Even though the weather has been very cold for the past month there are sea trout running. There are lots of sea trout in the estuary and now that the weather is warming up if we get a flood there will be a big run. There are some fish in the lakes. I saw one rise he was between six and seven pound weight.

Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association tell us:
2013 Season – 17th January to 30th September.
4th May 2013: The water level is now approaching 3 feet on the gauge at Johnston’s. Running clear after last nights rain.
No news of salmon from the Laune but during the week sea trout were caught on the fly to 4lbs.
No doubt there are fish running the river but it is still difficult enough to catch one.
Prospects: Excellent conditions for bank Holiday weekend. Fresh drop of water and running clear. Good chance of a sea trout to remember on the fly with fish in the system up to 4lbs. Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association

Rian Murphy aged 8 from Inchicore Dublin with his fantastic rainbow trout, caught on a recent trip to Lough Rowan
Fly fishing gaining popularity: Over the past few weeks, whilst out on the Club Lake (Lough Rowan), I have been impressed on the amount of club members (young and old) who have turned their hand to fly-fishing.
Unfortunately fly-fishing has a reputation for being very difficult to master and even a little elitist. Nothing could be further from the truth in my humble opinion. Yes, it can seem daunting at first, but with practice and repetition you shall soon get the hang of it. There is nothing better than getting expert tuition from the start, but as professional lessons are costly and it’s hard to come by a tutor in these parts, I have no qualms in suggesting a search on Google or YouTube. A link that I found to be very beginner friendly and more or less jargon free is www.flyfishingfromscratch.com. My own casting cannot be described as professional or as artistic as some of the anglers on these sites, but that is not the point, the point is that my methods work for me. Believe me, after a little practice you too shall develop your own style and with some luck be soon bagging a fish or two….

Comprtition Winner with Peter Cunningham, Boyne Angling Centre, Josie Mahon, Inland Fisheries Ireland, Mark Carolan, Drogheda Coarse Angling Club, John Murphy, Drogheda and District Angling Club and Minister Fergus O'Dowd TD
This year’s Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI), Fisheries Awareness Week (FAW) is taking place from 11th to 19th May. In order to promote this year’s ambitious schedule of events in the Drogheda area, two information days were held in Scotch Hall Shopping Centre, Drogheda, on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th April. Among the many activities on the stand over the weekend was a children’s colouring competition and lots of children submitted entries in the hope of winning one of the fabulous prizes on offer. Prizes included rods and reels, fishing poles and tackle boxes and even free bait for their first fishing trip.
This evening, Friday 3rd May, the youngsters and their winning entries all received their prizes from Minister of State at the Department of Communication, Energy and Natural Resources. Mr Fergus O’Dowd TD. There was great excitement as each winner in turn was awarded with their prizes. Minister O’Dowd was joined by Peter Cunningham from Boyne Angling Centre who sponsored the fishing tackle prizes and Mark Morgan of Scotch Hall who sponsored the event venue. John Murphy of the Drogheda and District Anglers Association and Mark Carolan of the Drogheda Coarse Angling Club, who’s angling clubs are running a number of events over the course of Fisheries Awareness Week, also attended the proceedings. Josie Mahon of Inland Fisheries Ireland also attended and made sure that things ran smoothly during the event.
Inland Fisheries Ireland thanked all of the sponsors of the FAW events including Peter Cunningham, Boyne Angling Centre, Drogheda, Colm Lynch, East Coast Angling, Navan and Scotch Hall Shopping Centre. IFI also expressed appreciation to the local community and people of Drogheda and surrounding areas and local businesses for their support. IFI also thanked the children and parents for their support and participation.
Inland Fisheries Ireland hopes that all the events running during Fisheries Awareness Week will provide the people of Drogheda and the surrounding areas with the opportunity to learn more about recreational fishing and how to get involved in angling.
There is lots of fishing available locally so why not come along to one of the free fishing events during Fisheries Awareness Week or join the Drogheda and District Anglers or Drogheda Coarse Anglers Clubs and “give angling a go”!

Waterford City and County Trout Angling Association Treasurer Pat Smith
Waterford City and County Trout Angling Association report:
Pat Smith our treasure who is a member of the Irish International Disabled Anglers Fly-fishing team, has just been made president of the organisation. This was his first trip out on Knockaderry this season, the over wintered rainbow fell to a Cruncher fished on an intermediate line. Both lakes have been stocked today with 1.3 Kilo rainbows and browns. These should be cormorant proof and with careful Catch Photo and release should provide excellent surface sport when the summer arrives!

A very happy Andy Kelly with his 20lb salmon from the Slaney
Andy Kelly, fishing at Clohamon on Tuesday landed the second 20lb plus fish to come off the Slaney in 2 days. The 38″ long 18.5″ girth fish estimated at circa 21lbs was the largest off the beat in over 20 years and Andy’s personal best. This super fish was landed on a Monkey tube stripped across the surface on a floating line. Andy had another fish earlier in the year estimated at 16+ on the same technique!

Fishing on Day 2 of the Waterways Ireland Classic Fishing Festival 2013
Summer has started according to the calendars, though Spring seems to only taking hold in the last few days. The unquestionably warmer and more settled weather saw a huge increase in angling activity all across the country and there are plenty of encouraging reports from all branches of our sport. Coarse angling has picked up a few gears at last and sea angling too seems to be turning a corner as water temperatures increase.
Paul Strange wins Catch of the Week with this magnificent 209lb common skate
Charter boat fishing is off to a great start this year and we have reports from north and south of the country. This week catch of the week goes to the biggest fish reported – a huge skate from Red Bay estimated to weigh 209lbs caught by Paul Strange who already had a skate of 139lbs earlier on the trip. At Kinsale good fishing has also been reported and anglers on the Silver Dawn met a lot of ling including one specimen of 27lb. A group of Dutch anglers had great fishing in Valentia too, and they had literally hundreds of pollack and coalfish. At a competition out of Kilmore quay last weekend fishing was reported to be good and one angler recorded an unusual fish – a lemon sole, the first reported to our offices in a number of years. Shore anglers and small boat anglers also enjoyed good fishing with bass anglers in particular doing well. Marks from Cork Harbour, where 15 bass were caught in one session, to Inch Beach in Kerry, where a competition saw 47 bass to 49cm caught and released, produced some great fishing last week. East Cork marks and the Copper Coast are also producing bass. Anglers in Wexford are hoping to see bass fishing in their area pick up next.
Hatches are well behind on Corrib, with olives only making their first appearances this week. Some fish have been spotted feeding just under the surface, presumably on olive nymphs, although in the windy conditions hatching fly were difficult to observe. Mask last week could only be described as “hot and cold”. The low air temperatures and relentless northerly winds have kept both angling and fly hatches to a minimum. Recent reports from the Loughs Conn and Cullen suggest there is as yet no sign of any mayfly hatch, although good hatches of Duckfly, and increasingly Olives have been observed. At Lough Sheelin the weekend was a struggle with no sight of an olive or a decent buzzer on either day, that said some lovely trout to 7lbs were reported earlier in the week. Lough Derravaragh holds a reasonably good stock of quality wild brown trout. The lake is very much under fished for trout and is well worth a visit when angling conditions suit; at competition fished on the weekend trout to 4.5lb were recorded.
Two Italian anglers had some great pike fishing across the midlands and on Lough Ree and have vowed to return to fish again. Pike to 18lbs 4oz were recorded at a recent competition on Lough Glore. Tourist anglers fishing with Kevin Lyons in Longford had some nice pike on light fly tackle but one had a nice surprise waiting for him when he decided to switch to Roach dead bait. Trotting a float fished dead roach just off the bottom he hooked into what he thought to be a good pike but it turned out to be a cracking trout of 6lb.
Most importantly this week we want to make sure that all anglers reading this update are aware of the importance of safety when on the water. While angling is a sport everyone can enjoy there are steps that you can take to make sure all your memories remain happy ones. Please take time to read this information from Irish Water Safety ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend.
Tight lines, Myles Kelly Catch, Photo, Release
