Ruairi Coleman With A Lovely Sommthhound Taken on a Recent Outing
Ruairi Coleman from the Swords Angling Centre reports that the sea fishing on the east coast is still going strong. Ruairi fished two east coast rock marks this week, on the first he had loads of dabs and codling. On the second he had some nice smooth-hounds and one big mackerel. Some mackerel have been reported from north Dublin peirs but the mackerel fishing is still patchy.
For up to date angling information and a range of top gear why not drop into Ruairi at his shop in Swords. He stocks a full range of sea, game, pike and coarse angling tackle and bait. Swords Angling Centre is located in Applewood Village next door to the Orchard Public House.

Sean Carty of Carty’s Land and Sea Sports in Bundoran, Co. Donegal updates us on the fishing in the north of the country:
On the shore the fishing has remained good with anglers having some great sessions on Tullan strand, Streedagh and Mermaids cove . All these locations have had reports of plenty of Flounder ,Sea trout , a few Turbot and plenty of Dog fish at night . Of the rocks around the Bundoran area there has been plenty of good ,up to specimen size Wrasse being caught with some anglers reporting to have caught up to 30 fish per session . There has also been some good pollock caught from Rougey and the Quarry flag up to about 7lb and the most notable report this week has to be a 2lb Bass caught from beside the fairy bridges .
Ballan at Bundoran
On the boats this last 2 weeks fishing has been good with all the local charter vessels reporting plenty of action with good sized Pollock , ling , Cod , Coalies etc . The coming weeks should be good with the start of our shark season and hopefully a continuation of last years Blue finn Tuna action .
Nice Ling on the Prospector
Next Sunday 27th July Mullaghmore Sea angling club will host their annual open boat competition .3 boats will leave the harbour at 9.30 sharp . For further information contact Boris Seigel on 087 6962052 .
Sean Carty of Carty’s Land and Sea Sports in Bundoran, Co. Donegal updates us on the fishing in the north of the country:
The Duff has fished fairly steadily over the last 2 weeks with plenty of overnight rainfalls leading to small floods that have allowed fish to move . There has been fish caught most days on some part of the river and the most successful method by far has been the prawn followed by the spinner and then the fly .
Katie Carty with her 1st Salmon
The most popular colour prawn has definitely been purple or pink and there was also quite a few fish caught on green or brown ones especially upstream . On the flys anything small that’s red , yellow or black has done the business . In particular the size 14 red francis shrimp comes highly recommended . The weather forecast for the week ahead is for mostly dry conditions so its not looking too promising for the Salmon angler.
Water levels are in perfect order and fish are certainly running the system. After our small rise in water levels another good run of fish went through but these fish are on a mission.
Clarity is at about 3ft with a peat stain colour.
Our Russian guest Sergi guided by Bob landed 7 fish for his week heaviest 9lbs. John Brock landed a nice fish of 8lbs off the bishops beat on fly.
Flowing through Cork and Waterford, in the south east of Ireland, the river Blackwater is most famous for it’s salmon fishing. Fort William Fishery has 5 beats on the river, which include stretches particularly suited to flyfishing. Our beats offer a wide variety of water, suitable for both beginners and the more experienced fishermen. In summer we have also good numbers of sea trout. On the estate there is two self-catering cottages and tackle/freezer room. Whether you like fishing for salmon or fly fishing for sea trout, Fort William will meet all your game angling requirements and much more.

Mark Gannon of Courtmacsherry angling has a good number of species accounted for this week so far and a super skate, he reports:
Courtmacsherry Estuary, inshore and offshore are all producing some great fishing at the moment. Shark fishing with fish to 2.20m, 7 and 3 lost in 4 hrs fishing yesterday, Ling to 18lbs from the inshore wrecks. With pollack, ling, conger, ray, cod, coalfish, bull husks and dogs, the group from Belgium fishing on the Lady Louise are up to 19 species so far this week.
Highlight for the Lady Patricia was a common skate of 180 lbs landed yesterday, and the bass fishing in the estuary has been terrific with live bait the best method followed by peeler crab and the lures are catching a few but tough going.

Ireland Feeder Fishing Team who took an historic 2nd place in the World Feeder Fishing Championships in Coachford at the weekend
It has been an extremely hot few days here in Ireland and the heavy rain that fell in some parts of Ireland over the weekend is already a distant memory. What won’t be soon forgotten though were some of the great catches by anglers here in Ireland last week.
Catch of the week goes to Steve Ringer for his super performance in the World Feeder Fishing Championships – Double gold winner
History was made on Sunday when Garbolino Team Ireland took the silver medal at the 4th FIPSed World Feeder Fishing Championships on Inniscarra Lake, Coachford, County Cork. Ireland has produced medallists in International events over the years but this is the first time the National Team have been on the podium, second to the all-conquering Team England who entered the competition at hot favourites after the five practise days. The Netherlands threatened Ireland’s position throughout the two days of the competition finally finishing with a Bronze, just 6kg separated the second and third positions showing what a close competition it was. Elsewhere in the coarse world there were good bags of fish, bream hybrids and tench, reported from a number of Cavan venues including Arva, Cootehill and Ballinamore. The IADA Open was fished on Lough Muckno and catches there confirmed its reputation amongst the visiting anglers. Feeder tactics are producing some lovely fishing on Lough Ramor with hybrids, roach and perch making up the bags. Oaklands Fishery in the south east continues to fish well while up in Lough Gall anglers might be interested in targeting carp to 30lb. Brother Lake was the setting for the Carrickmacross Coarse Angling and Youth Development Club Fishing Summer Camp 2014. 28 budding anglers took part and we wish them well on the angling journey.
Hot weather often puts an end to summer piking but two English anglers fishing in the Foxford area had numerous takes fishing surface lures and large poppers on the fly rod and finished up with 7 pike up to 95cm.
The weekends rain was warmly welcomed by salmon anglers and there was a great increase in catches, particularly in the Connemara area. The week ending 19th July saw the Kylemore Abbey Fishery add a further 16 fish to the book for 23 rod days. Delphi had a big increase in salmon in the system, but they were not easily got. The sea trout fishing there picked up though and 50 fish were caught for the week. The spates saw good fishing on the Erriff where their week’s catch totalled 14 salmon and 44 sea trout. The Galway Fishery is in fantastic order at the moment with perfect water levels and great numbers of fish showing, the catch for the last couple of weeks is 136 salmon. Despite the low water levels on the Moy and humid conditions which prevailed for much of the week, a total of 431 salmon were reported bringing the season total to 2,704. With 72 salmon reported, the Moy Fishery saw its best week of the year. The weather slowed things down on Lough Currane. A few salmon were taken each day and some good sea trout fishing was possible at times with a mix of juniors and fish to 3lbs or so particularly over the weekend.. Salmon fishing picked up on the Bandon at the weekend too and the first fish in a while for landed following the long dry spell.
Good tope fishing was reportetd from Red Bay on the Antrim Coast where Dutch anglers have enjoyed good sport. Tope also feature on the east coast and Rob McClean was a Catch of the Week contender with his lovely 171cm tope which weighed in at 64lb 2oz. Good pollack and cod fishing is reported from Kilmore Quay where cod to 10lbs have been brought tot he boat. Charter anglers in Youghal reported some great sport and junior angler had a fine 19lb 7oz conger amongst a haul of 16 species. Further west in Unionhall anglers had good fishing for skate and took 16 other species too. Sharks featured in the catches of Kerry anglers with some good ling also falling to the whole mackerel baits. The bass fishing from boat and shore continues in Cork Harbour where local anglers are making a huge contribution to the bass tagging programme that is ongoing there. Bass were also the quarry for one Dublin based angler fishing in Kerry, his best result was three fish in 20 minutes.
There is still reasonable Peter fishing on Lough Arrow. However, night fishing has not been as productive as in previous weeks. The warm and humid weather resulted in reduced angling activity on Loughs Conn and Cullin this week but those who did venture out were rewarded with some good fishing. One angler had 23 trout for 30lb in 3 days. Angling on Mask could only be described as tough, particularly for the second half of the week as high pressure dominated the weather. It was a similar tale at Lough Corrib where there was good fishing in the early part of the week on the Corrib but the settled weather over the weekend slowed down the fishing and very few anglers took to the water. Wrapped in a humid cloak of mid-summer heat Lough Sheelin fished well this week and angling numbers noticeably increased towards the weekend. The best of the fishing was in the evenings when some heart stopping sport was had by anglers. Congratulations go to the Mallow A Team who won the Munster Youth Fly Fishing Championships on Lough Leane at the weekend in tough conditions. Eoin Curtin, who won the individual competition, is heading out to Poland on Wednesday July 23rd with the Irish team to compete in the World Youth Fly Fishing Championships and we wish Eoin and his team mates every success.
Tight lines especially here in Ireland,

Eamonn Hayes, skipper of the Autumn Dream which sails daily from Kilmore Quay in Wexford reports on the fishing in his area:
The Reef fishing is still very good with plenty Cod & Pollack on them , Ling are increasing as the tides ease. I haven’t done any trips on Ray Tope Bass or Flat’s yet , as the Mackerel are very scarce but had a couple doz today so will be targeting all species from now on . Best Cod over the last few days was just under 10 lb and Pollack into double figures.
The forecast for the of this week and over the coming weekend is very good. The forecast for the coming few days is good enough, with light variable winds.
More regular reports on the fishing from now on as I am back full time now.
Golden Redfish commonly found off Iceland, Greenland and Norway
A long-living fish which prefers the chillier waters of northern latitudes has been caught by an Irish fishing vessel on the Porcupine Bank.
The golden redfish, or sebastes norvegicus, is prevalent in Iceland, and can be found along the North American coast, south of Greenland and along the Norwegian coast.
The 5.9kg specimen was caught by Aran islander Tomás Conneely of the Ocean Harvester II, a Rossaveal, Co Galway, vessel which fishes for prawns on the Porcupine…
Ullcatch in Tralee tell us that they had Bryan O’Keeffe out fishing with them on their latest Shark outing. Bryan managed to catch a cracking 125lb blue shark and both the shark and Bryan were happy to stand in for a photo before release.. Also in the images is a Ling that fell to a whole mackerel while fishing for shark.
Ghillie/Guide Vincent Appleby reports on the recent fishing in the Lough Currane area:
17/07/14 Lough Currane was on the humidity side and my Noble Game Fish were keeping a low profile both in the trolling and fly departments, so we will head upstream to the famous Butler Pool and of www.watervillegolflinks.ie and the same couldn’t be said there, with 2 Grilse caught on the fly by Mr. Donal Eustace of Kilkenny, and as always guided by the one and only, the King of the river on the Waterville system Mr. Junior Scully. Wind South and light with good cloud cover. Tonight we have thunder and lightening and what ever tomorrow will bring? More News I hope ?
Breaking News from the hired out Boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Straight to the Sea Trout fly Department, and here are the late results. First in the striking zone was Mr. Paul Hyland with 3 Sea trout up to 4 lbs to his fly rod, Mr. Alex Donovan caught 12 Sea trout from Junior class up to 1 ½ lbs, and last but not least, Mr. Cameron Heaton caught 1 Sea Trout to his rod, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com
Master Paul Pipes
18/07/14 Lough Currane crowns another young angler with his first Noble Salmon and that accolade goes to 13 year old German/Swiss Angler Master Paul Pipes, of Bern, Switzerland, who caught a fine 3 lbs Salmon/Grilse on the troll and finished his day off with a fine Sea Trout also caught on the troll, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and his younger Brother Felix gave him a helping hand when it was time to take the photos, and just for the record Felix was fishing on the upper lakes on Lough Namona and helped to catch 15 Brownies on the drift, with his Mum and Dad. Now we head for the fly department, a guest fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy and of www.fishingwithdom.com caught a fine Grilse in the 5 lbs class. Wind W light to fresh and very warm with good cloud cover at times.
Felix and Paul Pipes from Switzerland
19/07/14 My Noble Anglers were as lethargic as their Noble game fish and with no wind to manipulate their flies and bright sunshine, what do you expect, miracles? well if they did I am afraid they didn’t pray hard enough so here endeth the lesson.
20/07/14 I Start today’s notes on congratulating Irish Golf Star, Mr. Rory Mcilroy, for wining the British Open Golf Championship and may it be the first of many. Sadly there were no Gold medals won today on Irelands Premier Salmon and Sea Trout Lake, but here are some of their scores cards. In the www.lakelandshouse.com hired out boat fly department, Mr. Martin Burns and his Son Rob, caught a fine 2 ½ lbs. Sea Trout and caught a few Juniors which were sportingly returned, Now we cut across the Lake to the North side and the Bungalow, Mr. Neil Glivan, caught 1 Sea Trout to his rod, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com Wind NW with some cloud cover and very warm.
21/07/14 Wind was SE with misty rain on and off all day and there was only 1 good Sea Trout recorded on the drift, that Accolade goes to Mrs Ann Curran of Dublin, who caught a fine 3 ½ lbs Sea Trout on the fly, while fishing with her Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com For the rest of the angling community, there was very little action in the wild Game fish department, going by my mobile phone.
22/07/14 Straight to the backdate department and in the words of Northern Ireland angler, Mr. Andy Wishart, my nephew Gavin caught a 5 pound grilse yesterday and I caught a 4 pound grilse today. Both on the troll, Gavin also caught a 2 pound sea trout today, and all I say to that is voi·là, and just for the record Andy was fishing in a hired out boat from Waterville Boats and at [email protected] Now we head for the Bungalow, Mr. Mike Power caught and released a 1 ½ lbs. Sea Trout on the drift, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Sheawww.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com Wind S moderate
23/07/14 Lough Currane was on the quiet side for the majority of Anglers with only one Gillie and his client reporting their catch, and that was Mr. Mark O’Malley of the UK, who caught 1 Trout on the on fly, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com and for the rest of the fly and trolling anglers they either failed to catch their common dominator, or more likely failed to let their fingers do the talking at the end of the day. Wind, and going by what I here there is plenty of it going around Waterville at the moment but not on the lake today and what wind was there was all over the place, with reasonable cloud cover and very humid.
That is your ration for the week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.
