The Springers are starting to run the Finn in better numbers now and as a result the Cloghan Lodge Salmon Fishery saw more action last week
Chris Gallagher was unlucky to loose a nice fresh run fish around the 8-9lbs mark on Friday last from the Ivy Bridge beat on a flying C spinner.
Well done to Kevin Mc Crossan, Letterkenny who landed the first fish of the season from the Graveyard pool on the Ivy Bridge beat on Saturday.
The fish was estimated at 8 lbs and fell to a gold bodied Willie Gunn tube.
Estate Rod, Brendan Garland was next off the mark on Sunday with a fine fresh fish of at least 10 lbs.
This fish also came from the graveyard pool and fell to a Donegal Cascade tube.
Brendan Garland returning his fish
Other Estate rods, Warren Campbell and Shane Lockhead were unfortunate to hook and loose a fish each on Sunday from the Grilse Streams.
We also have reports of other fish downstream from the various Association waters, including David Houlker who had a lovely fish just over 12lbs from the Glebe Club water. There was also a nice fish of at least 10lbs from the Finn anglers water and a cracking fish estimated at 15 lbs from the Ballybofey & Stranorlar Club waters on Monday of this week.
The water is holding below 3 ft on Davy’s Rock, Ivy Bridge, 2ft Glenmore Bridge at the moment and we should continue to see numbers of fish steadily increase this week.
Permits and guiding service for the Cloghan Lodge Salmon fishery are available here from me at the Angling centre.
Ryan Neeson landed the first Salmon of the season from the Lackagh last Sunday afternoon.
The fresh sea- liced fish, estimated at 6 – 7lbs fell to a holo silver casade tube in the Grilse Pool.
The water height on the guage was running at 9 and 2 other fresh fish were also reported hooked and lost last week with more fish seen running through to Glen Lough.
Ryan Neeson with the first Salmon of the season
The temperatures are trying hard to rise and with any kind of decent conditons, more fish cant be expected off the river and indeed Glen Lough !
Under the IFI legislation, the entire Lackagh system is strictly catch & release for salmon angling.
…and back you go…
The only allowed methods are spinning or fly fishing with single barbless hooks and stictly no bait fishing.
The Creeslough & District Angling club in conjunction with the IFI have carried out some fantastic habitat enhancement over the last 2 seasons. The Lackagh river itself is arguably the most accessable in the whole country with the recently completed walkways and stiles making for a safer and more enjoyable angling experience.
Permits for the Lackagh fishery are available from Sweeney’s filling station, Termon.
The Lough Swilly Angling Centre also offers a comprehensive guiding service for the Lackagh and Glen Lough.

Eamonn Conway reports that the River Fane is in perfect fishing condition at the moment, the flow and water clarity is just right, the trout are in good taking form and they are responding well to the dry fly for this time of year. There are good hatches of olives happening throughout the day and the trout are feeding very well on them. While guiding on the river over the past few days my clients have been catching a lot of trout on nymphs, New Zealand style, dry fly and also on traditional wets, the nymphs were doing most of the work, the Fane is worth a cast over the next week or so before the water gets too low.

A Lovely Fane Trout for Eamonn’s Happy ClientWild Fish in Fantastic Surroundings and Great Company. What More Could an Anglers Want?
18/3/14 Lough Currane was on the quiet side today, after 8 year old Alana’s first Salmon yesterday. Wind W fresh to strong with good cloud cover.
19/3/14 Lough Currane was on the wild side and there were no boats fishing the north side, so we cut across to the south via the Bull, and leave the last word to a renowned gillie who will remain nameless and I quote, s*** wind man, squalls in every direction and useless. Thanks for the report Man, oh sorry Terence Jnr.
20/3/14 One boat did venture out in the wild conditions, and I can say without any fear of contradiction he failed miserably in his duties. Wind wilder than yesterday with a strong WSW wind blowing down the lake. Now to the fundraising department and no its not for the angling association it’s a much better cause, Mike O’Dwyer’s wife, Mrs. Sara O’ Dwyer is running in the 2014 Virgin Money London marathon, you can donate on her web site at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/SaraODwyer and just for the record, Sara is running for Children with cancer UK. That reminds me, I said I would donate, will you please, it’s a great cause. Talking of causes Sara is fundraising this Sunday in a 5k run, starting at the Waterville community centre, at 11.30am.
21/3/14 Again Lough Currane was on the wild side with a strong westerly blowing down the lake and my Noble Anglers were left standing looking at the view.
22/3/14 No boats ventured out this morning because of a strong NW wind storming across the lake, followed by long spells of hale showers, come afternoon 2 boats did venture out, and failed in their pursuit to produce my Noble Salmon.
23/3/14 There was some great action on Lough Currane in all departments, first to the Salmon department, Mr. Liam Ellis of Waterville logged his second Salmon caught on the troll, weighing in at 8 lbs, staying with the south side, local ghillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com also caught a 8 lbs Salmon on the troll late this afternoon and considering Frank, only went out after 4 pm and he was home just before 6 pm. Not bad what.
Frank Donnelly with a 8 lb. salmon caught on the troll.
Now we head for the north side and Salmon of the day and that goes to Mr. Anulal Hitmiang or as we call him Tam, of Waterville, who caught a cracker of a Salmon on the troll weighing in at 14 ½ lb.
Tam with a lovely 14.5 lb. salmon from Lough Currane standing beside the statue of ledgendary Kerry footballer Mick O’Dywer in Waterville.
Now we head back across the Lake to Coffee’s Bay and Game Fish of the day and that goes to Mr. John Allen of East Dean Village, Eastbourne, East Sussex UK, who caught the first specimen Sea Trout of 2014 weighing in at 9 lbs, caught on the troll with his good friend Mr. Jim Sayers of Waterville. On the weather front there was bright sunshine all day with very little wind.
John Allen from Easbourne, UK with the first specimen Sea Trout of the year weighing 9 lb. from Lough Currane.
24/3/14 Lough Currane was at a stand still with all fishing stations closed for a good reason, there was a strong SW wind blowing down the Lake. Staying with the weather, there was a good flood early this morning.

Rod Robinson from www.Loughcurrane.com reports on the first specimen Sea Trout of the year from Lough Currane

Lets hope we see more of these in the coming weeks!
The Tourism Development Association is delighted to announce a brand new event for the competitive Pike Fishing calendar. The new event will take place on the weekend of the 12th and 13th of April 2014, on Upper Lough Erne. The event will be boat based, with either 1 or 2 persons per boat. Cash prizes will be awarded per boat, with the winning boat taking a guaranteed £1,500 and second placed boat taking £1000. Additional entry fees will make up the remaining prize pot, up to 15 cash prizes, dependant on the number of entries.
The event is supported by the Erne Anglers Club, DCAL and Fermanagh District Council, who are also involved in organising the event. Barry Flanagan, Tourism Project Officer for the Upper Lough Erne Region comments “Following the successes of the World Championships Lures event and the Lough Erne Pike Classic in 2013 there is no doubt that Lough Erne is a World Class angling location and we aim to showcase a new section of Lough Erne to our visiting anglers. The stunning location has huge potential for a competitive Pike fishing event with local anglers and holiday maker’s alike reporting impressive Pike caught in this area regularly last year.” The event will be based at Lisnaskea Boat Club, where parking will be provided and the boats will be launched. Food and beverages will also be provided in the Club House over the course of the weekend.
Guide Jason O’Riordan of Game Fishing Ireland eventually got to Lough Corrib but the weather proved harsh. Nevertheless Jason did well. He tells us:
We spent the weekend on Lough Corrib. As usual we stayed in Grasshopper Cottage, Dooros. For us, this is an ideal guesthouse, overlooking the lake, and where the owner knows his fishing on the Lough. It is also just over the road from where our good friend Tom Sullivan lives. He is always a great help to us when we go to Corrib. We like fishing around Cornamona, you can generally find a sheltered bay somewhere!
The start of the weekend was horrible weatherwise, bitterly cold and strong winds. We knew from last year that with little duckfly hatching in such conditions the fish might be feeding on hoglouse.
This proved to be the case as is evident from the photo above, and we caught on dabblers and hoglouse patterns.
The Sage One 7wt performed great for pulling wets. I think the 6wt would be an ideal “all round” rod.
The forecast was much better for Sunday – warmer weather, light winds, and no rain. Time to change tactics. We set up the 7wts with smaller wets (duckfly emergers). The fast intermediate lines were replaced with slow intermediates and hover lines. On the Sage One 5wt it was a full floater and buzzers. I also prepared a leader with 2 CDC dry duckfly patterns in case there was a good rise.
Conditions were very good and a lot of fly hatched. We caught on wets and buzzers.
After lunch the lake went calm and we spotted trout rising in one corner of a bay. We switched from buzzers to dries. I hooked one trout on a shuttlecock fly but failed to land it. It was a good days fishing where we kept two trout that we had spooned. They had been feeding on buzzers rather than hoglouse.
Lessons learned:
– there is no guarantee of good conditions in March so be prepared for tough weather and fishing
– you have to adapt to the conditions and what the trout are likely to be feeding on
– when the conditions are good the potential for great fishing is certainly there
– make sure your digital camera is properly charged for the weekend so that you don’t have to use your phone (oops!)
We will back again around the same time next year. Hopefully we get a full weekend of good weather.
