Some fine Trout reported from the River Boyne

Fine River Boyne Trout

Damien Willis  send us this report on recent trout fishing on the River Boyne…

With water temperatures hovering around 40 degrees Fahrenheit, monofilament lines tend to stiffen in cold water, often rising to the surface, so it is best to use a thinner alternative. Favorable river conditions to work your flies in spring are behind midstream obstructions and around current breaks.

The most productive hotspots for early spring trout are deep undercutting banks, and especially under trees and overhanging vegetation. You may lose a fly or two, but it is worth a cast. The most popular early season flies for the trout are a Teal and Black, Coachman, Bibbio & Hot orange, Black Pennell and a Connemara Black, though any black fly seems to work well especially if it has a touch of orange and/or white. A Sooty Olive, Fiery Brown, and Golden Olive also produce good results.

Pictured above are some great shots taken at a private location on the River Boyne – A great turn out at this year’s Bective Anglers fry and fly. Greg Muldowney came out on top in the Senior Competition accepting the presentation of the Anthony Mulvany Memorial Cup from Darren Mulvany. The highlight of the day & probably the Season was provided by Junior Member 14 year old Matthew Tackney who landed a massive River Trout of 3 lb. 12 oz.

East winds and cool conditions affect the mood of salmon on the Drowes

Lindsey Clarke reports from the RIVER DROWES – Monday 31st March to Sunday 6th April 2014.

The Drowes had fair water levels once again this week. There was heavy rain during the middle of the week but this did not raise the river too much. There were a number of salmon caught during the week and given the levels, we would have expected more to be caught. Maybe the east winds and cool conditions affected the mood of the salmon? On Tuesday, P. McGowan recorded a salmon caught on prawn from The Washstones and K. McGowan also reported a salmon caught on prawn from The Washstones. On Wednesday, Julian Ciconte logged a salmon caught on prawn from The Grazings. On Wednesday, Marty O’Hara recorded a 10lb salmon caught on a Yellow Belly Devon Minnow from The Corry.

Sea Angling

On Saturday 5th April a party of anglers from Mullingar, Foxford and Sligo set out from Killala Harbour with Donal Kennedy, skipper of the Leah, for a day’sfishing in Killala Bay. The weather was dull but winds were light which bode well for the anglers’ first day out of the season. The first few drifts didn’t produce much but further out in the Bay over a drift of rocky ground a number of nice cod were caught along with some pollack. Later in the day the group went out a little deeper and several drifts produced more cod, pollack, pouting, ling, coalfish and cuckoo wrasse. The best of the cod was approx. 9lbs., with pollack up to 7lbs. and Ling up to 6lbs. Several of the drifts produced many pouting and it was good to see young 14 year old Emmet Hope from Mullingar catching a fantastic specimen pouting weighing 1.365kg!

Fisheries Information Manager Markus Müller sends in this brilliant photo of young Aaron Barry and tells us:

During the week, Adrian Barry and his son Aaron from Swinford made their way to Foxford to meet up with local guide Kenny Sloan for some pike fishing. Despite the difficult conditions with a cold northerly wind, pike were fairly active and feeding.  The group fished a number of waters including Derryhick Lake, Levally Lake and Lough Conn. The two anglers caught a good number of double figure pike but it was 14 year old Aaron who had the best fish of the trip with a whopping 28lbs. pike! Not bad for his first day’s pike fishing! Aaron’s next conquest will be a salmon on the River Moy when conditions settle.
