Susan Brown
Susan, from Lisburn in Co. Antrim has represented Ireland on seven occasions. She became interested in fishing at a very young age when she went mackerel fishing one summer with a group of friends and became hooked on it! Her favourite fly-fishing venue is The Straid in Ballyclare because it was the first place she cast a fly. She also holds the position of honorary secretary in the Irish Ladies Fly Fishing Association.
Jenny Casey
Jenny, from Clane, Co. Kildare, began fishing at an early age. After demanding a fly rod for her eight birthday, because she was jealous of her cousins going fishing with her father and uncle she felt she was missing out. She was able to get plenty of practice as the river Liffey ran through the family farm near Clane. This will be Jenny’s second Cap and is also the International Treasurer of the 2013 International Ladies Fly Fishing Committee. She also finished her degree this year in the National University of Ireland Maynooth with double honours in History and Geography and plans to follow her mother in the teaching profession. When not studying she can be seen in the K.Club as one of the resorts Gillies showing guests the art of fly fishing.

At the tender age of seven, Mary landed her first fish, a trout, from the river Blackwater and from that she literally became hooked! The achievement of making the Irish Team is down to the time she spent honing her fly fishing skills with the Kenmare Fishing Club. She is looking forward to the Competition and hopefully landing the trophy!

He met a guy called Don Cantrell who had a fly tying business in Tralee and with his help and a few fly tying books he started to improve. Eventually he started to supply local tackle shops and private individuals, many of which keep coming back. He has sent flies all over the world and he has tied for some of Irelands most successful anglers. He is starting up a Bait, Flytying and Guiding business, after successfully completing a Marine and Countryside Guiding Course at IT Tralee. This will be Allens first time accompanying the Irish Ladies Team as a fly tier.

Drogheda Coarse Angling Club Take on the Brothers Lake in Carrickmacross

Winner Shane O'Reilly with Two Lovely Tench at Yesterday's Competition

Mark Carolan of Drogheda Coarse Angling Club reports that on Sunday last the 12th of May eight dedicated anglers took to the banks of the Brothers Lake in Carrickmacross to take part in the third leg of Drogheda Coarse Anglers Club, “Battle on the Boyne,”spring/summer league. This weeks match was ran over five hours which made all the difference to some of the anglers. It was hard to put a direction on the wind today as it seemed to change every fifteen minutes. The wind put a ripple on the water at times but overall the lake was in good condition. Dave Ryan put together a very impressive bag of fish which included a P.B. Bream of 3lb 8oz.

A Personal Best Bream for Dave Ryan on the Brothers Lake on Sunday

Today’s best weight of 17lb 3oz, was put together by Shane O Reilly. Shane was one of the anglers who made the most of the extra hour, netting most of his fish in this time. He achieved this weight by float fishing the margins into four foot of water with sweetcorn on the hook. A good variety of fish graced the nets today, including, Roach, Skimmers, Hybrids, Eels, Bream, and Tench.

New sealiced fish make their way up the Slaney

As expected the fresh water during the week brought in a  run of new sealiced  fish. Although  fish were landed at Enniscorthy, Solsboro, Riversdale, Clohamon,  the Wood  and Kildavin many seemed to be turbocharged and heading upriver fast. This was borne out  by reports of 4 (or 5?) fish off the Tullow stretch between Friday and Saturday. Successful anglers included Andy Kelly (Kildavin), Bill Connolly (Clohamon), Teddy Synott (Riversdale) and Francis Connolly (Solsboro). It was not all easy fishing with 4 anglers on one beat (including the webmaster) seeing nothing all day while 2 miles up stream it was a red letter day  with 3 fish to one rod.

Scottish Fish fam had pesticide residue levels 400 times above approved limit

The Herald Scotland reported last week on the fact that Scotland’s environment agency has found 12 salmon farms pesticide residues above the approved level. One Marine Harvest site was reported as having levels over 400 times the approved level!

Inland Fisheries investigates dead fish find at Loughrea lake – Galway Bay FM

Inland Fisheries Ireland is investigating following the discovery of dead fish in Loughrea Lake yesterday.

Initial investigations suggest it’s a natural phenomena involving course fish only and is unlikely to be related to water quality.

Staff from Inland Fisheries Ireland went to Loughrea Lake yesterday after being alerted to the discovery of dead fish.

Upon inspection, they recovered approximately 100 dead perch.

No other species are involved.

Inland Fisheries Ireland is currently investigating the cause of the fish kill, which may be due to natural causes.

Samples have been taken and sent for laboratory analysis…

The weather dictated the fishing at Sheelin with mid week proving the best

Lough Sheelin Angling Report By Brenda Montgomery, IFI  May 6th – May 12th 2013

I still don’t know why I fish or
why other men fish, except we
like it and it makes us think
and feel.
Roderick L. Haig-Brown

‘An Angry Sky’ Lough Sheelin

Bank holiday Monday was disappointing despite what looked like ideal weather conditions – balmy with a slight breeze and not too sunny but it didn’t happen. Anglers however need not despair as with the increase in temperatures there has been a change and that change was seen on Monday night when there was a good hatch of duck fly which went out on to the lake at around 9pm.  Whether we are sick of it or not, it is the cold harsh weather that has slowed things down here, by as much as six weeks but things are finally progressing in the right direction.  For Sheelin the peak time for the mayfly coincides with the bloom of the white thorn or may blossom and so far the blackthorn which precedes the whitethorn is just out now so the mayfly is undoubtedly going to be late this year.  Anglers must remember that for the past two years the may fly was early on Sheelin  – last year the first hatch was May 9th but we had different weather and warmer water temperatures, Sheelin’s water temperature this week hovered around 6 -7 degrees but 10 degrees upwards is the ideal temperature for a may fly hatch.  Anglers need not panic as for Sheelin the may fly hatches don’t normally happen until the last week in May so it’s just a question of hanging on in there because with a spell of continuous warm weather Sheelin will come alive and will undoubtedly be the best place for trout fishing in Ireland.

Gary McKiernan of Loughsheelinguidingservices.com with his 5 ½ lb trout caught on May 9th on a dabbler

As the week progressed fly life increased with a good smattering of simulium on the water and encouraging sightings of olives, on Tuesday in the sheltered areas of the lake fish were sipping at the surface and some nice trout were taken for the first time on dry flies.  The flies that are having the most success are the brightly coloured wet flies, greens and reds with a sparkle threaded through the body.  The dabblers still rule though with the claret, green and peter ross taking top position.  The stimulators, minkies and humongous are still popular even as we head through the third month of the season. This lake and its fishing is governed by the wind and wind direction so it is important for anglers to take this into account, ideal fishing conditions are calm with a slight ripple.  Angling is not a rushed sport so by being in the calm affords anglers time to study the water and to see what’s happening and perhaps change fly when necessary.  The end of the week hit in with a disappointing bang with blustery cold south westerlies, temperatures dropping and frequent heavy showers of rain and sometimes hail causing the fly hatches to remain stubbornly in the bushes and making boating difficult in certain parts of the lake and although there was plenty of movement of trout, the high winds made it far too difficult to connect with them. The lake fished badly over the weekend and there were lots of disappointed anglers left on the shoreline resorting to just’ trying out outboards’ and bailing out boats. The weather has the final say on this great lake – there by the grace of god go I………………

Enda Hicky writes that they had a very successful Fisheries Awareness Day on the 11th of May in Daingean Co Offaly…

This was the very first time and event was held here and with the help of the Irish Angling Development Alliance and the local Grand Canal Water Sports and Leisure group it was a massive success.

Trying out pole fishing at Daingean
Trying out pole fishing at Daingean

We had up to 40 children along with parents attend and for the vast majority it was their very first attempt at fishing. A lot caught their first fish and we are now looking at starting up a new club to cater for these new anglers. One of the noticeable things was that the ratio of girls to boys leaned in the girl direction which is wonderful for the sport, in fact it was Saoirse Quinn who had the very first fish.

Everyone gets a go!
Everyone gets a go!

We would like to thank all those who made it possible, Geoff Quinn, Peter Walsh and Fergal Scully from the IADA and the committee of the GCWS&L plus the Castle Barna golf club and to Toomans Bait & Tackle for supplying free bait.

We will looking at running another similar event later in the year.

Thick lipped mullet on a lure in Cork Harbour

Cork Harbour Angling Hub report:

In quiet back waters of Cork Harbour mullet can be successfully targeted. LRF specialists, Cillian Farrell and Dan Gill, who have been pioneering kayak angling in the harbour over the last number of years, have turned their attention to targeting mullet on lures!!!

Yesterday afternoon, one such mission led to success. Cillian gives a brief account of what happened ‘….A quick LRF session on the last hour of the flood. Dan & myself had felt a bit claustropobic of late having being couped up studying. A short fishing trip was in order. The beauty of Cork Harbour is that there are accessible marks within a short distance. 7 minutes into the session I hooked this 2-3lb mullet, with a pink power isome fished on a 1g jig head. Dan hadn’t even set up by this stage. Unfortunately, that fish spooked the others. We did have a few follows later but it was great to catch a thick lipped on a lure!’

Well done, another one for the species count!!

40lb bags of Roach from Belturbet

Martin Lawson, from the Isle of Man spent 5 days fishing in Belturbet and Killeshandra areas. Martin was lucky with the weather and only two of the five days were wet and windy. Martin reports that he had some good 20kg+ bags from the platforms in Belturbet on the stick float and red maggot. He was fishing over ground bait, catching mainly roach with some weighing over the pound mark.

At the cut in Killykeen Forest Martin was on the pole with red maggot and corn. He was catching roach and hybrids using red maggot and the corn accounted for the bigger fish.
