Project Partners and Sponsors Meet at World Championships Venue, Inniscarra Reservoir, Coachford, Co. Cork, Ireland 9th July 2014.
In 1996 at the Home Internationals held on Inniscarra Reservoir, David Taylor the Irish Team Manager at the time, whilst reviewing the fabulous fishing experienced suggested we attempt to hold a World Championship on the venue. This was echoed by all the countries involved and here we are 18 years later ready to receive the 25 nations competing in the 4th FIPS-ed World Feeder Fishing Championships hosted by the National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland.

Not quite 18 years, but it all started in 2011 with honorary president of the NCCFFI, Oliver McGauley making a bid at the International congress of anglers to bring this event to Ireland. After many months of campaigning and planning by Inniscarra Lake Tourism Development Ltd. funding was awarded via the Avondhu Blackwater Partnership Ltd. to develop a 2.8km stretch of the reservoir to International angling standards. Additional funding and support from Inland Fisheries Ireland IFI, Cork County Council and the ESB who granted a 25 year license to the ILTDL for the venue has made this project a reality.

Today our sponsors and partners met at the new World Championship Stretch of Inniscarra Reservoir to review the completed venue.
Frank Barry, Manager of the ESB Lee Hydro Stations says –
“the ESB is delighted to be supporting the local Community in the hosting of these very prestigious World Fishing Championships and he hopes on behalf of ESB that the new walkway will be enjoyed by locals & visitors alike for many generations to come.”
Louis Duffy, Director of Community, Economic Development & Tourism, Cork County Council said –
“The development of this facility which Cork County Council is pleased to be associated with has enabled the hosting of this World Fishing Event and is of enormous economic and tourism value to the local community. It will enable the area to be promoted as a world class fishing area hopefully attracting future championships to take place here.”
With International teams from 25 nations competing, Ireland has attracted the best attendance in the event’s short history. The best feeder anglers in the world will arrive on Sunday 13th July to take part in five days of practise on the venue with the competition days of this world class event co-sponsored by angling industry giants Tubertini and Van Den Eynde taking place on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th July.
Suzanne Campion, Inland Fisheries Ireland IFI says –
“Inland Fisheries Ireland congratulates the NCFFI in bringing the World Feeder Fishing Championships to Ireland, showcasing the very best of Irish Angling. We wish all competitors tightlines and look forward to welcoming them to this new world class venue.”
A full week’s entertainment is being organised around the championships in Coachford Village to welcome the 240 team members, stewards and spectators.
The official opening by Mr Fergus O’Dowd TD, Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Energy & Natural Resources will take place at the Aghabullogue GAA Complex after a ‘Parade of Nations’ through Coachford Village on Thursday 17th July from 6pm. The event will close with a Medal Ceremony at Aghabullogue GAA Complex in honour of the winners on Sunday 20th July at 5pm followed by a Gala Dinner for the competitors & sponsors at Lee valley Golf Club.
Speaking about the event, Deirdre Cole of Fáilte Ireland said –

“Fáilte Ireland, the Irish Tourism Development Authority, is delighted to be associated with this major angling event here in Cork. It is a fantastic opportunity to promote coarse angling in Ireland to the world through our involvement with Sky Sports. The positive images of the excellent new facility at Inniscarra Reservoir, in Coachford, will be broadcast internationally portraying Cork and indeed Ireland as the ideal place to come for competitive and relaxing angling.

We are also hosting international media to cover the event and it is our hope that the coverage created will be a lasting experience and encourage overseas visitors to come and participate in angling in the future. Indeed, the benefit of visiting journalists to the region is hugely important to local tourism providers and to the region as a whole.”

Conor Graham wins leg 3 of Galway Bay boat master angler series

Galway Buccaneers SAC reports:

Congratulations to Conor Graham on Winning leg 3 of our boat master angler series sponsored by Galway Bay Fishing. It’s Conor’s second win on the bounce and it was a hard won victory, with Sean Gerrity running close behind in 2nd place and Conor Mountaine who took 3rd spot and Steve Turner who finished 4th were in the mix right up until lines up.

We had another fine summers day with what little wind there was being countered by the tide making for ideal conditions for a slow drift. Mackerel were being caught in abundance for the first time this year and we were once again treated to a magical display from a pod of Minke Whales on our way out to the fishing grounds.

Galway Buccaneers SAC - Master boat anglers compFishing was good from the start with a variety of species being boated including a specimen Ballan Wrasse for John Peel a cracking Coalfish for Denis Healy, Conor Mountaine had a nice Cod, David Spokes had some lovely Pollack as did Marcin Tomaszek while Steve Turner caught a decent sized Cod a fish that’s proved elusive for him on Irish Shores.

We finished with 14 Species including: Cuckoo Wrasse, Ballan Wrasse, Cod, Ling, Coalfish, Pollack, Pouting, Poor Cod, Whiting, Dogfish, Haddock, Grey Gurnard, Mackerel and Launce

Thanks as always to our skipper Kevin MacGabhann for a great days fishing and for looking after us with refreshment and ensuring everyone was taken care of. Full result to follow

Low water conditions impacting on salmon fishing catches on most rivers in the Cork Kerry area

LAUNE SALMON AND TROUT ANGLERS’ ASSOCIATION WATERS AND BEAT 3

Angling Report 30th June (Email to Laune Angling Report)

Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association waters and Beat 3.

As of Monday 30th June water fallen well back to 1 foot on the gauge at Johnston’s, river in need of some good rain.

News of fish for the week was as scarce as hen’s teeth.  Our four French visiting anglers mentioned last week who were fishing Laune Anglers waters went away fishless.  Any wonder they will have a fishing destination other than Kerry in their holiday plans for 2015??

Granted the Laune is low but there is no scarcity of wild salmon in our fish shops so why are our members and visiting anglers finding it so hard to even meet a fish?

Permits for Laune Anglers waters right now cost only €25 per day.

Beat 3:           Beat 3 needs two feet of water for any good salmon fishing.  On the plus side the trout fishing conditions are still good especially in the evenings.

For Beat 3 Permit Costs click on: Beat 3 Permit Prices 2014

Prospects: Not good.  With six months of the anglers season on the Laune already gone and only three to go, most of our members have yet to meet a fish.  Things need to take a quick turn for the better.  With low water and no rain forecast it’s going to be another while before we will have any good news to report.

Anglers please note: A ‘One Day’ salmon permit for Beat 3 only costs €25

ANGLING REPORT 7TH JULY (EMAIL TO LAUNE ANGLING REPORT)

Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association waters and Beat 3.

As of Monday 7th July water fallen well back to 6inches on the gauge at Johnston’s, river in need of some good rain.

News of fish almost non-existent.  Put it down to the low river conditions and hot water but the fish are not just there.  There were a few sea trout caught for the week and a few grilse but nothing to write home about.

As we move well into the third last month of a ‘nine month’ angling season anglers on the Laune are not happy with their lot.  2014 is looking like the third bad angling season in a row.

Permits for Laune Anglers waters right now cost only €25 per day.

Beat 3:           Beat 3 needs three feet of water to get it going again.  On the plus side the trout fishing conditions are still good especially in the evenings.

Steady salmon and sea trout fishing reported from Lough Currane.

Ghillie Vincent Appleby reports on the salmon and sea trout fishing in the past week on Lough Currane from his blog at http://wwwsalmonandseatroutphotos.blogspot.com/

3/7/14 Mr. Colin Lynam takes the headlines in the salmon and sea trout fly department with a grilse and 5 sea trout, fishing with his ghillie, The MD, all I can say is MD and Colin got their medication spot on, it’s a pity the same can’t be said for the rest of my noble anglers. Wind SW fresh and overcast with light misty rain throughout the day.

4/7/14 Straight to the sea trout department, and first we start on the south side of the lake, Mr. Stefan Kaufman, caught a fine 3 lb. sea trout on the fly, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com now we head north side, at the Bungalow, Mr. Joe Johnson fishing with his ghillie Mr, Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught a fine sea trout on the drift, also in good form, fishing out of the Bungalow, Cliff, caught 2 sea trout on the drift, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com There was a nice westerly blowing down the lake with good cloud cover and just for the record it made a flood early this morning which is no harm and was badly needed, will be more precise of the amount in tomorrow’s notes.

Ben Johnson with two grilse from Lough Currane.
Ben Johnson with two grilse from Lough Currane.

5/7/14 There was some good fishing on Lough Currane today after yesterday’s small flood. First in the fly   zone, with two fine grilse in the 3 to 4 lbs. class, was Mr. Ben Johnson of the UK, and finished his day off with a C&R Sea Trout in the 3 lb. class, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and staying with Mr. Neil O’Shea, yesterday I reported incorrectly that Joe Johnson, only caught 1 sea trout and in actual fact he caught 3 fine sea trout on the fly all in the 2 lb. class. Sorry for this discrepancy. Staying at the Bungalow, Mr. Neil Atkinson caught a fine sea trout of 2 ½ lb. on the fly while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com Neil was going to celebrate his sea trout with a cuppa tea but in the words of his ghillie, no tea after 4 pm union rules, so they all headed for the Waterville Inn for AA meeting with a good pint of Guinness. Now we cut across the Lake to the south side and the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com an angler fishing on his own caught a fine grilse on the troll. Staying with the south side, Mr. Kevin O’Sullivan of Lake road Waterville caught a fine Sea Trout of 2 lb. on the drift, now we cut back to the north side, Mr. Donagh McCarthy of the USA and Waterville caught a fine grilse on the troll with his ghillie. Now we head back to the sea trout fly department, Mr. Colin Lynam caught 3 sea trout on the fly, fishing with his Gillie MD, and in MD’s back date department, yesterday Mr. Colin Lynam caught 4 sea trout up to 4 lb. again all caught on the fly. Wind NW light with showers. Amount of rainfall yesterday was 14.7 mm.

6/7/14 All the news comes from the north side, so straight to the action, Mr. Kilian McDaid of Derry, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught a cracker of a salmon of 15 ½ lb. on the troll, after they dispatched my noble salmon, they put their trolling rods to one side, and went for a few drifts and caught 4 sea trout ranging from 1 lb. up to 4 lb. and were all sportingly put back to fight another day. Now to the sea trout hired out boat department of Waterville Boats and at [email protected] Mr. David O Brien and Pat McKiernan of Ennis Co Clare, caught 3 fine sea trout on the drift ranging 1 ¾ lb. up to 3 lb.

7/7/14 Mr. Kilian McDaid of Derry, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com was in great form again in the C&R fly department with 2 juniors and finished his day with a fine sea trout in the 3 lbs. class. And staying with the Bungalow, Mr. Graham Elwood and Mr. A. Parsons, fishing with their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 5 sea trout on the drift, ranging from Juniors up to 3 ½ lbs. Wind westerly light to calm with the odd heavy shower this morning and bright sunshine in the afternoon with reasonable cloud cover at times.

8/7/14 I will start in the criticism department, there were 10 boats out and only 4 boats reported there catches so here are the Waterville fishery supporters!! First in the striking zone was Mr. Graham Elwood and Mr. Meurig Parsons, fishing with their ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 5 sea trout, ranging from 1 lb. up to 5 lb. and were all sportingly returned. Staying with the north shore, Mr, J. Smith, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught 6 sea trout the biggest of which was 3 lb. Staying with the sea trout, Mr. Kilian McDaid of Derry, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com caught a Junior on the drift. Now we cut across to the south side, Mr. Liam Ellis of Waterville caught a fine sea trout in the 3 lb. class, on the fly. Wind NW light with the odd shower.

9/7/14 I will start backwards with the evening shift, US and Waterville angler, Mr. Donagh McCarthy caught 2 sea trout on the fly, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com Now to the regular fly dayshift department, first in the reel singing zone, were Mr. Graham Elwood and Mr. Meurig Parsons, fishing with their ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 4 sea trout up to 2 ½ lb. And last but not least, Mr. Kilian McDaid of Derry, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com again caught a Junior on the fly. Wind was moderate WNW with good cloud cover.

Challenging Fly Fishing for Trout on the River Fane

Eamonn Takes A Trout to the Net in Diffiicult Conditions on the Fane

Members of a French group visiting with “De la Plume au Voyages” spent some time recently with north east angling guide Eamonn Conway. Despite the difficult conditions caused by very low water conditions the group still managed to catch some trout. Nymphing and dry fly were all tried to eke out those wily Fane trout.

Eamonn Conway is one of the country’s top angling guides and a qualified APGAI Ireland Instructor. If you fancy a days guided fishing with Eamonn why not drop him an email at [email protected] or give him a call at 086 1242966. Lady angler Michelle Gallagher lands a super tope and is our 'Catch of the Week' winner

Michelle Gallagher didn’t shy away from the big fish when she went out with skipper Daryl Ewing of Sligo Boat Charters , this lady had her hands full with a fine tope which was as big as herself !  Michelle hooked the fish beautifully in the corner of the mouth so she swam happily away after its removal and the photo shoot!  A real pro !

Water tempetatures rise at Delphi early this week, fish do not !

West side of Inis Turk

Fishery manager David McEvoy reports from Delphi:

Fishing conditions here at Delphi were extremely difficult all week until Friday as we finally got some much needed rain on Thursday night, 21.3mms to be exact which put the river up to 40 by lunchtime. After the long dry spell it was however rather coloured at first.

This was in stark contrast to earlier in the week when our Mediterranean weather continued and the river dropped off to minus 10, with the tip of the rock in the Quarry pool just visible by Thursday. It made fishing the river very difficult because of low flows, with most people concentrating on the Turn and the Quarry pools. Tuesday was a truly incredible day almost flat calm and clear blue skies. I personally had a group sea fishing with John Brittain out of Cleggan and the scenic picture below is actually of a sea stack and the cliffs on the west side of InisTurk. You could probably count on one hand the number of days in the year you could get that close to these cliffs. Air temperatures peaked at 22.9 degrees C with the water temperature rising to an amazing 21 degrees C.

 West side of Inis Turk
West side of Inis Turk

This however did not deter Patrick Hughes from Melbourne who managed to land his first ever salmon, a cracking 12lbs5oz fish from the Turn pool on a beaded nymph. Giovanni Mazzoleni from Florence also managed to wangle one out of the Turn pool of 6lbs11ozs also on a beaded nymph. We must spare a thought for Janet Till from Devon who was also seeking that elusive first ever, managed to hook numerous but didn’t manage to hold on, which was indeed a great pity.

Michael Fisher did manage to land a beautiful 2.8lbs approx. sea trout off Finlough. I must again give credit to all our anglers earlier in the week as they thoroughly enjoyed the social aspect of their holiday despite the terrible fishing conditions.

Delphi - July 2014 3Thursday night, Friday morning the rain finally came and the river albeit a bit coloured became fishable again. There was a fish lost in the Rock pool just before lunch and then in the afternoon Reinhard Mittmann managed to land a good fish of 6lbs14.5ozs off the Stream on Fin on a Delphi Collie. He landed the fish just in time see the Germany beat France in the World Cup.

Today the river was in lovely order with the water running at 28. There were quite a few fish seen and lost and as of this point in time we have landed two. Ash Mathews had the first, a sea liced 6lbs15oz fish off the Whin pool on a Sunrae Shadow. Pat Cassidy had the second, a picture perfect grilse of 4lbs6ozs taken in the Quarry Run on a Delphi Collie.

The river is still at 25, so hopefully we will get some showers or rain overnight to keep it at a fishable level for the next few days.

No catches from Owenea with water level low

Lindsey Clarke reports from OWENEA FISHERY – Monday 30th June to Sunday 6th July 2014.

Once again this week there was little in the way of rain. The river ran at very low summer levels for the greater part of the week. There was some rain at the weekend but this only managed to raise the river to 0.12m. The gauge average for the week read only 0.07 metres. Only 2 rods fished for the week on Thursday. I have no reports of any catch to date.

Some good Sonaghan on wet fly at Lough Melvin

Lindsey Clarke reports  from LOUGH MELVIN – Monday 30th June to Sunday 6th July 2014

Lough Melvin was still very low this week and it seems few grilse are running the river in the low water conditions. Salmon angling was quiet and there is little to report. However, the trout fishing was fairly good this week. A good few rods reported good fishing on wet fly for Sonaghan over the deep water. The deep water drifts out from Rossinver and all the way across to the Planting Shore produced good fishing.
