Peter Doherty of Clane Anglers had a fabulous win at the 2014 Irish Trout Fly Fishing Associations (ITFFA) National Rivers Championship when he accumulated four placings and 1,678 points. The 2014 match was held was at the River Liffey, near Newbridge, on 7th June, and was hosted by North Kildare Trout and Salmon Angling Association.

Five entrants from each province competed in this event from which the five anglers and one reserve were selected to represent Ireland at the 2015 International Match. I spent the day stewarding for veteran Cork angler, Patsy Cotter, who caught some lovely trout. Patsy spent sessions one and two on beat C2 and I had to admire Patsy’s stamina as he tried varying his angling technique having drawn a blank on his first session. Session two was to prove a little more productive with three trout but Patsy really could have done with those two good fish that threw the hook in session one. Dry and dropper appeared to be the order of the day for Patsy having found it difficult to crack these Liffey trout with the beads. Patsy spent the afternoon on beat E3, but his luck was all out as fish after fish came short and managed to quickly shake the hook. He did however manage to net one keeper in session three and two more in session four but it just wasn’t enough to secure him the coveted Irish green blazer. Well I have to commend Patsy who is a true sportsman having responded with “I had a great days fishing on a lovely river and I thoroughly enjoyed myself”. I look forward to seeing Patsy and the Munster boys in Killarney at the weekend and by the way Patsy, “don’t forget those flies”.

Peter will represent Ireland at the 2015 International Match which will also be held at the Liffey. Peter will be joined by Kevin Dunne (Lough Derravaragh), Arden Pollock (Agivey), Albert Mulhall (Ounavarragh) and Darius Simkus (Loughrea). Eugene Nolan, of Tuam Anglers, will be the reserve for the 2015 team having finished in 6th place with 9 placings.

Whilst recent floods made these Liffey trout extremely difficult to tempt to the fly, twenty competitors still managed to catch and release 187 measurable fish with many more undersized fish released also. The Liffey is an absolutely fabulous river which produces many specimen trout every season.  With the olive fishing in full swing and the evening sedge fishing commencing, the Liffey is well worth a visit. Effective flies for the Liffey include the Grey Flag, Ginger Quill, Greenwells Glory and various spider and nymph patterns. Visiting anglers should consult with local angling clubs to ensure that they have the necessary permission to fish their water.
ITFFA would like to thank North Kildare Angling club for facilitating this competition and we wish the 2015 Irish team the very best of luck as they begin preparations for the International Match!

Irish Trout Fly Fishing Association

The primary aim of the Association is to organise and run Provincial competitions in order to select competitors for Interprovincial, National and International fly fishing competitions on both Loughs and Rivers.

Catch and release spinning on small streams in Co. Kerry

A copper spinner has always been a firm favourite of trout fishermen

Tomasz Ekert reports in his blog Sea Bass Hunting that this week has started well and his local Kerry rivers are producing some lovely brown trout on spinners, as well as an occasional salmon.

Tomasz fishes Catch and Release and makes sure his memories of a days fishing are kept alive by taking some really fine photos of his catch. After that they are carefully released to get on with making more fish or offer a chance of sport to another angler.

Anglers happy with the water on the Laune, hoping for more salmon

Clive Richards' fish from Johnston's on Monday evening

Billy Downes reports on some of the Catches on the Laune in the last week…

As of Sunday 8th June the water is at a beautiful 2 feet 8 inches on the gauge at Johnston’s and running clear. It may still be rising a bit and fishing is never good in rising water – today’s excuse. There were a few fish caught during the past week and some good sea trout were also landed. This fresh water gives us ideal water for the week. Will there be matching fishing that is the question.

Eileen Richards had a lovely fish of 7 lbs at the Rock Pool on the worm on Wednesday evening. Patrick Richard opened his salmon account with a beauty of 11lbs at Paul Connor’s.

Good water at the Owenmore and a few sea trout caught despite gales

Frank Maunsell reports on the conditions and prospects on the Owenmore Fishery in Co. Kerry…

09 June: We didn’t get all the rain that we expected but the river rose about six inches. Plenty of seatrout running and the heavy showers will keep the river topped up all week. We had five trout up to 3 lbs on Saturday on the White lake and we had two on the other lake on Sunday even though conditions were tough with the westerly gales.

Lough, stock and fish in a barrel, Mayo News

When the telephone rang and woke me from my Sunday afternoon siesta the last thing I was expecting was an invitation to join in a soccer game. The lads were a man short; would I care to make up the numbers?
I looked out through the window to see fleecy clouds drifting slowly across a bright sky, travelling east on a westerly breeze. I thought of Carra, of Otter Point and the easy drift over deep water to the Twin Islands, where trout would be feeding high in the water…

Sea Angling Improves on East Coast Beaches

Ruairi Coleman from the Swords Angling Centre reports that there have been a good number of species taken recently by anglers fishing on the East Coast. There have been plenty of smooth-hounds around Dublin the last week or two. On a recent outing Noel O’ Shea was in with me, he was part of a group that fished out of Malahide. The group had dogs, smoothies, ray and gurnards.

For up to date angling information and a range of top gear why not drop into Ruairi at his new shop in Swords. He stocks a full range of sea, game, pike and coarse angling tackle and bait. Swords Angling Centre is located in Applewood Village next door to the Orchard Public House.

Ruairi can be contacted by telephone at 087 707 0237 or by email at [email protected]

Lough Muckno Produces Some Nice Pike for Filip Fontaine from Belgium

Filip Fontaine from Belgium With a Nice Muckno Double

Angling guide Peadar O’Brien from Carrickmacross reports that Filip Fontaine from Belgium has been back in the area fishing with him. The pike fishing has been hard enough on Muckno of late but a recent pick up has seen plenty of fish hitting the lures. Unfortunately,  it has been hard to get them to hang on to them for long. A couple of acrobatic jumps and the lures have been sent flying by these toothy critters. However not them all and Filip landed some really nice doubles. Water levels are currently good and the water is also clear at the moment.

If you fancy a days guided pike fishing why not give Peadar a call at 087 9265867 or email him at [email protected]

A sea liced bar of silver on a dropping flood

Jason Nash of www.savagefishingblogspot.ie reports from the Bandon:

For the past couple of weeks fishing has been slow due to low water levels on the river. Salmon were present in good numbers but proved very hard to entice, with just a few fish falling mainly to the shrimp. Some sea trout were entering the system and I enjoyed a couple of nights out but unfortunately I brought nothing to hand. The best sea trout I hooked was pushing 2lbs but it just wouldn’t stop jumping and eventually shook off my size 8 Stoat’s Tail.

Jsaon Nash - Fish shimmerThe Bandon took a turn for the better though on Friday with water levels rising rapidly which is exactly what it needed. Saturday saw the river bowling down and spinning was the order of the day for me due to the height, speed and colour of the water. I ventured out in the evening, trying to give the river a chance to drop, and was rewarded with a beautiful fish of 11.5lbs.

Jason Nash - Salmon - June - Bandon 1On Sunday the river was in fine fettle and acceptable for all methods. On my way down the river I had a quick chuck with a Flying C and 3rd cast I had a follow from a fish which gave the bait one quick rattle and was gone again. A few more casts yielded no more interest but the evening looked promising. The next pool down was perfect for the fly so I stuck with my intermediate tip and tied on a gold bodied Willie Gunn which served me well during the last flood. Just as I was coming down to the sweet spot I saw some people walking in the field across the way and I was thinking how great it would be if I hooked a fish in front of them. Next cast and… the strollers were stopped in their tracks!! 15 minutes later and I had a sea liced bar of silver for them to admire which I estimated to be around 8lbs before I gently slipped her back.

All in all from talking to other fishermen the general consensus is that there was a good run of fish going through. I heard of only one grilse caught with most fish weighing between 8-14lbs. With the river settling down now lets see what the week ahead brings.

Compliments of:

Sunday's flood raises the water levels at Owenea

Lindsey Clarke reports  from OWENEA –  Monday 2nd to Sunday 8th June 2014.
Little to report here again! The river ran at very low levels until a small flood on Sunday. The gauge average for the week only read 0.10 metres and no rods fished this week.

Salmon about but anglers scarce on Lough Melvin

Lindsey Clarke reports  from LOUGH MELVIN –  Monday 2nd to Sunday 8th June 2014.

Lough Melvin was fairly quiet this week once again. I did hear of 2 salmon hooked and lost on flies in Rossinver Bay. There certainly is good numbers of fresh salmon in the lough but there are few rods fishing for them.
