Easterly winds and bright sunshine affected trout fishing on Loughs Conn & Cullin during the week. Despite these difficult conditions, anglers witnessed some good rises and takes.
On Lough Cullin, Gary Binley and his father Richard, both Foxford, had some good sport and landed 8 trout between them. Also on Cullin, Greg Mullin, Dublin and boat partner, Jason Walsh, Castlebar & Dublin, caught 5 trout, all around 1.25 lbs.
Fishing the Pontoon area, local angler, Billy McGhee along with Gerry Heaslip, Dublin, boated a total of 8 trout, best at 1.5 lbs. The Cloghans area produced some nice catches for local anglers Padraig Kelly (2 trout, best at 1.5 lbs.) and Stephen Browne (4 trout). Walter and Susan Byrne, Offaly, also enjoyed good sport in the Cloghans area over a few days with 8 trout on their best day (best fish 2 lbs.). Paul Caslin, Castlebar, was successful around Glass Island and Victoria Bay, catching 3 trout averaging 2 lbs. The Northern end of Lough Conn produced two trout, weighing 2 lbs. each, for Ian Wise, Cloonamoyne Fishery.
Best flies for the week included: Dry and Wet Olive patterns, Yellow Mayfly, Green Peter and Chilli Bumble.
Water levels were dropping slightly during the week on the Ballisodare Fishery making angling that little bit harder. Anglers caught a total of 13 salmon (5 released) with the majority being taken on fly.
French flyangler, Jean Bernard Chenaux, enjoyed a great day’s fishing with two salmon at 7 lbs. and 10 lbs. (one released), while Denis Crawley also had a ten pounder on fly.
The biggest fish of the week, a fine 11.5 lbs. springer, was landed by Kevin Flynn. Kevin’s fish was also caught on fly.
Other successful anglers included John Murray, Paul McMahon, Gareth Norris and Thomas O’Donavan Jnr. The most successful fly for the week was the Posh Tosh, taking the majority of the fly-caught fish.
Go Fishing…
Salmon fishing is contolled by the Ballisodare Fishing Club. Due to extensive conservation measures by the club and the fisheries board in recent years, there is now a substantial run of spring salmon in the river from April to mid June, and in June – July the peak of its large grilse run is seen.
As in previous weeks, Carrowmore Lake stands up to its reputation as one of Ireland’s best spring salmon fisheries, write Markus Muller from our Ballina office. Despite the calm and bright conditions throughout the week, the fishery produced a total of 18 salmon, 6 of which were released. Amongst the successful anglers were Brian Moore, Northern Ireland, with an 8 pounder and Tom Cullin with his boat partner Brian Fitzpatrick, both Wicklow, who boated fish of 9 lbs. and 9.5lbs. respectively. Most successful flies for the week were Clan Chief, Claret Dabbler, Bibio, Jaffa and Cascade patterns.
Go fishing…

Markus Muller, IFI Ballina reports that the dry and extremely sunny weather impacted heavily on angling during the past week. As a consequence, angling effort had been exceptionally low with only a few fish being caught.

Anthony Murphy was one of the few lucky anglers with 2 salmon at 7 lbs. and 9 lbs. caught on the Armstrong Fishery. However, East Mayo Anglers water still produced a few fine spring salmon including a ten pounder on fly for Michael Griffith, Northern Ireland, and a 9.5 lbs. fish for Michael O’Keane., also Northern Ireland. Also on East Mayo, Kieran Murphy, Wexford, had a 10 lbs. salmon on worm.

Well done to Wexford guide Sid Jones of Fishing Ireland who organised a boat trip on Sunday Apr 27 with the proceeds going in aid of Cancer research around the Hook in Wexford. He tells us how the day went:
My latest trip was a bit special as it was in aid of cancer research, it was arranged to leave from Youghal but changed to Duncannon due to recent bad weather hampering us.
For this trip I acquired the services of Whale/Dolphin watching and angling expert Martin Colfer and his spacious twin engine and twin hulled catamaran the Rebecca C with excellent facilities including wheelchair access, superb safety features and life jackets worn at all times.
After Martin gave us an introduction we set off and quickly arrived on one of many marks with ease due to the power of this boat. Some of the species caught were Cod, Pollock, Coalie and Whiting The first fish of the day was caught by first time angler Tracey Murphy and the largest fish of the day was claimed by the youngest angler Amy Lynch who has fished with me now for some time now and has landed the biggest fish on a couple of occasions.
11 of us fished in total with “comfort” and a great day was had by one and all with even a bit of fancy dress thrown in to add a bit of colour. Thank you to Martin for providing a great service and his donation, a true gent… I’m looking forward to getting down to Youghal very soon and fishing with him again …
Lindsey Clarke reports on the salmon fishing at Lough Mevlin from 21 – 27 April…
This week brought better weather with rising air temperatures and some light conditions though the wind was strong on occasions. Still, it really felt like spring.
The trout fishing was variable and I think this was due in great part to varying air pressures with the barometer rising and falling constantly. There were some reports of fair trout fishing. 4 rods in 2 boats on Friday recorded 8 Gillaroo caught weighing around ¾ to 1lb and 2 sonaghan with 3 good fished missed/lost. Lindsey Clarke

Lindsey Clarke reports on the salmon fishing at Lough Mevlin from 21 – 27 April…
This week brought better weather with rising air temperatures and some light conditions though the wind was strong on occasions. Still, it really felt like spring.
The week started well with 4 salmon caught on Monday with 3 of these caught in the Rossinver Fishery. Terry Bradley recorded a 7lb salmon caught on a fly in Rossinver Bay. Nial Sweeney reported an 8lb salmon caught on a Yellow Belly Devon Minnow between the County River & Ward’s Point. Gardiner Mitchell accounted for a 6½lb fish caught on a fly from the Sea Pools
Lindsey Clarke reports on the fishing on the Drowes last week from 21 – 27 April…
The Drowes continued to run at very low levels again this week and the gauge reading is under 0.5 metre at this stage. The week brought good weather (for non anglers!) and plenty of sunshine which made salmon angling a little challenging in the bright, low water conditions. Despite the odds, there were a number of salmon caught this week.
Gardiner Mitchell accounted for a 6½lb fish caught on a fly from the Sea Pools
On Monday, William Rainey recorded a 5½lb grilse caught on worm from the Sea Pools. On Tuesday, Joe Darragh reported a 6lb grilse caught on a Flying ‘C’ lure from the Red Roof. On Thursday, Michael McEvoy logged an 8lb salmon caught on prawn from the Mill Pool and Vincent Hatton accounted for a 7lb fish caught on a Green-butt Cascade fly. On Friday, Dave Olphert recorded a 7½lb salmon caught on a #12 Green-butt Cascade fly from Clancy’s Pool. On Saturday, Stephen McNally reported a 6lb grilse caught on worm from the Sea Pools and Gardiner Mitchell accounted for a 6½lb fish caught on a fly from the Sea Pools. The warm weather looks set to continue but there is some rain forecast and hopefully it will be heavy enough to raise water levels somewhat. Lindsey Clarke IFI-Ballyshannon.

25/4/14 Lough Currane produced a fine 8 lbs Hatchery Salmon today, caught on the troll by Local ghillie Mr. Bob Priestley and when I asked, any chance of a photo, Bob replied in the freezer, in other words a frozen Asset. Now to catch of the day and that goes to Mr. Barry Martin of Cork, and for good reason he caught a cracker of a Sea Trout of 8 ½ lb. on the troll, while fishing with his good friend Mr. Gerry O’Sullivan also of Cork and just for the record, Barry has fished the Waterville Fishery all his life so its not surprising he came up trumps, even I can remember Barry holding the boat at the point of Grassy Island, for his cousin David in the Early seventy’s. Staying in the reminiscing department I was fishing with Mr. Tommy O’Sullivan of Beenbane Waterville and London, and his late Father Mr. Tom O’Sullivan was one of the great Gillie’s of the Waterville Fishery and as Tommy said to me, that his father was the greatest fly fishermen that the Waterville fishery has ever seen, well I will second that, because as a child I witnessed Tom catch many a Salmon on the River Inny and Lough Currane. And also Tommy was my ghillie in the early seventy’s and caught me many a Salmon, nothing like old times. Wind ESE light and fresh to strong this afternoon, reasonable cloud cover this morning heavy cloud in the afternoon followed by heavy rain this evening.
Barry Martin and Gerry O’Sullivan with a nice salmon
26/4/14 Lough Currane was on the wild side with a strong gusty NW wind blowing with heavy showers, but with all that some boats did venture out, but alas they failed to entice my Noble Game Fish in all departments. Wind as already stated, amount of rain fall yesterday 18.8 mm.
27/4/14 There was one fine Salmon caught on the troll in the 9 lb. class, by Mr. Michael Shultz of Berlin, Germany, while fishing with his ghillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com Wind North light with reasonable cloud cover. Just for the record will put photo up as soon as I get it, reason being I was on the road and missed the photo shoot, sorry for this.
Mr. Michael Shultz with a nice salmon
28/4/14 Mr. Michael Shultz Of Berlin, Germany, again takes all the head lines on Lough Currane in the wild Atlantic Salmon department, with a fine 9 lbs Salmon caught on the troll, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and yes, I didn’t fail in the paparazzi department. Wind S light to fresh with bright sunshine all day.
Joseph Whelan with a fine specimen Sea Trout of 7 lb. from Lough Currane.
29/4/14 Lough Currane was on the quiet side in my noble Salmon department, but the same couldn’t be said in the specimen Sea Trout department, Mr. Joseph Whelan of Limerick caught a cracker of a specimen Sea Trout on the troll, weighing in just under 7 lb. while fishing with his gillie Mr. Terence Wharton Jnr. Now for Joseph’s quote of the day, as Terence netted his noble Sea trout, he said, now that was worth the trip down. Wind SE light with reasonable cloud cover.
30/4/14 All quiet in the catching department, so we will head for the catch and lost department, renowned local Gillie Mr. Vincent O’Sullivan of www.vincentsfishing.com reported that he and his client, lost a Salmon in the 9 lb. class in the fly department, at least they saw a bit of action in the carbon fiber bending department. Local Gillie Mr. John Murphy and his client were heading out on Lough Currane this evening, his client requested that I hold the press until they returned from their evening session, will do, he did give some upper lakes news, He reported to me that he was fishing on Cloonaghlin earlier today and he caught a few nice Brown Trout. Wind SW light to fresh with good cloud cover with the odd bit of sunshine breaking through, followed with the odd light misty shower.
EILEEN CARROLL MURPHY from the IFI office in Macroom reports on a range of salmon fisheries in the Cork Kerry area.

LAUNE SALMON AND TROUT ANGLERS’ ASSOCIATION WATERS AND BEAT 3
Angling Report 28th April (Email to Laune Angling Report)
Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association waters and Beat 3.
As of Monday 28th April, glad to report that there were a few fish caught during the week. The best fish of the week that I heard of goes to John Turner who got his season off to an early start with what was described as a ‘fine 12 lb fish’ at Johnston’s on the worm on Friday. There were fish caught on Saturday on Beat 3 and at Paul Connors. With fish last weekend as well could this be the start of fishing on the Laune? With the lovely rise in water to over 1.3M at the Laune Bridge and rising, prospects for the coming week are good.
Angling effort has been low up to now but with it being late April and good water that will change. News of Sea Trout is scarce so far.
Permits for Laune Anglers waters right now cost only €25 per day.
Beat 3: Water on Beat 3 is ideal right now and there is always a chance of a fish if you are out there. Thomas Ward fished Beat 3 yesterday without getting a pull but as a compensation he witnessed for the first time the upstream migration of elvers at the Island Pool on Beat 3. Tom said that there was a continuous two foot wide strip of elvers swimming up by the right bank for 1.5 hrs.
Prospects: Good, there are always a few fish running the Laune especially in this water.
Anglers please note: A ‘One Day’ salmon permit for Beat 3 only costs €25 probably the best value in salmon fishing in the country with a good chance of a fish when the water is right.
End Billy Downes Secretary Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association
