A few fresh seatrout and grilse run the Laune despite very low water

sea ttout

Billy Downes reports that as of Saturday 5th July the water fallen back to 6 inches on the gauge at Johnston’s and the Laune is need of some good rain. Anglers locally are of the opinion that salmon ‘lie doggo’ when the water is too warm. Water temperatures have reached into the 20’s during late June.

A few sea trout and grilse are still being caught despite the low levels

Only a few weeks ago we were saying that the fishing was bad because of low temperatures . My own view is that salmon are scarce in the system and will remain so till we get some good rain with the nets off.

Prospects: It can only get better – even allowing for the draft nets being in operation,  the return to anglers for this past week was not great.

A few more salmon for Blackwater Lodge following rain

salmon
Alan Andrews - 9.8lb.  Taken on fly at the Wall Pool on Ballinaroone.

Michael Murray had been fishing with us a couple of times already this season searching for his First Ever Salmon. On July 1st. he succeeded – landing a sparkling grilse on spinner on Ballinaroone in challenging conditions. He was fishing with his son Nathan who then proceeded to catch his First Ever Salmon as well. Michael then went on to catch a second salmon later that day just to prove that it was no fluke. Well done both!

The following day Alan Andrews caught this fine 9.8lb salmon also at Ballinaroone. Two grilse including Raymond Tanghe (Belgium) first ever salmon were caught on 03 July. On July 4, one 5lb grilse was caught on fly and released by Carsten Nylander (Denmark) and on Saturday we had another First Ever Salmon for Richard Toulmin (UK) with a 5lb. grilse, also released.

Great bream fishing at Lough Derry for Meathhill anglers

bream
One of the biggest bream caught over the two nights

The Meathhill Angling Club members have some fine fishing recently at Lough Derry where really good bream to over 7lb were taken during a couple of night sessions reports Garrett O’Reilly…

We had heard reports of good bream coming off Lough Derry so  John, Larry and I decided to spend a couple of days targeting them last week and Jock joined us on the second night just as the two other lads called it a day.

A nice bream

On the first night all of us caught a few tench and some good bream to over 7 lb. We all lost a few good fish as well with myself doing battle with one very big bream for quite some time. But it  dragged me into the lillies in the end and escaped the hook. I can only guess how big she really was!

bream
A great brace of bream

Best bait seemed to be corn, although a with a few of my fish were caught on 10 mm halibut pellet. Corn accounted for most of the fish overall  and all my fish were caught very close at only about 2 rod lengths out on the waggler in about 12 ft of water.

‘Irish Times’ anglers gain rare sighting of a school of sunfish, Irish Times

CLIMATE change was much in evidence last weekend as five sunfish (yes five) came within six metres of our boat while fishing out from Cobh in Co Cork. Donal Geary, skipper of John Boy, said: “In all of my 40 years of fishing these waters I have never seen such a spectacle.” The closely-knit school of five meandered past flapping and splashing, enjoying the dense heat and sunshine that prevailed throughout the day. Sadly their gala appearance did not last long as the drone of the engine sent them down and out of sight…

Patience and Perseverance are the Keys to Success

John Rix from the UK With A Well Conditioned Bass

Although the weather has been quite changeable lately, there have been several windows of opportunity to catch a few bass when weather conditions and other variables have aligned. The fish have not been giving themselves up though and patience and perseverance have been the keys to success. On recent outings some anglers have has bass to 10lbs on fly and lures have also produced a number of fish. Jim Hendrick, his brother William and John Rix from the UK have been out and about lately and have had a number of  fish to all methods. Some of the better fish have been on the fly.

Pike on the Fly for French Anglers in Carrickmacross

The Bend on the Rod is Not the Bottom

David Gauduchon from De la Plume Voyages in France visited Carrickmacross recently with a group of fly anglers. Guided by Peadar O’Brien and Tom Cogan in ideal conditions the group hooked lots of pike, all on the fly but many of them managed to shake the hooks before being netted. The best pike of the session was circa 9kg and gave a real good account of himself. The group were delighted with the day, would have liked to boat a few more fish but got a good flavour of what Irish pike fishing is about.

French Anglers Have Some Nice Brown Trout Fishing on the River Boyne

A Beautifully Marked Wold Brown Trout is Released Back to the River

A group of French group visited the north east recently to do some trout fishing on the River Boyne with fishing guide Peter Cunningham from Drogheda. The group visited the lower Boyne at Rossnaree and fished with Peter who also assisted them with organizing their fishing on some of their other days.

Fishing was very tough and not a lot of flies were hatching during the day. Some mayfly was still hatching during the day and a few sedge’s were evident during the evening. David Gauduchon described the fishing as quite technical and overcame the difficult conditions by scaling down to a size 20 with a very fine tippet on a tapered leader. Despite the challenging conditions some nice fish were taken in absolutely stunning surroundings.

Pike A Plenty for Portadown Pikers With Peadar

One of the Better Fish Taken by the Portadown Pike Anglers

Angling guide Peadar O’Brien from Carrickmacross reports that Ian, Ray, Stephen and Glen from the Portadown pikers visited recently to fish with himself and Tom Cogan. The weather was very changeable but we had pike to 20lb. The lads had loads of fish and recorded fish of 10lbs and 13lb on lures. Peadar says that “we lost some more big pike they were coming up and hitting the lures but they would just not hold on, we really lost  a lot more fish but we also boated a good number as well.

Surface action produces pristine conditioned bass

Wexford guide Gerard Doran tells us:

As you gaze patiently at your lure popping, walking or skimming the waters surface excitement and confidence builds with each and every cast, seeing a bass following a lure often attempting to grab the lure several times before attacking the lure with full force then stripping braid off your reel at speed is quite an exciting spectacle to say the least.

Gerard Doran - Billy with Bass (2)Myself and Billy fished using nothing only surface lures on a few occasions this week producing fish in pristine condition to about 6lbs weight. Lures such as Heddon Super Spook, Yo-Zuri Mag Poppers and Lucky Craft Gunfish were attacked just meters from the shoreline.

Gerard Doran - Billy with BassAll fish were returned with care after some quick photos. Looking after the bass fishery in Ireland is of great importance and we can all play our part in helping stocks into the future.
