The Munster Blackwater’s Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery reported on 15/06 that fish have been moving in reasonable quantities on the upstream beats with two caught and returned last week, both on spinner and in less than ideal conditions. Another weighing 7lb. was caught on a Cascade fly.

The Ballyduff Bridge fishing beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. The fishery caters for beginners and experienced anglers alike; it has something to offer every angler – exceptionally good fly runs, very good spinning areas and some deep pools for occasional bait fishing.

15 salmon at Delphi last week despite hard sunshine and midges

salmon
Delphi salmon

David McEvoy reflects that at Delphi they as they approach the longest day of the year and temperatures are beginning to creep up, if the fishing slows down at least the scenery will always be magnificent…

We had a relatively good week with fifteen fish landed, despite some difficult conditions and the midges making their mark.

First on the score sheet last Sunday was Chris Dickinson who landed a lovely sea liced fish of 9lbs11.5ozs off the Whin pool on a Sunrae Shadow.

Monday we drew a blank and on Tuesday the old Maestro himself John Mills was on the mark again with a sea liced fish of 7lbs6ozs off the Turn pool on a Delphi Collie.

On Wednesday Mike Shortt saved the day with a sea liced fish of 5lbs on a Corps nymph from the Turn pool.

Thursday was a bit of a deluge as regards fish as we landed seven. Chris Dickinson had his second of the week, a fish of 7lbs13ozs off Fin on a Sunrae Shadow. The dynamic duo of John Mills and Alan Dunlop had one each off Finlough, of 8lbs11ozs and 8lbs3ozs on a Collie Dog and a Willie Gunn respectively. David Hewetson Brown had a sea liced fish of 6lbs3ozs from the Rock pool on a Willie Gunn. Jean Howman had one from the Deadman’s of 4lbs on a Teal Blue and Silver. Not to be outdone by his brother Mark Shortt had a fish from the Stream on Fin of 6lbs on an Allie Shrimp. Finally Chris Cromey Hawke also had a fish from the Stream on Fin of approx. 5lbs on a Delphi Collie.

Friday Mark Shortt got one up on his brother Mike when he landed his second fish of the week, a 4lbs8oz fish from the Quarry pool on an Allie Shrimp.

So far today (14/06) we have had four fish. Peter Joyce had one from the Rock pool of 3lbs4ozs on a Red Shrimp. The Westport trio of Sean Moogan, Tom Callanan and David Duffy managed three in a boat off Finlough of 8lbs6ozs, 9lbs4ozs and 10lbs on a Cascade, a Conehead Flamethrower and a Willie Gunn respectively.

This afternoon the sun has broken through and temperatures have risen dramatically, so our new group of anglers this week will have to pull out all the stops if the weather forecast is proven correct.

Some more double figure salmon were reported on the Laune writes Billy Downes…

As of Tuesday 17th the Laune was at a nice 1.75 feet on the gauge at Johnston’s and running clear.  There have been some good fish landed over the last few days.  Chief amongst these were three 14 pounders that I heard of.  One was caught at Johnstons on Saturday by Martina Murphy, her first salmon ever.

On Monday another Tralee angler landed another 14 pounder at Johnstons on the worm.  On Tuesday evening (17/06/) Mike Crowley returned a beautiful 14 pounder caught on the fly at the Rock Pool.  No soccer for Mike.

There were a few other ordinary fish landed also.  This writer lost a lovely 10 poinder at the Strand at Johnstion’s last Thursday on the fly.

Prospects

Good improvement in prospects now with fish being regularly reported and memorable fish among them.  Conditions continue be good after last weeks good water.

Angling Guide and guesthouse owner Kevin Lyons reports on a parties of anglers from the UK who fished on waters near Melview Lodge in Longford

Howard and Nigel with a fine couple of Bream
Howard and Nigel with a fine couple of Bream

Nigel and Howard from Torquay were over once again for their annual fishing trip to Ireland, they are no strangers to fishing Ireland and for a number of years now have used Melview Lodge in Longford as their base. Regular prebaiting paid off for them at the two venues they decided to fish, mainly feeder fishing at 30 yards into over twenty foot of water.

Their best joint weight at the first venue was 186 lb. of Bream to 7 lb. along with some Hybrids, Kevin said the lads always work hard and prebait according to the venue and weather conditions and it all paid of for them.

Lightning fast Killarney trout lets Stuart Marry fulfill his dream

Mr Stuart Marry with the ITFFA National Championship Trophy
Mr Stuart Marry with the ITFFA National Championship Trophy

Joe Kenna of  Irish Trout Fly Fishing Associations reports:

“Married to Victoria”

Balbriggan angler Stuart Marry realised a boyhood dream when he won the National Challenge Trophy at the Irish Trout Fly Fishing Associations National Angling Championship. Stuart, who has been trying for over twenty years to represent his country, won this prestigious trophy with eight beautiful trout for 1.733 kg. This competition took place on Saturday 14th June 2014 and although fishing conditions were extremely difficult with long periods of blinding sunshine, temperatures in the mid-twenties, and little or no wind, Lough Lein provided nonstop action from start to finish.

Mr Stuart Marry with the ITFFA National Championship Trophy

These tough angling conditions demanded great skill and stamina from the 126 anglers who departed from Ross Castle at 10.00 am to face the eight hour challenge that lay ahead. Stuart and his boat partner Tony Hogg were taken to the Victoria area of the lake by experienced Killarney boatman, Benny O’Dea. “You’re in the best part of the lake” said Benny, as wished the guys the very best of luck while they carefully prepared a cast of nymph patterns. It wasn’t too long before the guys got their first taste of these lightning fast Killarney trout which fell to the tried and trusted Diawl Bach. Stuart was in luck, the trout really liked what was on the menu as time after time they locked on and refused to let go of his personally tailored nymph pattern.

As 6 pm approached the guys departed for the shoreline and Stuart contemplated whether or not his eight trout would be enough to secure him that long awaited Irish Team Blazer. He was however reliably assured by Tony and Benny that he could put his mortgage on it. Tony and Benny were to be proven right as anglers required at least three good trout to qualify. Other successful anglers who qualified to represent Ireland in 2015 include Mike Keady (Galway), Thomas O’Loughlin (Clare), Andy Duncan (Westmeath), Martin McGorian (Dublin), Francis McSharry (Leitrim), Joe Quinn (Mayo), Simon Yorke (Westmeath), Paul Burke (Tipperary) and Stephen Ellis (Fermanagh). These anglers will represent Ireland at the 2015 International Fly Fishing Association (IFFA) International Match. We wish these anglers the very best of luck as they prepare to represent their country.

ITFFA President, Mr Gerry Fox with ITFFA Secretary, Mr Michael Callaghan

These beautiful Lein trout will test the skill of the most discerning angler. To be successful on Lough Lein the angler must fish small flies on light tackle and have lightning fast reflexes. These trout are very handsome indeed and pound for pound they put up a great scrap. Lough Lein will provide excellent sedge fishing until October and you can also go hunting for those deep water daphnia feeders. Angling on Lough Lein is an experience not to be missed, the scenery is absolutely breath taking, and you will cherish the experience forever.
ITFFA would like to thank Killarney Anglers, the ITFFA Munster Committee and Killarney National Parks Authority who made this competition a great success. If you are contemplating a visit to Killarney don’t leave without paying a visit to Lough Lein. Boat hire is available locally and be assured, you will receive a welcome that is synonymous with this beautiful place.

German anglers enjoy some great pike fishing on Lough Gowna

Peter with the biggest pike of the holiday, a lovely 100 cm fish

German anglers Peter and Michaela from Munich enjoyed a great fishing holiday on Lough Gowna recently. The pair stayed at Enaghan Self Catering and were assisted really perfectly by the owners Suzanne and Brendan Reilly.

Lough Gowna  turned out to have quite a lot of hot spots for rather big pike – although the pair were not as lucky as they were last year. Having said that they were more than please with the fishing and during their10-days stay, the anglers caught 9 pike over 80 cm of length, 2 over 90 cm and one 100cm-pike.

During the first days of the holiday the weather was Irish with ice-cold rain showers, but fishing was good. Later the weather turned better and fishing still was good which was a a real plus!

Located near the Longford border and just south of its neighbouring centre of Arvagh, Gowna is a very attractive crossroads village and was the 2007 winner in the county in Ireland’s Tidiest Town competition. It has long been associated with angling tourism and is a good base from which to explore the complex waters of Lough Gowna, the principal pike fishing water in the upper reaches of the Erne system. The lake covers approximately 1,178 hectares. It is fed by the River Erne which rises 20km upstream of the lake entering and exiting that part of L. Gowna known as Lisanny and Derries on the eastern shores of the Lough. There are good stocks of pike in this lake system and excellent stocks of fodder fish. Pike up to 30 lbs. (13.60 kg.) are recorded annually at this venue.

Reverse

22 lb. specimen salmon is highlight of a good week on Lough Currane where some good catches of sea trout were reported.

Ghillie Vincent Appleby reports on the salmon and sea trout fishing in the past week on Lough Currane from his blog at http://wwwsalmonandseatroutphotos.blogspot.com/

9/6/14 There was some great action in the fly department, Mr. Peter Liddel and Mr. Alex Muir and their ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com take all the honours in the salmon fly department, they caught four salmon, their weights are as follows, 4 lb., 5 lbs., 7 lb., 10 lb. and capped that with a Sea Trout of 2 lb. Now we cut across to the south side and the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Mr. William Hamilton caught 3 sea trout all in the 2 lbs. class. Wind S light to fresh with good cloud cover.

10/6/14 Lough Currane was the quiet side after yesterday’s action in the fly department, and for good reason, there was no wind until the afternoon, eventually the wind came from the west fresh, and the only angler to report a bit of action was Mr. Liam Ellis of Waterville, who caught a fine 2 lb. sea trout on the drift.

11/6/14 The sea trout results are as fallows In the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com  Mr. William Hamilton caught one sea trout on the fly in the 3 lb. class and staying in the sea trout department, Mr. Liam Ellis of Waterville also caught a fine sea trout in the 3 lb. class.  Where salmon anglers are concerned, no comment. Wind SW light with reasonable cloud cover.

Mr Jo Jo Daly with his fine specimen salmon of 22 lb.

12/6/14 Lough Currane went up and down with an almighty explosion in the trolling department today, and for good reason, Mr. Jo Jo Daly of Abbeydorney, Tralee, caught a cracker of a Salmon in the 22 lb. class. His ghillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com  was telling me that he took like a Grilse, but once my Noble Gentlemen, saw the boat there was one hell of an explosion and the battle was on, at one point they had to chase the fish because of the fear of running out of line, all I can say is, it wasn’t long before my Noble Salmon was running out of strength and that includes my Noble Captor.  Now to Frank’s Hired out Boat department.  Fran, caught 2 sea trout on the drift, ranging from 1 ½ lb. up to 2 lb. and yesterday 11/6/14 he caught and released a sea trout in the 5 lb. class. Staying with Franks hired out boat Department, Mr. Phil McCarthy and Joe Cahill caught two sea trout ranging from 1 ½ lbs up to 2 ½ lb. all caught on the fly. Now we cut across the lake to calmer waters, on the North side, Mr. Tony Church, caught a fine 3 lb. sea trout, on the drift. Now head up the shoreline to Waterville Boats and at [email protected]  German angler, Mr. Paul Dieter caught a fine 10 ½ lb. salmon on the drift, late this evening. Wind SW light to fresh and sunny all day. Now for quote of the day from Mr. Jo Jo Daly, I can tell you one thing I was told that Frankie is the best ghillie on the Waterville system and now I can see why.

13/6/14  Straight to an apology and backdate department, and all fishing in the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com to Mr. William Hamilton for not reporting his fine C&R 8 lb. salmon yesterday, and to, Mr. Steve Cloake for not reporting his fine 5 ½ lb. sea trout, again sportingly put back. Just for the record if I miss your catches don’t hesitate to text on 353 (0) 872074882 Now today’s action, Mr. JoJo Daly was in good form again in the Salmon department, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.Lakelandshouse.com caught a fine 4 ½ lb. grilse on the fly. Well JoJo at least your catching Salmon on a Daly bases, fair play to you. In Franks hired out boat department Mr. Steve Cloake caught and released a fine sea trout in the 3 lbs Class. Now we cut across to the North Side, Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com  reported to me that in his hired out boat department, Mr. Kevin Edwards, in the past two days has caught 6 Sea Trout on the drift, ranging in the 2 ½ lbs class. In the backdate department Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville Boats and at [email protected]   reports that last week Mr. Andy Wishart and Mr. Gavin Wishart caught 4 sea trout ranging from 2 ½ up to 3 ½ lb. Today’s weather overcast with a light NW wind.

14/6/14 Mr. Keith Nickland fishing out of the Butler Arms Hotel and at www.butlerarms.com with his ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea and at www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught a fine 4 ½ lb. grilse on the troll, also in good form fishing out of the Bungalow, was Mr. Sean Brick of Tralee, who caught a fine 4 lb. sea trout on the drift. Staying at the Bungalow, Mr. Angus Sutherland, caught a fine 2 ½ lb. sea trout on the drift, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com  There were a few boats out there manipulating their flies and I am sure they all didn’t draw a blank and if they did, they failed miserably in their duties in procuring the odd Salmon or sea trout and if you did you certainly failed in the reporting department. Wind WNW light to fresh with bright sunshine all day.

15/6/14 Lough Currane was on the Blazing Saddles side, but at least one angler came up trumps in the C&R sea Trout department and that was Mr. Enrico Fantasia of Dublin, who caught a fine 2 lbs Sea Trout on the drift, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Ton O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com Wind was all over the place and light.

16/6/14 Again my Noble Anglers had blazing sunshine and flat calm conditions this morning but this didn’t deter a few boats from venturing out and one or two Anglers are glad they did. Come lunch time there was a light SW wind, that is when there was a bit of action, first in the striking zone was Irish American, Mr. Peter McGrath of Milwaukee USA while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville Boats and at [email protected] caught a fine 8 lb. salmon on the troll and finished their day off with a nice Sea Trout of 2 ½ lb. caught on the fly. Just for the record this was Peter’s first time fishing on Lough Currane, may it be the first of many visits. Now we cut across the lake to the south side and the hired out boat department of www.Lakelandshouse.com Mr. Michael Heery, while fly fishing, caught 6 sea trout up to 3 ¾ lb.
