This year’s Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI), Fisheries Awareness Week (FAW) is taking place from 11th to 19th May. In order to promote this year’s ambitious schedule of events in the Drogheda area, two information days were held in Scotch Hall Shopping Centre, Drogheda, on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th April. Among the many activities on the stand over the weekend was a children’s colouring competition and lots of children submitted entries in the hope of winning one of the fabulous prizes on offer. Prizes included rods and reels, fishing poles and tackle boxes and even free bait for their first fishing trip.

This evening, Friday 3rd May, the youngsters and their winning entries all received their prizes from Minister of State at the Department of Communication, Energy and Natural Resources. Mr Fergus O’Dowd TD. There was great excitement as each winner in turn was awarded with their prizes. Minister O’Dowd was joined by Peter Cunningham from Boyne Angling Centre who sponsored the fishing tackle prizes and Mark Morgan of Scotch Hall who sponsored the event venue. John Murphy of the Drogheda and District Anglers Association and Mark Carolan of the Drogheda Coarse Angling Club, who’s angling clubs are running a number of events over the course of Fisheries Awareness Week, also attended the proceedings. Josie Mahon of Inland Fisheries Ireland also attended and made sure that things ran smoothly during the event.

Inland Fisheries Ireland thanked all of the sponsors of the FAW events including Peter Cunningham, Boyne Angling Centre, Drogheda, Colm Lynch, East Coast Angling, Navan and Scotch Hall Shopping Centre. IFI also expressed appreciation to the local community and people of Drogheda and surrounding areas and local businesses for their support. IFI also thanked the children and parents for their support and participation.

Inland Fisheries Ireland hopes that all the events running during Fisheries Awareness Week will provide the people of Drogheda and the surrounding areas with the opportunity to learn more about recreational fishing and how to get involved in angling.

There is lots of fishing available locally so why not come along to one of the free fishing events during Fisheries Awareness Week or join the Drogheda and District Anglers or Drogheda Coarse Anglers Clubs and “give angling a go”!
