A month of mixed fortunes at Delphi

David McEvoy reports from Delphi:

Fishing this month basically reflected our weather patterns. We had twenty eight fish for the first two weeks and then eleven for the second two. All rainfall in June 85.2mms (3.35”) bar 13.2mms fell in the first thirteen days. After that we became Costa Del Delphi with air temperatures rising to 24.9 degrees C and water temperatures peaking at 19.7 degrees. This makes salmon angling a little bit difficult to say the least. However I must give credit to the people who were here in those difficult weeks as they thoroughly enjoyed themselves and appreciated Delphi and this part of Ireland for what it really is.

Week 23 we managed to land thirteen fish. Husband and wife pairing of Martin and Barbara Ceillier managed to land three of these. All up eleven anglers managed to land fish, which I must say was a very even spread. There were three firsts with Charles Finch (UK), Lukas Steinmann (Germany) and Anabelle Tomes (USA) managing to land their first ever salmon. Others who had a fish each were David Walmsley, Fred Eberle, Bill Middleton, David Rainford and Ian Carroll. Manfred Wolf had two including the fish of the week of approx. 13lbs off Finlough.

Week 24 we landed fifteen fish, the majority of which were Springers, some still fresh run fish. We had no firsts as we had a rather experienced bunch of anglers. Those to land salmon included Chris Cromey Hawke, Chris Dickinson, Mike and Mark Shortt, Jean Howman, David Hewetson Brown, Peter Joyce, Tom Callanan, Sean Moogan, David Duffy and the dynamic duo of John Mills and Alan Dunlop. Biggest fish of the week was David Duffy’s 10lbs fish off Finlough.

Week 25 was beautiful, but not particularly for fishing. We landed three fish with two people landing their first ever salmon. David Hartstein and Jeff Mouttet, both from the USA had sea liced fish from the Turn pool. Margaret Downes also managed to land a sea liced fish of 9lbs.

Considering the conditions the German party in week 26 did rather well, even though there was particular emphasis on the social aspect of the week, which I must say makes our job much easier. They managed to land eight fish with Benni Weltz having four, Martin Nolde two and Sean Dempsey two.

The river is now at minus 5, so fishing this week will be difficult. 39 fish for the month brings our total for the year to 121, which is not bad at all as fishing generally around the country has been slow. Hopefully with a drop of fresh water our Grilse will start running in numbers.

Shark fishing
Bending into a blue shark - small boat fishing for sharks has been producing some great results

The fine summer weather continued over the past week but low water conditions and hot conditions are impacting on angling in many of our inland fisheries around the country.  This weather is of course suiting sea anglers in particular and many anglers did venture out to sea after sharks and other varieties of fish.

Specimen pollack
Mark Gannon win Catch of the Week with a 12.5lb pollack

There was an improvement in salmon fishing reported at Blackwater Lodge where some rain helped anglers catch some nice fish from 8 to 11 lb. There were less anglers fishing on Lough Currane in the past week but those anglers who did venture out were rewarded with steady sea trout fishing and some grilse.  Frank Maunsell from the Owenmore Fishery in Dingle reported another good week for night fishing for sea trout on the river.  It was another great week on the Galway Weir Fishery where 86 salmon were recorded for the week with many on fly.  A few nice salmon were reported at Delphi despite the hot weather conditions. There were a few grilse reported in the low water conditions on the River Erriff but the sea trout fishing was superb with one French visitor recording 77 sea trout for the week which were all released.  The low water conditions did not help anglers catch salmon on the River Moy but nonetheless 250 salmon were recorded from the many fisheries all along the river.  It was another good week at Ballisodare where the big run of grilse is providing great sport but the best catch was a 4 lb. sea trout for a French Visitor.  Low water conditions did hamper good salmon fishing on the River Drowes in Co. Donegal but nonetheless fair numbers of grilse were taken on most days.

At sea, there were reports of some fine bass captured along the Co. Louth coast in the past week up to 8.5 lb. Angling guide Jason O’Riordan brought clients out night fishing for bass and they were very successful using soft plastics.  Anglers fishing from the Bellavista angling centre in Cobh enjoyed some excellent blue shark fishing in the past week.  Charter skipper Mark Gannon caught a fine specimen pollack of 12.5 lb. which is our Catch of the Week and anglers fishing with him deep sea fishing enjoyed some good conger fishing and blue shark with some of them measuring up to 2.20 metre (circa 100 lb.).  All sharks were tagged and released.  Anglers fishing with charter skipper Siegy Grabher off Valencia Island enjoyed some very good deep sea fishing with some cracking Ling to 21 lb. recorded.  Angler’s deep sea fishing with charter skipper Donal Kennedy out from Killala caught a great range of species including ling, pollack, coalfish and cuckoo wrasse.  At Rosses Point, there was an unusual catch of a garfish reported from an angler fishing from a small boat.  54 anglers from around the country fished the master boat competition at Mullaghmore at the weekend and Tony Santry from Cork was the winner and will captain the Irish International team in 2015 at the World Championships.

On the coarse angling trail, there were some nice catches reported from the fourth round of the Ballybay summer league held at Baird’s Shore where Liam O’Brien was the winner on the day.   A great day out on the Grand Canal near Edenderry was enjoyed by a party of young anglers who caught some nice roach and skimmers while being coached by some senior anglers.  Some nice bream featured in daily catches between 30 and 60 lb. recorded on the River Shannon at the Salmon Run above Portumna for English visiting anglers.  Alan Fitzjohn from Lancashire enjoyed some nice fishing with Kevin Lyons from Melview Lodge catching some nice tench and roach.  A group of special anglers got some expert help in catching some nice fish in a lough at Killeshandra.   70 anglers took part in the Breffni Challenge fishing waters in the Arva area over five days and despite the hot weather conditions, Keith Greensmith from UK won with 58.590 Kgs. of bream, roach and hybrids.

Emy and District Fly Fishing Club ran a youth angling program on fly fishing for junior anglers from both sides of the border in an EU sponsored initiative.  The hot and still weather conditions certainly deterred many anglers to fish on Lough Sheelin but a few did catch some nice trout on sedges in the late evenings.  Down on the River Maigue in Co. Limerick an American family enjoyed some trout fishing with angling guide Paddy Dunworth.  Small dry flies were the order of the day for the few anglers who ventured out on Lough Corrib and some nice catches of trout were reported.  There were few anglers out fishing on Loughs Conn and Cullin but small dry flies worked for the few who did to good effect.

Angling guide Paul Bourke is using deep trolling and jerk baits methods for his clients who continue to catch some good pike on Lough Derg.  Visiting father and son from Boston fished with angling guide Kenny Sloan last week and they caught some lovely pike on several waters near Foxford in Co. Mayo on lures.

Sadly it has not been a good summer for people drowning and a few of these were anglers.  Please wear a life jacket at all times when you go afloat whether you are fishing on an inland lough or at sea.  Enjoy the great fishing Ireland has to offer safely,

Tight lines especially in Ireland,

Paul Bourke

Maigue a good river for beginners even in low water and bright conditions

Paddy Dunworth of Celtic Angling was fishing with Sinnott family from Seattle, USA, at the weekend. The Synotts are on a first-time visit to Ireland and have packed there holiday with activity and adventure. They had already experienced Archery and a Falcon walk before Paddy took them for a few hours fishing on Sunday afternoon. None had ever held a fishing rod before, never mind a fly-rod. Like most rivers the Maigue is very low right now and the day was bright and warm, not ideal for fishing.

Conor outfish dad, JB, who despite hooking 4 or 5 trout never landed anything

The stretch below the bridge at Adare however is ideal for introducing folk to flyfishing, fastish runs, open skies and lots of co-operative wee brownies, not to mention the old bridge and castle which make for a nice backdrop. The Sinnotts handled the conditions admirably and were very enthusiastic, there’s lots of fishing back home near Seattle and their primary objective was to see what flyfishing was all about. Mom Laura had a couple of fish, one of 1/2lb, son Connor had two also, whilst dad JB had 4/5 takes which all came off!

Steady sea trout fishing reported from Lough Currane in the heatwave.

Ian McMullan with a fine sea trout from Lough Currane.

Ghillie Vincent Appleby reports on the salmon and sea trout fishing in the past week on Lough Currane from his blog at http://wwwsalmonandseatroutphotos.blogspot.com/

25/6/14 Lough Currane was on the quiet side after yesterday’s action even though there were a few sea trout caught but nothing that would hit the news headlines. Wind was light SW and variable and overcast.

26/6/14 Its Mr. Phil Staniforth of the UK and Waterville and his ghillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com that take all the headlines in the fly department, with 7 Grilse and four were returned and not satisfied with that, they topped that with 9 Sea Trout, which were also returned. Dominic reported that the wind was in the East, and as luck would have it they were the only ones to record a feast.

27/6/14 Mr. Martin Burn of Dublin, caught his first 1½ lbs. sea trout on the fly today, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com and may it be the first of many. Staying with the sea trout, Mr. Phil Staniforth of the UK, fishing with his ghillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught a 3 lb. sea trout on the fly, which he sportingly put back to fight another day. On the weather front, flat calm for the most of the day with heavy showers.

28/6/14 Bright sunshine and flat calm conditions were the order of the day as my Noble fly Anglers waited for wind, as the iron men trolled by, grinning as they went past the redundant fly anglers, but in the end it was my Noble Game fish that had the last laugh on the day shift.

29/6/14 Straight to the backdate department, in the past week, Local ghillie Mr. Roger Baker of www.cloghvoola.com caught a fine grilse on the troll and a sea trout on the drift. Now back to today’s action. Mr. Antony Avogadri caught a fine grilse on the troll, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com Wind W light to calm and sunny.

30/6/14 Lough Currane was the quiet side on the last day of June, with one sea trout of 1 ½ lb. caught and released by Mr. Ian McMullan on the drift, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com Now we cut across to the Southside to www.lakelandshouse.com fly department, Joep from Holland caught 2 sea trout ranging in the 1 ½ lb. class, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com Wind SE fresh with reasonable cloud cover. Now to Frank’s backdate department, on Saturday 28th of June Mr. Michael Heery of Dublin while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Frank Donnelly, caught 3 sea trout, all in the 1 ½ lb. class.

1/7/14 Straight to the sea trout department, Mr. James Merrit from the UK caught a sea trout on the drift, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com Wind was light to calm and from all directions. Bright and sunny and very warm all day.

Rain should improve prospects at Kylemore

Trying for a salmon at the bottom of the fishery

Nigel Rush reports that over the past five weeks the Kylemore Abbey Fishery has had about three days that were worth fishing as low water was an ongoing problem…

The total catch for the season to the end of June is some 26 fish behind that of 2013 same period total. Water levels dropped to just 9 inches. The minimum required for angling on our gauge would be 18 inches and even at that, some parts of the river would require more water. The level is so low that water is only running through the center cut of the Derryinver weir with both walls as dry as a bone.

Trying for a salmon at the bottom of the fishery
Trying for a salmon at the bottom of the fishery

As I write rain is starting to appear and more persistent rain is forecast for the weekend. The water initially will be very dirty due to amounts of algae building up on the river bed and hopefully late Saturday should see conditions improve and with a backlog of fish waiting to enter we should have a good week ahead providing conditions remain favourable for anglers.
For bookings contact me at 095 41178 in the mornings or 087 9580702 after 10.am in the morning.

Hidden away between the mountains of Connemara and the Atlantic ocean, the Kylemore Abbey fishery is a wild and beautiful place. Kylemore Abbey Fishery consists of the Kylemore Middle and Castle lakes, with five and a half miles of the Dawros river which enters the sea in Ballynakill bay.  Salmon and sea-trout run for a good proportion of the year to provide first class fishing on uncrowded waters.

The open panoramas of the lakes contrast with the intimacy of the river to give a variety of fishing combined with stunning scenery unrivalled anywhere in Ireland. Although offering an excellent chance of a fish for most of the season, you will find the real meaning of “a fish is a bonus” at Kylemore.

Exciting night fishing for sea trout at Owenmore Fishery

Frank Maunsell reports on the conditions and prospects on the Owenmore Fishery in Co. Kerry…

The night fishing has been very exciting for the last week even though the water levels are low the fish that came up in the last small flood are providing great sport. Rain forecast for Thursday and Friday and hopefully we will get a bigger flood than the last one. The wind has finally gone around to the south west which is always good for the system. The boats on both lakes will be active over the next few days.

Young anglers enjoy their day out on the Grand Canal at Rogerstown

Juniors showing their catch

An introduction to hemp on the Grand Canal for Irish Youth Angling Club

Juniors showing their catch
Juniors showing their catch

Angling juniors enjoyed a day of fishing, coaching and some cooking instruction on the Grand Canal at Rogerstown, near Edenderry at the weekend.

The theme of the day was fishing with hemp, the juniors were taught how to make a rig, prepare the bait and fish with it!  It was a great success with everyone catching on the seed.

Juniors showing their catch
Juniors showing their catch

Some competitive angling followed with the juniors allocated pegs with names such as ‘Roach Retreat’, ‘Bream B&B’ and ‘Eel Town’ helping with awareness of the species in the canal. Top angler on the day was Niall O’Beirne with 3 lb 9 oz, followed by our young lady angler Ciara McEvilly with 1 lb 2 oz. In third place came Killian McEvilly with 1 lb, fourth was Joseph with 15 oz and finally keeping it in the family was Liam McEvilly with 8 oz.
