Trouting with Eamonn C on the Annalee

A Well Conditioned Brownie from the Annalee
A Well Conditioned Brownie from the Annalee

Angling guide Eamonn Conway from Dundalk reports that the Annalee River is running low and clear at the moment because of all the fair weather we are having recently. Some of the trout are a wee bit spooky in the low water conditions and presenting the dry fly and nymphs delicately and maintaining a natural drift in the current is crucial for success. There was some nice hatches of olives during the day but no signs of early mayfly on the river just yet. Streamers worked in the pools taking some jack pike as well as some nice trout. Tight lines, Eamonn C

Irish Angling Update – 01/05/14

Boats heading out from the Carrick shore in very bright conditions at the start of the Corr na Mona Anglers competition for Galway Hospice
Boats heading out from the Carrick shore in very bright conditions at the start of the Corr na Mona Anglers competition for Galway Hospice

Anglers are currently enjoying the lovely mild but sometimes showery weather for this time of year.  Angling activity is very high now on both inland waters and at sea where there was some excellent fishing to report in the very fine weather conditions.

Good hatches of large dark olives brought good trout fishing on many rivers in Co. Waterford along with hatches of Iron blue duns and Hawthornes.  Great hatches of olives brought some fine trout to the net this week on Lough Sheelin.  Congratulations to Dylan Ennis on winning a boat at the Irish Trout Fly fishing Associations (ITFFA) youths fundraising competition, which was held at Lough Owel on 27th April 2014 and attracted 82 anglers.  Twenty two anglers, representing fifteen clubs, competed for the Jimmy Allard Cup at the Irish Trout Fly Fishing Association (ITFFA) Youths National Championship and the winner was Ryan Binley of Foxford Angling Club. Over in Corrib good hatches of olives brought plenty of trout to the net and some Mayfly have started to hatch now but only in small numbers.  On nearby Lough Mask, there was similar good fishing reported with wetflies producing plenty of trout.  Easterly winds did impact on trout fishing on Loughs Conn and Cullin but on some days the fishing was excellent.  Similar conditions were reported on Lough Arrow but some Mayfly have appeared in the last few days.  At Carrigavantry, a huge rich diet of food was found by Dr. Ken Whelan on a recent visit there and he also was rewarded with catching a very big Brown Trout on fly which he quickly released. Up at Nurney Lakes in Co. Kildare, a fine rainbow trout of 15 lb. was the highlight of a good week at the fishery.

pollack
Catch of the Week goes this 15lb pollack caught onboard the Naomh Carta out of Cork Harbour

Some lovely pollack were the reward for a group of anglers fishing with charter skipper Daryl Ewing in Donegal Bay. Charter skipper Gerry Keohane operating in Cork Harbour had a group of anglers out at the weekend and they enjoyed some lovely pollack fishing including a fine specimen of 15 lb. which is the biggest reported to us this year. At Loop head, charter skipper Luke Aston reports that the fishing has got better for his clients with some good Huss along with good pollack and mackerel were reasonably plentiful. Up in north County Dublin, new tackle shop owner Ruairi Coleman from Applewood in Swords caught some nice flounders and some codling and whiting just at dark on several beaches in the past week.  Down further along the east coast, anglers fishing with charter skipper Kit Dunne enjoyed some good deep sea fishing for Thornback Ray and the first smoothound of the season was also taken on the trip.  Wexford guide Sid Jones organised a deep sea fishing trip with charter skipper Martin Colfer at Youghal in aid of Cancer Research and the eleven anglers enjoyed a great day landing codling, pollack, coalfish and whiting.  The first twaite shad of the season was reported from the River Barrow at St. Mullins.

Low water conditions produced only two nice salmon for clients fishing at Delphi but sport should pick up with the some heavy rain forecast which should improve the catches in the rivers and on the loughs.  The lovely sunny weather impacted on salmon fishing on the River Moy with only a few fish reported but some rain forecast should improve the fishing very soon.  The good steady salmon fishing continues on Carrowmore Lake in North West Mayo and 18 fish were accounted for last week with salmon up to 9.5 lb. reported.  Low water conditions were prevalent on the Ballisodare Fishery but there were 13 salmon reported for the week.  There was an improvement in salmon catches from the River Laune where some nice fish to 12 lb. were reported. There was good improvement in salmon fishing on many fisheries in the Cork Kerry area in the past week.  A fine 7 lb. specimen Sea Trout is the highlight of the week on Lough Currane.  Fishery Manager Nigel Rush caught the first salmon of the season the Kylemore in Connemara.  Conditions are getting better for good salmon fishing at the Galway Weir where fish to 12.5 lb. were taken. Up on the River Drowes, low water conditions prevailed but some nice salmon were reported and some grilse mainly on fly. There was good fishing reported on Lough Melvin nearby.

At Lanesborough, there was no hot water flowing again last week and with easterly winds predominating, it was cold at times but some nice catches of mainly roach were taken and some occasional tench up to 5 lb. 2 oz. were caught.   Good catches of Roach to over a pound along with bream and hybrids with some catches over 50 lb. were reported from many venues near Arvagh, Carrigallen and Killeshandra.  World Pairs Champion Cathal Hughes was the man on form winning over €1500 at the four day Easter Festival on Lough Muckno where roach were dominant in good catches along with hybrids mainly on pole and feeder methods.

In the Cavan Leitrim area there was still plenty of good pike fishing enjoyed in the loughs near Killeshandra, Carrigallen, Cootehill and Ballyconnell with some big fish reported taken on all methods including flyfishing from belly boats.  French anglers enjoyed good fishing at Belturbet also.  Angling journalist Uwe Pinnau enjoyed another good week pike fishing in Ireland staying with angling guide Kevin Lyons and Uwe and a friend caught 100 pike during their stay using all methods including fly.  At Mullingar, angling guide Michael Flanagan reports that a regular group of Italian anglers fished with him again on the midland loughs and enjoyed super pike fishing on a variety of lures up to 20 lb. Mick also reported that there was some fine pike fishing on Lough Ree with fish up to 22 lb. reported along with a lovely 7 lb. trout.  German visitors fishing with angling guide Kenny Sloan enjoyed some good pike fishing on a number of loughs in the Foxford area.  Down on Inniscarra Lake, anglers fishing with angling guide Alan Houlihan enjoyed some excellent pike fishing including a lovely pike on fly taken by young angler Chris Fehilly.

IFI is taking part in an international survey with counterparts in the USA, UK and Australia to find out more about your opinions on fish habitat restoration work. The survey should take no more than 5 minutes and is available by clicking here. There’s a link at the end of the survey that takes you a separate, unlinked page where you can enter the draw for some great prizes including a €300 tackle voucher, measuring mats and angling books.

It is another bank holiday weekend coming up here in Ireland so I urge anglers to look carefully at weather reports for the weekend including tide tables if going afloat at sea.  All anglers going afloat at sea and on inland waters should always wear a life jacket and if you are going far please inform somebody where you intend to fish.  Be safe while enjoying the best of Irish Angling this weekend,

Tight lines especially in Ireland

Tasmanian Devil lands specimen Twaite Shad in scenic St Mullins

South East Angling Services Gerard Doran heads to the beautiful St Mullins in Co. Carlow and reports:

Its that time of year again when the Shad arrive in numbers into the Barrow system to spawn. All though Twaite Shad are also recorded as being caught in various other rivers over the years the best location to catch them is the river Barrow with St Mullins being the main hotspot. Spring tides at the end of April and into early May see the herring type fish move upstream to spawning locations. They are a great sporting fish attracting anglers from all corners of the country including many ‘specimen hunters’.

Ger Doran - Shad specimenMost anglers use a lure called a Tasmanian Devil or Tassies as they are commonly known to target Shad with many other small metals and hard lures also very effective an often overlooked, do not forget to debarb your hooks. A light or ultra – light spinning outfit is ideal for casting small lures across the river to cover as much water as possible. A long handled landing net is ideal especially during low water levels.

Above is a picture of a specimen fish which was released after some quick photos and scale samples. As always when fishing take care when landing fish and ensure correct equipment is available to hand to ensure the fish returns to the water unharmed. Taking the time to revive any tired fish is important also.

Irish Ladies Fly Fishing Association going for gold in Wales

The Irish Ladies Fly Fishing Association (ILFA) is taking part in the 2014 International Ladies Fly-fishing Championship being hosted by Wales in a few weeks.

The Championship is being held on the Llyn Trawsfynydd, in north Wales and the competition day will be Thursday 22nd May.

The team will be travelling on Saturday 17th May and will be working hard for the four days prior to the competition day.

Madeleine Kelly, ILFA Chairman, said

‘We are really excited to be going to Wales this year.  The country-side in north Wales is so lovely and we’ve visited Llyn Trawsfynydd on a previous occasion when we did very well so we have high expectations of ourselves. We’ve only been able to give ourselves four practice days in order to get to know the lake so we will definitely be working very hard. We’d have loved to have gone for longer but our finances don’t allow it.’

The Irish Team who are from all over Ireland have a wealth of experience. The team will be captained by Julie Gerry from Maynooth in Co. Kildare who has twelve caps and has carried out a captain’s role on four previous occasions including leading her team to the gold position in Co Kerry in 2013.

The team members are:

  • Julie Gerry, Captain, Maynooth, Co. Kildare
  • Madeleine Kelly, Vice-Captain, Hilltown, Co. Down
  • Linda Straghan, Derryhennett, Co. Armagh
  • Pat Byrne, Ballymore Eustace, Co. Kildare
  • Pauline McClenaghan, Derry City
  • Cher McCrave, Rathfarnam, Co. Dublin
  • Jenny Casey, Clane Co. Kildare
  • Susan Brown, Lisburn, Co. Antrim

  • Lisa O’Hagan, Dundalk, Co. Louth
  • Hubert Smith, Team Coach, Dundalk, Co Louth
  • Mick McShane, Fly-tyer, Dundalk, Co Louth

Julie Gerry, Team Captain, said

‘There are four new-caps with us this year.  It’s great to be able to attract new women into the Association and to be able to give them the experience of representing Ireland at this level.  Everyone is excited and we have high hopes of doing well. This year for the first time we have two Dundalk men as our Coach & Fly-tyer.  We have been working hard with them already including a training session at Courtlough. Being part of this team is an excellent way to improve angling skills. I’d recommend it to any woman who is interested in fly-fishing’

How to get involved

Any woman who is interested in being part of the 2015 team is invited to take part in the team selection trial happening at Carrigavantry in Co Wexford on Sunday 4th May.  Please visit www.irishladiesflyfishing.com for more information

This will be the second of the four trials which will be used to select the Irish Team for the International Ladies Flyfishing Championships in 2015 which will happen in England

Well stocked Knockaderry and Carrigavantry fish well

David Tantrum Waterford City and County Trout Angling Association tells us that Knockaderry and Carrigavantry have recently been stocked and are both fishing exceptionally well. Carrigavantry is famous for its olive hatch and this year there has been prolific hatch with rising trout all over the lake. By contrast knockaderry has not yet had a major hatch.

This Tuesday saw the secretary and treasurer braving a flat calm and brilliant sunshine on Knockaderry not a fish or another angler to be seen. Fishing deep with nymphs produced 12 fish to six pounds including hooking rock that on trying to dislodge the fly moved off!  Another break off on 8 lbs. flouro carbon. Spooning revealed the fish were stuffed full of hog lice and that was why the leaded Hares Ear did the job. Due to the cost and difficulty in sourcing quality trout we are asking fishermen to limit their catch. These large fish take along time to land and need handling carefully when releasing to make sure they are fully recovered.

FLY FISHING ON KNOCKADERRY CARRIGAVANTRY BALLYSCANLON

Carrigavantry – This 30 acre reservoir is hidden in the hills behind Tramore.  The lake can be fished from the dam and road and the rest of the lake shore needs waders. The deepest part is the island at 10 feet.Prolific hatches of lake olives and damsels occur. Stocking is with both browns and rainbows. You could loose your catch here to a 20lb Pike!

Knockaderry – The deepest part of the lake is 24 feet at the dam tower, the average depth is 6ft and this results in good weed growth. Trout fatten fast in this fertile water on caddis, snails and stickle backs, while lake olives, buzzers sedges and damsels bring on prolific rises. This 80 acre reservoir is a traditional top of the water drift fishery.

New members are welcome and an active programme of fly tuition is pursued to encourage beginners and get our youth out into the countryside.

17 pike in 3 days for German angler in Mayo

mayo pike
Bert Muellrick, Germany, with one of his 17 Mayo pike

Regular visitor, Bert Müllrick, Germany, enjoyed 3 fantastic day’s pike fishing in the Foxford area says Markus Müller in the Ballina office.

Bert was fishing with local angling guide, Kenny Sloan. Over the 3 days, Bert fished on four different waters including Lough Conn and Levally Lake and caught a total of 17 pike.

mayo pike
Bert Muellrick, Germany, with one of his 17 Mayo pike

His best fish was a fine wild pike of 19 lbs. caught on a trolled roach. With such good fishing Bert is eager to return later in the year to crack the 20 lbs. mark!

Go fishing with Kenny…

Kenny Sloan has become synonymous with big pike in the Foxford area. Kenny can guide you on the big wild waters around him Conn and Cullen but he also has a lot of smaller waters at his disposal and even if the wind blows he always has some where to fish making your break as productive as possible.
