SUPER PIKE. The Midland Lakes are producing some super pike these days, and anglers are catching some huge double figure pike. Local angling Guide Barry Darby was on Ree last week and had some super pike. Lough Derravaragh is also producing good double figure pike, and we are back at the pike this week. I hope to have some action shots of pike taking the bait next week. One of the top lures working at the moment is the Belly Dancer. Drop into Brian Conlon of Anglers World and check the Belly Dancer

Danny Martin, Wigan wins the annual Edenderry Festival on the Grand Canal in a keenly contested event.

56 anglers fished the annual Edenderry Festival on the Grand Canal near the town with sections at Killeen, Toberdaly and Rhode. The fish were spawning several days just before the festival started but good canal weights of roach, bream, hybrids and occasional tench were taken at all sections.  Right up to the final day, the competition was very close and Stanley Martin Wigan narrowly beat Pat Bartley from Dublin by 1 lb. 4 oz to win the overall festival and €1700 plus pools money.  The top six anglers were:

1st  Danny Martin,  Wigan, UK     33 lb. 13 oz.

Another Great Event as Fishmaniak Club Members Land 58 Pike at Weekend Competition

Members of the Fishmaniak Fishing Club at Their Competition Last Weekend

Pawel Orlow reports that the Fishmaniak pike boat competition was held last weekend (8th June’14) on River Erne in Belturbet. The competition started at 8.30am, following a meeting and short briefing during which each team got a club measuring tape and instructions. The event was very successful even though the weather was not that great. During the competition there were heavy rain showers and thunder and lightning. Despite this lots of fish were landed and many more missed and lost.

A total of 17 enthusiastic contestants took part in the event on this venue and managed to catch 58 pike all together.

After the event we had a barbecue and the prize-giving.

The Results of the Competition are as follows:

1st place – Henryk Walkowiak – 11 pike

2nd place – Janis – 4 pike

Great sport on the Graveyard stretch of Innisicarra reservoir

Gerard Coyne reports from Inniscarra:

Some great sport on the Graveyard stretch of Innisicarra reservoir. My prebaited swim produced an estimated 120 lb catch of mainly hybrids and Bream up to 3lb falling to groundbait feeder and hook baited with caster and worm.

A thank you to the local landowner – Henry for allowing us to pitch a tent on his land and make this catch possible, but just a gripe against some previous visitors to the stretch we filled a large box of discarded line, beer cans and and empty groundbait bags (none of which were ours) from the stretch before leaving and disposed of it home. The local landowner was very kind to let us utilise his land however if anglers continue to leave their rubbish behind it would be understandable if they denied access – please leave the banks as you found them.

Sunshine and downpours didn't dampen the spirits of our multinational anglers on the Suir

Andrew Ryan of Clonanav Fly Fishing’s  reports:
The last week has given us a bit of a mixed bag of fishing. The weather has been very unsettled with a mix of warm sunshine and really heavy thunder showers. Anglers from Germany, France, Holland, UK and USA have had some good fishing but it has been difficult.  The water levels have been fluctuating quite a bit with sometimes high water due to really heavy showers.
Clonanav - Suir fishing 1Clonanav - Suir fishing 2However we did manage some really good fishing for clients this week.  With Jim Brady from the US having an amazing day with his guide.  Ben and Paul from the Uk also had a great day – their first on the river!  Paul Moinester also had some nice fishing and tried to hook one of the largest brown trout he had ever seen!
Clonanav - Suir fishing 3Clonanav - Suir fishing 4The river Suir is still a little high and the dry fly and evening fishing has not taken off yet. I expect that we should have much better evening fishing and hatches in the coming weeks.  Last year the best of the evening fishing was in July and August with warm days leading to huge hatches.
Salmon are also starting to move.  It has been a very slow start to the Salmon season on the Suir with very few fish being landed so far, however reports from along the river are very promising the last few days with more fish being landed and seen.

Pre-baited swims yield good results in Portumna

Mike Murray of Murray’s Angling Services reports on the coarse fishing around Portumna:

Fishing in and around Portumna has continued to improve. Plenty of Bream and Hybrids showing with Rodgers Island and town stretches producing good weights. Pre baiting giving the best results. Bites are very shy so it is important to strike at the slightest movement of the rod tip when feeder fishing.

Keith Harvey and his 79 year old uncle Charlie from Birmingham had been fishing for a few days in the Killaloe area with poor results. They contacted me to try and put them onto the Bream. I pre- baited one of my favourite swims upstream of Portumna and they steadily caught each day for 4 days. Their final day produced 90lb + of fish. They were both delighted with the fishing and will be returning next year.

NATURE Lough, stock and fish in a barrel – Mayo News

Mayo News - BRIGHT FUTURE Stocks of trout are increasing in Lough Mask, boding well for the future of angling tourism.
Mayo News - BRIGHT FUTURE Stocks of trout are increasing in Lough Mask, boding well for the future of angling tourism.

When the telephone rang and woke me from my Sunday afternoon siesta the last thing I was expecting was an invitation to join in a soccer game. The lads were a man short; would I care to make up the numbers?
I looked out through the window to see fleecy clouds drifting slowly across a bright sky, travelling east on a westerly breeze. I thought of Carra, of Otter Point and the easy drift over deep water to the Twin Islands, where trout would be feeding high in the water…
It was no easy decision, but I dug out my boots, found my old football shirt and, if I say so myself, stood up to the game pretty well, even giving a good account of myself among a rabble less than half my age. Well, that’s how I saw it anyway.

An attractive feast for Sheelin's trout

Damien Willis of loughfishingbuddies.com  studies the form on Lough Sheelin and reports:
Excellent spent gnat fishing is still to be had on Lough Sheelin. A good number of trout can been observed feeding on spent gnat late in the evening in calm slick conditions. The bright conditions this week coupled with the large amount of boats traveling on the Lough did tend to put the majority of fish down, only to appear again at dusk. A good angling ethic is advised for this time of the year as big Sheelin trout will only rise and feed if there is little disturbance on the water – extra caution is advised not to spook the trout. The may fly on Sheelin had been early compared to recent years and as the season draws to a close perch fry will begin to make their appearance around mid June and become an important food item on a trout’s menu. Sheelin trout can appear to feed exclusively on the shoals of small fry and the anglers attention is generally attracted to the scene of the action by a succession of noisy splashes. Bashing trout lash the fry with their tails in an apparent effort to stun the tiny fish. They then feed on the dead fry lying on the surface.

Spent gnat

Although May Fly is still present on Sheelin trout will often ignore them and feed on surface Sedges late in the day and into the evening. The first stage of the sedges life is the larva where it builds itself a protective case from lake or riverbed debris. It stays in this form for up to a year, before gradually changing into the pupae stage. Once mature, the pupa eats its way out of its protective case before swimming to the surface. The final stage is the adult sedge. Its main characteristics are its tent-shaped wings and long antennae. Although some species are active during the day time, most sedges hatch during the evening and at night time. Its when the adults return to the water to lay their eggs, often skittering across the water’s surface, that some truly heart stopping angling can be enjoyed.
