Local die-hard lure anglers Ray Horgan and Pat O’Shea struck silver at last! The lads have stuck to lure fishing all through the winter and have persevered despite countless blanks. At last their efforts have been rewarded. Over the last few days the bass have re-appeared again on the outer Harbour marks and the two hardy anglers were in the right place at the right time.
Ray Horgan’s bass
Ray reports that he had this fine 60cm fish on a Tackle House Feed Shallow on an early morning session. The water was still coloured but despite that the fish had no problem targeting the lures. Ray lost another fish almost at his feet which he reckons was the same size and he had numerous other fish bump the lures.
Pat O’Shea availed of the fine weather and headed out at mid-day. In a short two hour session he had a 53cm bass to a Feed Shallow and a 50cm fish to a Savage Gear Sandeel. It just goes to show its not all about being there at dusk or dawn!
Eric Jouen with his 9lb Sea Trout is our 'Catch of the Week' winner
Ghillie/Guide Vincent Appleby describes how the week went on Lough Currane: 09/04/14 There were a few boats manipulating their flies and lures, but alas they failed to entice my Noble Game Fish be it Salmon or Sea Trout, so going by today’s performance my Noble Anglers had too much drink on the slate last night, on that note, we will head upstream to Lough Derriana and let Mr. Michael Jones and his good friend Mr. Maurice Willis, tell about their days action. We had great sport on Lough Derriana, nothing big, but we had over 40 Trout to the boat, (4 nice Trout over 12 inches ideal for the table) No Duck Fly. Maurice, had a Kelt and I broke in another Kelt, but all in all a great day out. Wind SW light and overcast. Lobster Cheers, theres no slate here! 10/04/14 You could say today was a Family affair in the wild Atlantic Salmon and Sea trout department. First in the striking zone was Mr. Paul Curran of London, who caught a fine 9 lbs Salmon on the troll while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville Boats and at [email protected] and staying with Waterville Boats, Mr. Eric Jouen, caught a cracker of a Sea Trout in the 9 lbs class on the troll, on the south side. Wind SW this morning then veered NE in the afternoon. Now to the local news department, the international renowned Lobster Bar got a new facelift today, in more ways than one!
A Family affair Eric Jouen – with a lovely 9lb Sea Trout is our ‘Catch of the Week’ winner. 11/04/14 There was a light NW wind blowing, and it wasn’t long before Mr. Axel ZurBrugge, trolling rod was singing the Lough Currane’s National anthem, and after a good battle with his Noble Salmon his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com took the net, and in one swipe there were smiles all round as Axel admired his fine 10 lbs. Salmon. Just for the record Mr. Axel ZurBrugge, was fishing out of www.butlerarms.com Mr. Neil O’Shea and Mr. Axel ZurBrugge 12/04/14 Attention All Gillie’s, look out there is a young Gillie in the making so we better watch it, because there was history made today On Lough Currane when 4 year old Fionan Brain caught his first Wild Atlantic Salmon, weighing in at 10 lbs and as he arrived back at the Bog, Inland fisheries Officer Mr. Sean Moran was there to make sure he had his licence and I can tell you he was one proud young man to show his Salmon licence and his Noble Salmon and may it be the first of many. Now for rest of the news there isn’t
any. Wind NW light with misty rain this morning then the sun broke through. Mr. Sean Moran, Master Fionan Brain, Mr. Sion Brain 13/04/14 Straight to the trolling and the C & R department, a guest fishing with his Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught and returned a fine 11 lbs Salmon. Staying in the trolling department, Mr. Axel ZurBrugge Of Germany, fishing out of www.butlerarms.com and with his Gillie Mr. Neil O‘Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught a fine 9 lbs Salmon on the troll. Now for quote of the day and that comes from a German Angler, Mr. Axel ZurBrugge, I have been fishing 10 days and caught 3 Salmon, I think that’s very good, and I can tell you Axel there is no argument to that. Wind NW light with reasonable cloud cover. Mr. Axel ZurBrugge Of Germany My Noble Thrush 14/04/14 Sun may have been bright and the sky’s clear with a light Variable wind but this didn’t deter my Noble salmon into action, first in the striking zone was a guest fishing with his Gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com caught a fine Salmon in the 10 lbs class on the troll and staying in the trolling department, there was a cracker of a Salmon in the 11 lbs class, caught by Mr. Tam Hitmiang of Waterville. Now for quote of the day and that comes from Tam’s good wife Mrs. Marietta Hitmiang, behind every great man there is a great women and going by today’s fishing performance there is no argument to that. Frank Donnelly and his Guest Tam and Marietta
That is your ration for the week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts. Vincent Appleby
Brian Stevens, Slaney River Trusts reports for the week ended 13th April:
It would seem that most fish are still running through the lower beats with the great majority caught there very fresh and still carrying sea lice.
There are few resident showing in the pools downstream of Bunclody. While good number fish have been met up stream, including this circa 10lber caught by Denis O’ Donnell who had a day ticket on the Tullow Club water on Wednesday, the consensus is that there is not a great stock in the river. I am aware of 11 fish caught below Bunclody for the week including another 20 pounder on Monday and another very good fish lost today. 10lber caught by Denis O’ Donnell
David McEvoy tells us of the activities in Delphi during the week:
Fishing has picked up here at Delphi in the last week with four fish landed. There were also a few fish lost and a few more seen. Having said that considering the conditions one would have expected more but the fish we got were beauties.
Andrew Lyall
Andrew Lyall had the first fish of the week on Tuesday. It was a sea liced fish off Finlough of 7lbs9ozs, taken on a Collie Dog. The fish was taken in Gough’s bay. Needless to say Andrew was well pleased to hold onto the fish this year unlike last year when he lost a fish during a very difficult week with low water and bright sunshine.
Victoria Love who caught a 13lb salmon
On Wednesday the 9th we had two cracking fish. The first was taken by Victoria Love off the Sunk Rock on Doolough. The fish weighed in at 13lbs and great celebrations followed. Victoria rightly thought it would be hard to better that fish but I’m afraid Cian Murtagh had other ideas when he landed a beauty of 13lbs15ozs from Duck Run on a Willie Gunn under the watchful eye of Peter O’Reilly.
Just when I thought the week was done, Andrew Lyall had his second of the week from Finlough this afternoon. The fish weighed in at 9lbs12ozs and was taken on a Collie Dog.
With water levels holding up nicely, hopefully the trend of the last few days will continue and we will see some more fish recorded.

Go fishing…
At Delphi Lodge, with many years of experience with the timing of the best runs of fish, we have in place a price system that offers both great value fishing and lets our anglers know when they have the best chance to catch a fresh run spring salmon or a summer grilse or Delphi sea trout.
Three salmon poachers were caught at a river in Erris last September by Inland Fisheries officers using night vision goggles.
James Coyle of Tipp, Belmullet and Peter Howard of Shraigh West, Bunnahowen, Belmullet both appeared at Belmullet District Court on Wednesday last charged with poaching on September 4, 2013.
James Ward, solicitor for the Inland Fisheries, said that at 9pm on the night in question the two men, and a third who is underage, were spotted at an area known as Doctor’s Pool on the Owenmore River near Bangor Erris putting a net into the river and then bringing the net up towards the road. All three attempted to get into a car driven by a fourth individual but, upon seeing the Fisheries’ officers, they ran away, leaving behind a bag with five salmon in it.
With the use of night vision goggles, Fisheries officers saw the three men standing in a bog for one hour before they moved, at which stage the officers apprehended them. Coyle was wearing a balaclava, the court heard.
The five salmon were sold for €170 and the proceeds given to the RNLI.
Defending solicitor for both men was Michael Bohan. He told the court Coyle is a 30 year old married father of three with a fourth child due. He said Coyle, who has no previous convictions, has ‘no intention of indulging in this conduct in the future’….

SCIENTISTS ARE RELEASING thousands of eels into the River Lagan system in Northern Ireland, in a bid to boost the number of the species present.
According to the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute, an experimental stocking exercise has already been carried out using glass eels (young eels) sourced from the River Severn.
The project was and paid for by the Lough Neagh Fisherman’s Co-operative Society, owners of the largest wild eel fishery in Europe….
Ian Powell reports from Blackwater Lodge on the Munster Blackwater where 3 salmon were caught before lunch yesterday…
14/04 We already have 3 fish reported by 13.00 today – one each from three of the upper beats. This is already the Best Day of this Season so far!
The river below the Lodge @ 12.30pm today on a beautiful sunny day. Ballyduff gauge height 0.64m. Clarity 5 feet. Perfect conditions! Air temperature between 15 – 20ºC.
Declan Burke took his First Ever springer – a 12 pounder on fly from Woodstream. Ronan Brennan had his first a fly he had tied himself with a 9 pounder from Bridgetown and Daniel Kolomanski had a 6 pounder from Killavullen on spinner.
Conditions are absolutely perfect with the height now good for fly on almost all beats. The water temperature is at 49ºF or 9.5ºC – and the clarity is about 5 feet.
The Mohill hinterland is dotted with numerous lakes, rivers and canals which all hold a fantastic stock of coarse fish. It is no coincidence that the world-renowned “King Of Clubs” competition is held in the area on an almost annual basis and if coarse angling is your preference then this region has to be one of Irelands top destinations. However, if you are a trout angler and your preference is to throw a fly, then your options were somewhat limited… Leitrim Observer, 14/04/14.
