Super mayfly fishing again on Corrib

Lough Corrib continued in fine form up to the weekend just gone, with mayfly hatching in great numbers, especially further south on the lake. This is the usual pattern, with the mayfly hatch starting in the Cornamona area and moving down the lake as the month goes on. Humid and thundery weather since then has made fishing difficult, and anglers are strongly advised to seek shelter when thunderstorms approach, and especially not to continue fishing with rods made of graphite/carbon etc.

Craig McKirdy reports on some excellent fishing in the Greenfields area, particularly for tourist anglers. Visiting anglers – father and son Theodor and Otto Ingstrup from Denmark had 13 fish over 3 days, taking home a nice one of 3.4lbs, with the rest released. Mark & Steve Turner , visiting from Leeds, UK, and fishing with Louis Brennan had 5 lovely fish on Tuesday. Lithuanian angler Marius Mazrimas along with Richard and Stuart Howard and Sean Donavan had 10 fish between them – Marius having the best fish at 2.9lbs.

Belgian visitor Michael Aerts along with his father were out with Don Stiffe of Greenfield House Hotel and had a lovely fish of 4.6lbs on Buzzers. Dutch angler John Skines, fishing with PJ Sullivan had 4 fish, all returned. French visitors Vincent Piriou and Henry Raffard along with Graham Stephens from the UK had 5 nice fish between them. Ennis angler Sean Dixon had 2 fish for 4.5lbs on Tuesday.

Brendan Mullins had 3 fish to the dap for 7.4lbs on his first day out. Christy and Brian O’Connell from Cork had 8 fish all to the dap. Local angler Eugene Kenny, along with another 2 anglers had 10 fish, all taken while dapping. Richard Lewis and Sean O’Donovan from Tipperary had 5 fish, all returned. Ennis angler Dan Mullins had 2 trout for 4.9lbs. A further 31 anglers had a great week, finishing with 110 fish, with a large amount being returned.

Phil Hall and Martin Conroy from London had a total of 9 trout, returning 7.

In the Oughterard area Stan Cosgraveand Mervyn Woods from Scotland had 10 fish over 2 days for 16lbs. UK angler Steve Watson landed 9 fish for one day’s fishing, all returned. Paddy Dawson from Northern Ireland fished for a week and landed 41 fish over the 7days, including 30 returned.

Cork angler Billy Kelleher had 12 fish over 2 days all to dry fly.

Ian Scott from Leeds was in touch with a nice report on his holiday, fishing in the Cornamona area with son Daniel and brother-in-law Stuart Irvine from Newcastle. They enjoyed excellent weather for most of the week, with mayfly quite sparse at times apart from 2 occasions when there were dozens available at a time. Dapping proved the most successful method, taking 53 fish in the week, with their best fish approx. 3lbs, although all 3 either rose or lost fish much bigger. The highlight of the week was a drift where all three rods (dapping) had fish on at the same time, all successfully landed, and all around 1. The lads sportingly returned all of their fish, and reported that it was their best holiday on the dap so far.

Gary Costelloe from Lakelands Angling Centre in Oughterard reported that the broken weather and good hatches kept their guests very satisfied with their fishing. The Clemont party from France had their best fishing in years, with 44 trout in 5 days – the best was 5lbs 6oz taken on the dap. Ian Garrett and Pat Molloy had 22 fish in 3 days, best 3lbs and all sportingly returned. John McGrath from Clare had 5 fish – best 3.3lbs, while his partner had a fine 5lbs 2oz trout on the dap, all in Portacarron Bay. Paddy Curran and friend John had a good day’s fishing, landing 5 trout – best fish 3lbs. Reggie Jackson and Neil O’Brien from Dublin had 5 trout, including a lovely fish of 4lbs. Inland Fisheries Ireland officers are out on a daily basis at the moment carrying out routine checks on both size and bag limits. Anglers are asked to please respect the minimum statutory size (13 inches) and bag limits (4 trout per day) and return any undersize fish to the water as quickly and carefully as possible.

Very good coarse fishing reported from many parts of Co. Cavan.

Alice Murtagh  Admin Assistant – North Western River Basin District at Corlesmore  reports on Coarse fishing for the Counties of Cavan and Leitrim.

Swan Lake Lough Gowna continues to fish well with plenty of fish, mostly Roach and some Tench.  Kevins Shore and Dernaferst North on Lough Gowna along with nearby Gulladoo are reported to be producing good catches of fish with hybrids dominating.  Killykeen at the deeps and grassy bank match section also giving good mixed catches with some Bream up to 5 lb.  Good returns are reported at the Derries Lower including good Bream.  Good mixed bags are being reported from Town Lake Killeshandra with bags up to 40 lb.  Some French anglers who are Pike fishing report good sized Pike in all areas and good Trout are being caught on the Annalee and Dromore River near Cootehill.

Sidnei is now catching fine trout with Angling Guide Richie Johnson on Lough Sheelin

Sidnei with a lovely Lough Sheelin trout

New post on Guide Fishing Ireland | with Richie Johnston

Sheelin Magic for Sidnei..

by RichieGFIreland

Last week I reported on how Sidnei from Brazil had returned to Ireland to try and catch Pike. This he achieved with a cracking 21 lb 10oz lure caught fish. He loved the midland loughs and fancied another day out and this time for Trout.

During the week, I took him to Lough Sheelin for a days fly fishing. Timing seemed just right, for soon after we got out onto the water, we were seeing plenty of Mayflies.

As Sidnei had never fly fished a lough before, only small rivers, we started off fishing dry flies in the shallower end of the lough from Finea to Derrysheridan. Before we even started fishing we saw an angler playing a good fish and Sidnei was keen to get started.

Even with a good steady stream of fly coming off,we saw very few fish taking them on the first 2 drifts. Then the wind increased, and we decided to change tack, and fish wets. Fishing a dark green Gosling on the bob, and a brighter wet mayfly on the point Sidnei hit his first fish after only a few minutes. The fish slammed into the bob fly as he dibbled it fast towards the boat. The fish looked like a nice one,and put up a great scrap, putting a big smile on Sidnei’s face when it hit the net. His first Irish lough Trout, weighing about 2.75 lb. A few pictures and the fish was returned.

All afternoon, we continued the drifts over shallow water, and on each one Sidnei turned a fish. He seemed to be taking to this style of fishing very well and by lunchtime he had 2 fish landed and another lost.

He also wanted to try the dap, but despite several attempts he did not turn a fish. Another change, Sidnei went back onto the dry fly, and a detatched body Wulff soon accounted for a nice fish of about 2 lb. This fish had taken a fly well ahead of the boat and was covered quickly, and the cast was obviousy spot on as he took straight away.

The wind increased even more towards evening and the wet fly was tried once more, resulting in 3 more fish landed and another 3 missed. Two of these fish landed fell to Sidnei’s rod, showing how well he was doing at his first day lough style fishing.

By the end of the day, with no sign of  the wind dropping and little chance of Spent going out, we headed for home.

Sidnei finished with 5 Sheelin Trout on his first attempt, a great result I think on any Irish Lough..

A permit is needed for Lough Sheelin and this can be purchased at the local IFI office on the lough.

Sidnei cannot wait to have another try when the Spent fishing comes on,but he has other goals too, some fly caught Pike, and some Bass in Kerry when the season re opens. the man has a bucket list of fishing and so far is ticking all the boxes!!

Next week I am off to Sheelin again, then to Carrowmore for Salmon and then Mask and Corrib for Trout..

170lb skate for Donegal's Kiwi girl

Skate on the Kiwi girl
Skate on the Kiwi girl

Sean Carty of Carty’s Land and Sea Sports in Bundoran reports:
On the boats this week the big news comes yet again from Declan Kilgannons boat ” The Kiwi Girl ” . Last year the Kiwi Girl put Donegal bay back on the map for deep sea big game fishing after landing a massive 628lb Bluefin Tuna and just weeks later landing several more and a record breaking Blue shark of 199lb in weight . Last Friday they done it again . This time they landed a huge Skate of about 170lb . Before now there hasn’t been much effort put into catching Skate in the area but it has always been known that they were there with quite regular hookings of these beasts . Now we know that they can be targeted and caught. Just another reason for anglers to visit Donegal bay “Irelands premier angling location “.

Excellent trout fishing with Clonanav

Great activities with Clonanav Fly Fishing’s Andrew Ryan reporting:

The fishing just keeps getting better and better! The weather the last few days has been warm and mild with some showers has really helped hatches and fish catches.

At the weekend we had the ESbi Fishing club fishing at Clonanav. A great few days fishing were had by all. Here are a few images below. All anglers in the group did well and managed to land several fish!

Clonanav - Esbi catchAlso down at Clonanav regulars Keith and Ian were back for their weeks fishing last week. It was according to Ian one of the best weeks he has ever had. Ian is a seasoned angler and knows the local waters very well. He reckons this is one of the best weeks he has ever had here. His best day he managed to land 12 and lose many more.

Keith did really well too, by landing some really good fish over 16 inches. Most of the fish were caught on a combo of klinkhammer and nymph or on small dries.

12 year old Alex among the lucky anglers with catches from the Slaney

Alex Wilding catching his first fish
Alex Wilding catching his first fish

Brian Stevens, Slaney River Trust, reports:

18/05/2014: This week shows how fickle salmon fishing can be. Wednesday was a real red letter day for the river with a great run of fish with sealiced fish being landed on beats from Enniscorthy to as far up as Tullow. The fish are clearly running hard when they come in.

On one beat 3 rods made contact with a total of 14 fish with six of them landed. On Friday not one fish was landed on that beat despite very good water and hardly a fish was seen.

Can I remind all anglers of the importance of catch and release technique – the fish should preferably be released without being taken out of the water or photographed and immediately returned – I had a report today of a fish being out of the water a number for minutes before being returned much the worse for its experience.

19/05/2014: I reported yesterday that in particular the middle of last week had produced great fishing. An SRT board member kindly did a ring round the river and it has confirmed the picture of a great week with fish spread throughout the system.

The attached report details some of the catches and lucky anglers from 11 Beats. In particular it was good to hear that Alex Wilding (aged 12), pictured here with his first salmon on the line, went to land it while fishing near Clonegal in a rain storm. Fishing is not just a sport for old men!

The report shows that you can meet fish throughout the system. An active angling presence on the river is the best protection for the fish stocks. If you witness any illegal activity, breaches of the fly only rule above Enniscorthy or the catch and release rules be sure to urgently contact IFI.

Expected rain should see Owenmore fish well

Frank Maunsell reports on the conditions and prospects on the Owenmore Fishery in Co. Kerry…

There is rain forecast for Saturday and Sunday which means the river will fish well into the week. The rest of the week is broken and that will keep the water level up. Plenty of seatrout moving in the river and the Estuary though there seems to be more seals than usual around the Estuary. There is a population explosion in the seals and something is going to have to be done about them.
