More Trout Tips and Trips from Eamonn Conway

Top angling guide and casting instructor Eamonn Conway had an outing this week on the Monaghan Blackwater. He reports that a light frost from the previous night made fishing slow in the morning. Nymphing techniques worked best as the morning progressed and the fishing picked up as well. Alot more trout were came to the net by using New Zealand style nymphing technique just to get the best from dry fly and the nymph. Eamonn advises that it’s a fantastic method for any river and is particularly good on the Blackwater because there are plenty of tight spots, eddies, bank over hangs and undercuts to get the fly into where the trout are stationed waiting to pounce. There were not a whole lot of olives hatching on the morning but the trout were still in good taking form.

Spare the rod on angling licensing – Irish Times

The Government has been taking soundings among angling organisations on how Inland Fisheries Ireland might manage, fund and protect a valuable national resource. Draft proposals involving an annual charge, an angling register, identity cards and a penalty points system have been produced. The Angling Council of Ireland, representing most angling federations, supports the initiative. But it has been rejected by some trout and pike organisations which are threatening a repeat of the so-called “rod war” of 1987-89.

Most countries operate a licensing system for all forms of angling. It establishes a basic register of fishermen. After that, other charges may apply. Rules dictate where and how many fish may be killed and there are size limits and penalties for illegal behaviour. Salmon licences and conservation rules apply here. But, unlike neighbouring jurisdictions, there is no general register of anglers and little enforcement of regulations….

Concern over untreated sewage flowing into Shannon Estuary – Limerick Leader

Limerick Leader - Warning over sewage flowing into the Shannon Estuary
Limerick Leader - Warning over sewage flowing into the Shannon Estuary

“Raw” sewage is still being pumped into the river Deel, even though the EPA set a deadline of January 1 this year for the installation of a new waste water treatment plant in Askeaton

Local councillor Kevin Sheahan has called on Irish Water to provide a new sewage treatment plant for the town.

“To see raw sewage in the river that runs through my town is a national disgrace,” he said at this month’s meeting of the Rathkeale electoral area.

Cllr Sheahan pointed out that the town was located beside the Aughinish Rusal plant – “one of the biggest rate payers in the county” – and yet money had not been made available for a new sewage treatment plant. He claimed that to ask people in Askeaton to pay property tax and water charges when they had such an inadequate sewage system was “nothing short of daylight robbery”.

Cllr David Naughton, who is based in Ballysteen on the banks of the Shannon estuary, said he had seen a severe deterioration in the quality of the water in the estuary over the past 25 years. Sewage was flowing into the estuary, not just from Askeaton but also from Pallaskenry, Foynes and Shannon airport, he added….

Irish Angling Update – 10/04/14

The lovely dry but sometimes cool weather brought a lot of anglers out on many of our rivers, loughs and at sea in the past week.  This spring has been so good in comparison to the wintry conditions which prevailed here in Ireland last year. Conditions around the country are variable with high water levels on many waters but very low or dropping water levels elsewhere.  Small belts of intense rain showers and cool easterly winds all impacted on fishing in some areas but the anglers did enjoy some exceptional fishing and hopefully the good season will continue.

There was a lot of salmon activity this week and better salmon fishing was reported from Lough Melvin but at the River Drowes nearby, there was less salmon recorded this week but fish up to 10 lb. were taken.  At Ballisodare, on the first week of the season, 13 salmon were reported for the week.  Over in Co. Mayo, two nice salmon up to 15 lb. were caught at Beltra.  At Carrowmore in the North West, salmon fishing improved greatly with the Thunder and Lightning Fly proving effective.  Fishing is generally still quiet on the River Moy but a few fish were reported. At last water levels dropped at the Galway Weir and Dave Lenihan caught the first salmon of the season. It was another great week on Lough Currane, the highlight of which was fine specimen sea trout of 11 lb. for an American visitor and an 11.5 lb. fish for regular Dutch visitor Tim Van der Lann.  A few salmon were reported from the Bandon River in Co. Cork. Up on the River Gweebarra, the first salmon of the season was recorded and on the Cloghan fishery on the River Finn, there was several nice fish reported.  Up on the Lackagh, two salmon up to 11 lb. were recorded.  Down in Wexford, there was some very fine spring salmon fishing reported including fish up to 20 lb.

It was another good week on Lough Sheelin with some great trout up to 7 lb. recorded.  It is nice to report very good river brown trout fishing from the River Boyne at Bective where trout to 3.5 lb. were recorded.  Lough Doon near Lough Arrow was in the news this week producing some excellent trout fishing in the past week. Blustery conditions affected fishing on Lough Arrow for some of the week but nonetheless, some good trout were reported at a competition at the weekend.  The annual media competition at the Annamoe Fishery in Co. Wicklow and journalists enjoyed a great day’s fishing at the venue.  Down at the Waterford reservoirs, some fine brown trout were taken by an angler guided by angling guide Jason O’Riodan.  The ITFFA International Team Fish Off was fished on Lough Lene and the competitors enjoyed excellent trout fishing and a team was picked from the winners to represent Ireland in forthcoming internationals.

There is still some fantastic pike fishing reported and 14 year old Aaron Barry caught a magnificent 28 lb. pike while fishing with angling guide Kenny Sloan in Co. Mayo.  Angling guide Bodo Funke had fishing clients out on Lough Derg and waters near Boyle and they enjoyed some fantastic fishing with many pike over a metre recorded with a best fish of 112 cms.

Emmet Hope with his specimen Pouting
Emmet Hope with his specimen Pouting weighing 1.365kg is our ‘Catch of the Week’ winner

After very little sea angling activity in recent weeks it is nice to report that there was plenty of catches reported in the past week.  Another 14 year angler fishing in Killala caught a fine specimen Pouting of 1.365 Kilos while fishing with skipper Donal Kennedy and as there was none recorded in 2013 he wins our ‘Catch of the Week.  Flounders made up the majority of catches at the Galway Buccaneers Shore master anglers series in Connemara. Charter skipper Siegy Grabher reports from Valencia Island that he had his first party of anglers out at the weekend and they enjoyed some excellent fishing for a range of species. Up in Sligo, skipper Daryl Ewing reports that they have started to catch mackerel so signs for an improvement in the deep sea fishing look promising.  Angling guide John Quinlan reports from Kerry that they caught a few bass last week in poor fishing conditions but it looks to improve in the coming weeks.  Angling guide Sid Jones reports from Wexford that shore fishing is improving when he caught six different species including bass from the shore in the past week.  Angling guide Richie Ryan reported that he has recently completed some Youtube clips of catching pollack on fly which you can link into in this week’s update.

There was some coarse angling news this week with some fine roach reported from Lanesborough hot water stretch even though fishing was described as very tough because there is no hot water coming out the power station.  A small competition on Lough Sillan produced some wonderful catches of fish for anglers fishing from the Ballybay Angling Association.  At another competition on Annagheirin Lake in Co. Cavan, young anglers took four of the five top places in a match organised by the Carrickmacross and Drogheda CACs.  David Byrne had a good session on Lough Muckno for a good catch of mainly roach by using light feeding methods.

Despite the promised change in weather next week anglers are now out in force catching fish from all waters on inland loughs, rivers and at sea and we will have more news next week on the best of Irish Fishing,

Tight lines especially in Ireland

Sheelin's grand national starts sluggish and finishes on a high!

Lough Sheelin Angling Report By Brenda Montgomery, IFI – March 31st to April 6th, 2014

The man who knows all about trout does not exist, although you have probably met him ….. Samuel G. Camp 1911

Lough Sheelin, April 5th 2014Lough Sheelin, April 5th 2014

With the clocks moving forward by an hour last Sunday, Sheelin matched the sluggish but welcome adjustment to Summer time by producing sporadic catches of trout which improved significantly as the week progressed.

Lough Sheelin’s fishing this week could well be compared to last Saturday’s Grand National because as other trout lakes featured throughout the week, reporting bigger and better catches, Sheelin remained quietly in the background and then suddenly as the weekend approached this lake picked up and drove straight through to the finish with Gary McKiernan’s ‘Pineau De Re’ – a fabulous trout of over 7 lb. caught using wet flies.  And one of those pre-race comments about that winning horse is very applicable to Sheelin ‘beautiful but must be taken seriously’.

At the moment it feels like a waiting game on this great lake – anglers are waiting for water levels to go down and temperatures to increase and remain constant.  They are also waiting for the olives and buzzers to arrive and some real fly feeding to happen on Sheelin. To be fair this lake has never been renowned for its duck fly hatches, other lakes take that title and although there have of course been sporadic hatches of this fly in sheltered bays and when there was a bit of heat in the day the Sheelin trout have only been vaguely interested in the pro-offered smattering of this fly on the water surface with the main hatches staying in the surrounding shoreline bushes due to the inclement weather – it’s  just not enough to get those trout up to the surface.  The fish particularly since the increase in water levels after Wednesday’s down pour are still feeding down low with no incentive to bring them up to even sub surface, we need those olives and buzzers which hopefully will oblige in a few weeks’ time. Our trout for now are feeding on larvae at the bottom of the lake and small shoals of silver fish in the shallows along the washed out shoreline.  The water looks black and ominous but anglers need have no doubt that beneath that gloomy exterior lies a trout stock second to none.
The Humungus and Minkie’s still rule supreme as being the top trout catchers on the lake for this week but the Dabblers are catching up and featuring more and more in the trout returns.

Other flies that featured were the Sooty Olive, Black Pennell, Glister Ollie, Golden Olive Bumble, Connemara Black, Chilly Dabbler, Peter Ross Dabbler and Claret Dabbler.  An interesting new comer was the Banana Split Dabbler which landed its user a nice 2 ½ lb. trout on Saturday.

Because of the feeding patterns of the trout the best line to use is a di 3.  The di3 is a good steady fly line with a sink rate of 3 inches per second, it’s a great line for searching out feeding fish at a medium depth with great control but anglers should remember that in the next week or two things are going to change and this line will not be good as the trout become surface and sub surfaces feeders.

What we are now waiting for are the lake olives. These insects belong to the Ephemeridae family of which the mayfly is the largest member. These beautiful flies have large upright wings and long wispy tails. Olives are much smaller than mayflies and there are many different species in Ireland.
