland, had 3 trout and a salmon, while John Evans, also Northern Ireland, boated for trout for 5 lbs. Cloonamoyne Fishery (ian@cloonamoynefishery.com) reported 5 trout for Raymond Francis and Bob Taylor UK, best at 1.15 lbs. and 3 sea trout (all around 1 lb.) plus one nice brown at 2 lbs. for US angler Tony Brubaker.

On North Conn, Galway anglers Sean Joyce, Paul McLoughlin, Mike Murray & Brendan Coleman, were all successful catching trout up to 3.2lbs on dry flies.

Fishing Competition Results:

The Foxford Anglers held the Kilmurray Cup during the week. Twenty-three anglers took part in the event and results were as follows:

1st Dominic McGowan, Foxford 2 trout for 1.06 kg

2nd Joe Quinn, Ballina 1 Trout for 0.49 kg

3rd Jon Binley, Foxford 1 Trout for 0.47 kg

Steady salmon fishing reported from the Burrishoole Fishery.

Burrishoole Fishery

Fishery manager, Pat Hughes, reported a total of eight salmon from the Burrishoole Fishery for the week.

Amongst the successful anglers were A. Kennedy, E. McGreal, P. McGuiness (two fish), T. Gibbons, D. Lennon and T. Bradley.  All fish weighed between 3 lbs. and 5.5 lbs. The heaviest fish of the week was caught by S. O’Neill and weighed just over 6 lbs. There were 5 sea trout also caught and released for the same period. The best week of the season so far on the River Moy

Moy Fishery Ghillie, Declan Hughes, netting one of John Rocha’s three Ridge Pool salmon

River Moy
The River Moy saw its best week of the season so far. A flood on the Bank Holiday Monday resulted in rising water levels and provided improved fishing conditions for some time. The best of the fishing was between Ballina and Foxford with the Ballina Salmon Anglers’ water yielding most of the catches. However, water levels had dropped back to summer level by Friday.
On the Ridge Pool, John Rocha, Dublin, had 3 fish, one on worm and two on spinner, while Tipperary angler, Austin Kenny, caught three on spinner. Garreth Ruigrok, Dublin, was successful on the Moy Fishery’s Freshwater Beat where he landed two salmon on worm.

Anglers on the Mt. Falcon water enjoyed the best week of the season with three generations of the Jordan family, UK, catching a total of 22 salmon over 5 days; best fish at 10 lbs.  All mid river fisheries fished quite well for the week. On the Foxford Fishery, fly angler, Hank Shugg, US, caught and released two salmon, best at 7 lbs.
Further upriver, Monday’s spate didn’t really improve angling and, as a consequence, only a moderate number of fish were reported from this part of the Moy including 2 salmon on spinner for French angler Francis Verveche on the Cloongee Fishery.

Anglers are asked to be vigilant with regard to nursery streams going low on Lough Corrib.

Lough Corrib

Only small numbers of anglers were taking to the water over the last week and reported very few fish moving.  However, the forecast for the coming week looks more favourable for angling with cooler conditions and some fresh water.

Anglers are asked to be vigilant with regard to nursery streams going low. Contact your local fishery officer if you think fish are in danger.
