Reasonable Green Peter fishing on Lough Arrow

There is still reasonable Peter Fishing on Lough Arrow. However, night fishing has not been as productive as in previous weeks.  John James McDermottroe had 2 brown trout (1.75 lbs. and 2 lbs.) on Green Peter, while Francis White landed 5 fish averaging 3 lbs. on wet flies.

Few fish Conn in the heat but good catches for those who did

The warm and humid weather resulted in reduced angling activity on Loughs Conn and Cullin this week but those who did venture out were rewarded with some good fishing.

Fishing out of Pontoon Bridge Hotel (www.pontoonbridge.com), Peter Giddings, Wales, had 23 trout over 3 days for 30 lbs. on Daddy Long Legs. JP Conway, Co. Down, caught 2 trout for 3 lbs. on Green Peter, while Thomas Garchinsi, Canada, boated 4 fish for two evenings’ fishing all on dry Olives. Angling guide Jack Mellett reported two trout each over 2 lbs. for Colleen and Cassidy Sash from the UK.

Conn Knight from Athlone, guest of Gerry Murphy Boat Hire ([email protected]), landed a magnificent 7 lbs. trout while trolling for salmon on a Silver Spoon.

Ian Wise, Cloonamoyne Fishery ([email protected]), reported 4 trout at 1 lb. each from the Woodford Shallows.

Elsewhere, local anglers John Warren and Stephen Browne had 2 trout each averaging 1.75 lbs. on Green Peter and dry fly patterns.

Good numbers of salmon at the Burrishoole Fishery

The dry weather impacted heavily on fishing during the week. However, there are good numbers of salmon showing in Lough Furnace but due to the high salinity level the fish have gone a bit off the take. A change in weather with some rain should definitely improve fishing conditions on Lough Furnace.

Nevertheless, some anglers were successful including Fishery Manager, Pat Hughes who had a 5 lbs. grilse. G. Nevin and Tim Aldiss were also amongst the lucky anglers with fish of 3.75 lbs. and 4 lbs. respectively. There were also 13 sea trout caught and released for the week.

Despite the low water levels and humid conditions which prevailed for much of the week, a total of 431 salmon were reported bringing the season total to 2,704.  This was the best week of the season so far. The low levels have resulted in grilse now holding in the middle and lower reaches but have impacted heavily on angling upstream.

With 72 salmon reported, the Moy Fishery saw its best week of the year. On the Ridge Pool, fly anglers Raymond Steward, NI, Gerry Kelly, Dublin and Victoria Roberts, UK, all had grilse averaging 4.5 lbs.  Garry Perks, UK, had 3 fish on fly on the Weir Pool, two of which he released. Donal Carney, Athlone, was successful on the Cathedral Beat where he landed two grilse at 4.5 lbs. and 5.25 lbs.; also on fly.

Ten-year old Christopher Condon, Mullingar, had a memorable day on the Rinanney Fishery as he caught his first ever salmon, a fine fish of 8 lbs.!

Further upriver, regular visitor Klaus Lehmann, Germany had a 4.5 lbs. fish (worm) on Cloongee, while Gerry McNamara, Offaly, landed 4 grilse, one on fly and 3 on worm.

Irish team makes history at World Feeder Fishing Championships

Richard Pratt, Ireland, had the biggest individual catch

History was made on Sunday when Garbolino Team Ireland took the silver medal at the 4th FIPSed World Feeder Fishing Championships on Inniscarra Lake, Coachford, County Cork.   Ireland has produced medallists in International events over the years but this is the first time the National Team have been on the podium, second to the all-conquering Team England who entered the competition at hot favourites after the five practise days. The Netherlands threatened Ireland’s position throughout the two days of the competition finally finishing with a Bronze, just 6kg separated the second and third positions showing what a close competition it was.

The winning Irish Team!

Brenton Sweeney, ireland’s Team Manager says:-

I am absolutely elated for the team to have achieved the silver medal and to have made history with the first team medal for coarse angling for Ireland and the NCFFI.  Personally for me it’s unbelievable in my first year managing the team, the amount of practise and effort put in by the team has paid off and I’m very proud of them.  I would also like to thank our sponsors Garbolino for the premium tackle and Sensas Ireland for their groundbait, but in particular Irish Bait & Tackle the only supplier of fresh bait in Ireland and supporter of all our international teams.

An excited Team England were delighted to see Steve Ringer take the individual Gold medal with Mick Vials also collecting the Bronze. Team Germany’s Felix Scheuermann took the silver just one small fish away from the Gold.  The new World Championship match length looked splendid with the anglers in a row along the bank decorated by the event sponsors Tubertini and Van Den Eynde and has made its place in the history books as the venue for Team Ireland’s first ever podium finish and Team England’s first win in this event and Steve Ringers first gold.  The fishing was excellent and with the 25 anglers at the Garden Centre section Inniscarra Lake produced three quarters of a ton of fish on both days with an average of over 6kg per angler for the competition.

Der Casey, Chairman, NCFFI :-

This was one of the largest projects undertaken by the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland, NCFFI and has produced a legacy for coarse angling in Ireland.  This project which has been three years in the making from planning to the championships, achieved in partnership with the ESB, Inland Fisheries and Cork County Council with initial funding from the Avondhu Blackwater Partnership, has been an outstanding success.  The icing on the cake was the silver medal for our national team. The NCFFI would like to thank all those involved along the way in particular the stewards who travelled from far and wide to help out and to the village of Coachford who displayed the very best of Irish hospitality to the visiting nations.

The village of Coachford was the base for the championships hosting many of the teams and spectators along with all the stewards and organisers.  The community and local businesses ensured the village was draped in colour to welcome the anglers arriving to the championships; from the flying of the flags of the 25 nations at Rooves Bridge to the fabulous ‘Parade of the Nations’ when the streets were lined by supporters and made for a fabulous spectacle.  The emotional Opening and Closing ceremonies took place in the Aghabullogue GAA Complex and the event closed with a splendid gala buffet at the Lee Valley Golf Club for all the competitors.  A fun evening of good food and dancing was had by all.

Double Gold for Steve Ringer

Dave Baker, Bristol:-

As regular visitors to the angling festivals organised by the village of Coachford we wanted to give something back and volunteered to help steward the event.  We are absolutely delighted to have been part of the championships and wouldn’t have missed it for the world!  The Event organisers NCFFI and the local community should be very proud.

The sparkling Inniscarra Lake and the new world championship match length has created a legacy for angling in the area and we can expect to see more events at an international level here in the future.

Battle of the Bass Catchers in Cork Harbour tagging programme

bass
Richie with a really impressive bass ready for tagging

Richie Ryan reports that the bass tracking has continued apace in Cork Harbour of late…

Dr Tom Doyle heard a report that a certain guide had managed to catch and release six bass from a local area last week. The tagging team went to that shore mark the following day and landed and tagged five bass in total. The fish were named John,  Cian, Fintan and Colman Ryan and Taylor Russell. Members of the Cork Harbour Angling Hub have been busy catching and tagging bass this week also and in fact have exceeded the total for last year already. Dr Tom Doyle, ably assisted by Damian Haberlin, are impressed at the progress so far. Richie Ryan’s team of Kevin Mc Loughlin and himself are ahead after two shore outings with 9 bass tagged and returned. Jim Clohessy’s boat team have 6 fish transmitting after two boat outings.

And just like Jim ,well nearly, the Eire Bass guide managed to bag a near specimen bass called Ollie after his brother in America. In addition Flo and Gerard (Ryan)were named amongst this weeks batch and Killian ( Mc Loughlin) also has a bass swimming around Cork Harbour with his named after him. Unfortunately one bass was too small to tag.

The tagging team hard at work

The project has been a great success overall with the anglers and the UCC team showing great commitment and dedication. We have a good return on fish tagged last year as believe it or not the batteries last that long ! So when the data is compiled and published it should make very interesting reading for all anglers. As Kevin Mc Loughlin says, ” it just goes to show that catch and release does really work”.

Tough fishing in humid conditions on Mask as World Cup fever heats up

Ronan Cusack reports that angling on Mask could only be described as tough, particularly for the second half of the week as high pressure dominated the weather. The best report of this week came from Mike Coyne (Letterfrack, Co Galway) who fished wets across the deep on Tuesday, landing 12 trout exceeding the legal limit. Mike also reported returning 8 undersize and rising several more fish throughout the day (best fish 1.75, all returned). Local anglers Kevin Egan and Declan Gibbons also had a good day on Monday last, landing 6 keepers, and again returning numerous undersize (best fish 1.5lbs, all returned). The latter part of the week saw a change as weather settled back to sunshine and light winds. Tourmakeady anglers Michael Shevlin and Eddy Gibbons had a tough day on Sunday finishing with 2 keepers and a few undersize. Bart Crowley and Dennis Kelleher (Ballinrobe) also had a tough day on Sunday finishing with 1 trout and a few undersize. David Connors (Ballinrobe) spent a day in the shallows on a combination of wets and dries over the weekend and finished with1 fish for 1.5lbs. David reported excellent hatches of both Mayfly and sedge amongst the islands across the middle of the lake.

Hopefully we’ll see a change in weather conditions over the next few days as the first heat of the much sought after World Cup kicks off next week.
