The garden of Wicklow captures the rainbows

Rathcon Lake fishing
Rathcon Lake fishing

West Wicklow fishery Rathcon held it’s 1st qualifier last Sunday November 3rd.  This 8.5 acres rainbow trout fishery is fly fishing only and open all year round. Dermot tells us:

A total of 40 fish were landed throughout the 4.5hrs fishing. The 1st hour was unusually quiet but it picked up in the early afternoon. All flies were allowed this year and the snake proved to be pretty effective.

Dave McBride and Freddie Miller both got off to good starts with fish at their first three pegs. Darius Simcus was using a team of bloodworms and was catching up on the early leaders.

Plenty of fish were also lost mostly through using barbless hooks and a couple of decent fish were landed of around 7-8 pounds. The first five qualify for the final in March. Many thanks to Southside Angling for sponsoring a prize. The next heat will be in Jan 2014.

RESULTS

  • 1st Darius Simcus – 7 fish

Recovery Index – Independent.ie

The last few weeks may be some of the wettest we’ve seen this year – but that hasn’t put us off our fishing trips. The number of fishing rods sold on the online auction website, eBay, jumped by about 11 per cent over the last month. Even if more of us are fishing to escape the stresses of modern life, this is a good sign. If we can afford to spend money on our pastimes and hobbies, it suggests our disposable income is increasing. More disposable income will lead to greater consumer spending, which is good for our economy…..

A fun day with a circus of fish in Cork

The circus comes to Cork
The circus comes to Cork

Cian Twomey of Boat Angling Ireland fame, headed out on his boat CianFisher last Wednesday off Crosshaven and reports:

Well met Pat at Crosshaven to head out for the day and decided to hit a few marks the first was very productive with fish coming over the gunnels at a good rate . With big whiting for Pats supper we headed to a different mark for Plaice. The water was very murky and visibility was very poor but the doggies were the blondest I have ever seen. With nice size dabs coming in twos and threes we quickly started to run out of frozen mac as there was no fresh macs caught throughout the day. A good day in all with myself catching the most species but after Pat and Cian bullied me all day about being the second mate I decided to get my payback and alter a photo as only the real captain can.

Cork: A river roars and gurgles during walk – Irish Examiner

ROARING WATER RIVER WALK, WEST CORK
ROARING WATER RIVER WALK, WEST CORK

WE set off from the car park opposite the imposing church. A new bridge, with less character but more strength, carries the N71 over the river just above it. We walk downriver from here.

Opposite, is Kilcoe National School, built in 1897. A large Irish yew, probably as old as the school, spouts through the asphalt in the yard. On the stream, pond skaters dash about the surface on splayed legs. On sunny days, their feet are reflected and magnified as four smudges on the sandy bottom, uncannily like the paw prints of an invisible, underwater dog.

As the road descends following the stream, we are separated from the water by bracken and impenetrable breaks of self-seeded trees, largely willows. The stream gurgles in a deep gully on our left, perhaps roars (hence the name?) when in flood. A road rises steeply to the right as we reach a white house; we pass it and cross the small bridge…..

Spoilt for choice with the wonderful Irish Angling Festivals of 2014 to look forward to !

Active Irish Angling looks ahead to 2014 and gives us a list of Ireland’s Match Open Angling Festivals 2014:

It is the longest list of formal angling competitions open to all anglers, used both by pleasure anglers wanting avoid clashing with pre-booked venues and the huge numbers of match anglers now coming to Ireland.   Altogether there are 40 events from May until October and a massive increase in the 1970’s and 80’s when there were just the “Magnificent Seven” major events.

The Dublin Angling Initiative (DAI) is, in my opinion, the greatest innovative project ever to come on the scene in relation to promoting angling to the younger generation. Since its inception some 18 years ago, hundreds, indeed thousands of teenagers have received a thorough grounding in all aspects of angling. Surely, that is something they will never forget.

Established in 1995 under the auspices of the Central Fisheries Board (now Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI)), the initiative continues to grow in stature and is now firmly established and acknowledged as spearheading the drive to bring young people into the sport in the inner and greater Dublin area…..

Quality and quantity at Oaklands lakes, next match November 17th

Oaklands lake is still fishing well with good catches of carp and skimmer bream which have packed on some weight over the summer.  Weighing up to 1.5lbs now there tough fighting fish should provide great winter sport for anglers.

Thomas Quinlin aged 15 is a regular to Oaklands and can vouch for the quality and quantity of the fish.  He has been a constant winner over the summer.  Oaklands next match is on November 17th.  Draw is at 9.30am with the fishing commencing at 11am.
