Youngsters Show the Art in Angling

Add active and imaginative minds to angling and see what you come up with! Young visitors to the Fisheries Awareness Week information days in Scotch Hall Shopping Centre in Drogheda over the weekend took part in a colouring competition and as you can see from some of the entries below, we are not short in any way on budding Picasso’s. A number of prizes sponsored by Boyne Angling Centre in Drogheda, East Coast Angling in Navan and Inland Fisheries Ireland will be awarded to winners of the competition later this week. Pictures below are displayed in no particular order.

Fishing rods crossed when the mayfly does appear it’s going to be the best ever for Sheelin

Lough Sheelin

Angling Report

April 22nd – April 28th

The trouble with fishing is that it is always better before you got there, and after you left.

Holywell, Lough Sheelin

Danny Murray with his 7 lb trout caught on April 22nd using a silver dabbler

Temperatures were good throughout the week hovering around the 12 – 15 degrees and although there is still no fly life worth talking about this lake is fishing well. Anglers report sporadic pitching of trout and hatching of buzzer but the weather is ‘knocking them on the head’. Monday and Tuesday were particularly good with our local ghilling services (loughsheelinguidingservices.com) making it all look so easy with their anglers pulling in 4 and 7 trout averaging 3 to 7lbs. Temperatures dropped to an overnight of 2 degrees on Friday and heavy showers of rain and hail with fresh gusty northwest winds dominated the weekend switching Sheelin’s fishing to challenging once more and freezing the daylights of anglers in the process.

The weekend was a struggle, a few may shucks were seen but they didn’t look fresh and no sight of an olive or a decent buzzer on either days. One trout that was spooned was stuffed to the gills with snails and zebra mussels so that gives us a strong indication as to what the trout are feeding on.

Sheelin is proving to be unpredictable as on days in areas when the wave suited perfectly nothing was happening in the drifts. Goreport, the Sailors Garden and around the Bog Bay appear to be the places were the fish are being caught with Michael Polin from Lurgan and Peter Boyle, Monaghan landing 5 trout between them the heaviest at almost 5lbs, all on the claret dabbler. The dabblers (peter ross, green and claret) are still in the lead with the sooty olives, silver invictas, march browns featuring as are the minkies, stimulators and humongous. A few new flies are appearing namely the Johnson, black pennell, blae & black and william’s favourite ……..dry fly fishing is not happening yet and it’s all down to the weather. It is hard not to become impatient as compared to last year some anglers were actually dapping the mayfly…this is undoubtedly going to be a late season for our mayfly and fishing rods crossed when the mayfly does appear it’s going to be the best ever.

Michael Pollin, Lurgan opened up his season on Sheelin with this beautiful 5 lb 1 oz trout which fell to a claret dabbler in Chambers Bay

The Gathering is coming to Crover House Hotel, Lough Sheelin on the weekend June 7th, 8th and 9th and as part of this the LSTPA are organizing a trout fly fishing competition on Lough Sheelin on Friday June 7th finishing up with a Bar B Q and awarding of prizes. Full details of this event will follow in the next weeks.

The popular Sheelin Classic trout competition now in its 9th year will be run on Lough Sheelin on Sunday June 9th 2013 – 11am to 6pm. This is a heaviest fish competition with a 15” size limit and only 2 fish per competitor.

This competition will involve an open draw for partners and entries must be in by May 31st. Entry fee is €70 for a boating angler and €90 a non-boating angler. Entry fee includes a meal in Crover House after the competition

There will be numerous prizes (up to 10) which include:

1st 19ft Sheelin boat & trailer & crystal & the coveted Davey O’Connor perpetual cup

2nd 5 hp 4 stroke outboard engine & crystal

This is a competition well worth marking in your diary and because of the popularity of the Sheelin Classic and to avoid disappointment, it is advisable to secure your entry sooner rather than later by contacting Noel McLoughlin at 087 2179460 for further information

A catch & release policy is actively encouraged on the lake at all times

Please remember anglers to abide by BYE-LAW 790 – we need to keep our small fish alive……………

Results for the Cavan CAC winter league finals

Conor McGarry
Conor McGarry was overall junior winner

Derek Gibbons reports on last weekend’s matches…

Cavan Coarse Angling Club fished the last match of their 2012/13 winter league yesterday on Lough Oughter. It was a cold day with a biting northerly wind, but we managed to find a sheltered spot and had the wind off our backs for the majority of the day. Some of us even got a slight facial tan with the sun beating down for most of the day, so it made it quite pleasant. The cold did put pay to any good bags however, with 2kg 450 grms being the best weight on the day. One angler (Peadar Harten) managed to hook and land a 6lb+ pike on double red maggot and took him 20 minutes to land on his canal pole rig! It was weighed and released unharmed.

The league was a tight run affair this time around. Two anglers could have taken overall first place in the senior and junior divisions on the final day. Results of the days match were as follows.

Derek Gibbons
Derek Gibbons was the overall senior winner
  • 1st Derek Gibbons – 2 kilo 450 grms
  • 2nd Darren Bayliss – 2 kilo 200 grms
  • 3rd Peadar Harten – 1 kilo 700 grms

With those results, the overall lead changed on the final table. The final standings of the 2012/2013 season are:

  • Winner: Derek Gibbons
  • Second: Tony Swift
  • Third: Peadar Harten

Junior league winners were:

  • Winner: Conor McGarry
  • Second: Josh Kavanagh
Conor McGarry
Conor McGarry was overall junior winner
Josh Kavanagh
Josh Kavanagh took 2nd place in the junior competition

I’d like to congratulate everybody on taking part. It was a tough end to the league as the past few months have been very hard for fishing, with biting winds, freezing conditions and flooded venues. I hope we see an improvement in our weather soon.

We will be running our league again later this year and into 2014, but will be starting it much earlier, to avail of better fishing for at least 3 months of this year. We also hope to run a few Open matches. Details of which will be posted on our club website and also on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/cavan.cac)

Safety warning to all anglers for the May Bank Holiday Weekend

The Irish Water Safety issued the following warning to all anglers:

FIVE PER FORTNIGHT DROWN IN IRELAND
MAY BANK HOLIDAY INCREASES RISK SO KNOW YOUR LIMITS
There are 140 drownings in Ireland every year – that’s over five per fortnight. As we approach the May Bank Holiday weekend, water safety should be prioritised by anyone coming close to coastline or inland waterways and when pursuing water-based or waterside activities to avoid the dangers of cold shock, hypothermia and drowning.
There are many reasons people drown yet on Bank Holiday weekends, people often become complacent and put themselves and their families in situations that result in injury or loss of life.
People have a responsibility to themselves and family to stay safe around water by knowing the dangers and learning from the situations that have led to tragic drownings in the past:

  • Always wear a Lifejacket when on water and ensure that it has a correctly fitted crotch strap.
  • Shore walkers should stay away from the edge and beach walkers should remain vigilant to the dangers of being stranded.
  • Ensure that you are fully trained and competent for your aquatic activity.
  • Be mindful of the safety of family and friends, especially children. Children are naturally curious about water and constant supervision is the safest way to avoid tragedy. Parents of primary school children should check if their local school has yet introduced Irish Water Safety’s PAWS programme – Primary Aquatics Water Safety, which teaches children all about staying safe around water. The program is now a component part of the physical education strand of the primary school curriculum and is key to reducing child drowning mortalities and injuries. Now is the time to instill good habits in time for the summer months ahead.
  • Anglers should be extremely vigilant when fishing from the shoreline of Atlantic swells.
  • Swimmers should swim parallel and close to the shore.
  • Alcohol should be avoided before or during any aquatic activity. On average, a third of drowning victims had consumed alcohol therefore it is best left until after your activity to celebrate.
  • In emergency situations, never hesitate to call 112.

Irish Water Safety encourages everyone to take swimming, lifesaving, survival and rescue classes – for further information click on www.iws.ie

Some nice coalies on a warm evening in Antrim

Steven's coalie
Steven's coalie

Lure angler Steven Neely from Co. Antrim headed out at the weekend with the intention of catching some sea trout.  Steven tells us:

“Earlier on in the day we had been discussing how long it had been since I landed a coalie and I reckoned it must have been at least four years ago! The plan was to meet up with Jonny and head out after some sea trout as the tide turned and started to push. It was a stunning day – sun was out, blue skies and the wind had dropped for the evening. If nothing else it was a pleasant night to be out on the rocks.
The mark looked promising. A strong current, back eddies and plenty of cover – things were looking good.

We had only arrived and  my Dad had a few knocks and bumps – trout? Jonny and I looked over to see the rod bent over and a minute later a plump little coalie landed.

It was great to finally get one on the lure gear and it lifted the spirits for the evening to come.

Steven's coalie
Steven's coalie

The rest of the night was peppered with coalies up to 2 lb taken on a mixture of small metals jigged near the bottom and small, 4 inch weedless shads rigged Texas style.
No sea trout sadly but great sport nonetheless and a nice confidence boost to what has been a rather grim few weeks.
Is this a sign that things are starting to change? Warm evenings, a few fish starting to show …… let’s hope it continues. ”

Slaney river Trust Report for the week to 28 April 2013

Fish Running Hard.

The good fishing continued over the week ended on Sunday the 28th with up to 30 fish reported fromTullow to Enniscorthy.  The warmer weather has encouraged fish to run to the upper reaches. One angler fishing below Tullow reported seeing good numbers of fish last Sunday (21 st April) and he and a fellow angler managed to land 4 and lost another. He also reported that other anglers on the beat below also landed fish.During the week at least one fish was landed in Kildavin and 3 more lost. Moyadie accounted 3 or 4 fish.
From there are reports from Enniscorthy of at least 7 fish landed, a number of them on the fly including this one from Joe Tumilson.

Successful anglers during the week included Peter Lynch and Teddy Sinnott who both had a fish at Clobemon, while both Kevin Clayton and Tom Tynan were on the score sheet again as were Andy Kelly and John Carroll. On Sunday Paddy Corcoran landed two fish at Clohamon, one of them in the mid teens, Saulius Satas had a fish of about 7lbs and Eanna Murphy, fishing at Farmleigh, landed his first ever salmon after losing two a couple of weeks ago.Jason O’ Brien had a fresh fish on Clobemon with both him and his father losing fish the day before With the warm weather the anglers are reporting fishing smaller flies on sink tip lines. The fly of the week was the yellow shrimp which accounted for numerous fish.

Ladies out fish the men April 29th, 2013

On two days during the week it was the girls who out fished the boys. On Tuesday 23rd Hannie Blake had a very good day landing two fresh fish and losing 2 others, one of them quite large which Hannie never saw despite playing it for a good ten minutes. Then on Thursday Margaret Downes landed two fresh fish of about 10 and 12 lbs.

Prospects for week  April 29th, 2013

The word form Enniscorthy is that fish are still arriving on each tide so prospects for May are good. Some beats require rain while others will enjoy the lower water and should start accounting for fish.

Mossy Browne had a red letter  fishing at Tombrick today with a small yellow shrimp on a floating line. After a fight that twice saw him out on the backing this sealiced springer, a cock fish estimated at circa 22 lbs fell off as Brian Hennesy got him into the net. This is a delighted Mossy’s best ever fish. There are some great quality fish on the Slaney this year. You can get a good idea of its size as it swims off.

216 anglers competing in Waterways Ireland Classic Fishing Festival

The 2013 Waterways Ireland Classic Fishing Festival kicked off today on the shores of Lough Erne, with a very respectable entry of 216 anglers casting their lines in the hope of landing a good catch and possibly a share of the £20,000 plus prize fund.

Following another cold winter, the Festival organisers are hoping that the recent slight increase in temperatures will encourage the fish to feed, so that catches will match up to last year’s results.

The leader board at the end of day one is made up mainly of seasoned Waterways Ireland Classic regulars.  Today’s top weight of 14kg 500g was caught on the Ely Lodge section by Manchester angler Steve Priestley, who also netted £500 for his efforts.  Second was the lone Fermanagh representative in the top four, Lisbellaw angler Gareth Williams with 10kg 450g from peg 11 on Lough MacNean.  Following closely in third place was Mick Vials from Rotherham who landed 10kg 250g, also from Lough MacNean.  Completing the top four was yet another Classic regular, Mike Taylor from York, with 10kg from the newly introduced Crom Boathouse section.

Unusually, few local anglers have made it into the higher placings.  Apart from Gareth Williams, the only other leading local is Enniskillen angler and tackle shop owner David Burleigh, who occupies tenth place.  However, previous Classic winner John Potters from Lisbellaw is not far off the lead with a first day total of 7kg 410g.

The action continues on Tuesday with the first day of the King of the Erne event and the next Classic fishing day is on Wednesday.  The organisers are hoping that the weather will warm up and that catches will improve as the week progresses.  All the anglers will line up again at the draw box on Wednesday morning, hoping to reel in the top prize of £5,000 and the Crystal Chalice, Diawa fishing tackle, or some of the many other cash prizes and trophies on offer.

The Classic is sponsored for the eleventh year by Waterways Ireland and is organised by Fermanagh District Council, in conjunction with the Inland Fisheries Division of the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure.

Drogheda Coarse Anglers Have Second Boyne Battle on Schoolhouse Lough in Monaghan

Two in a Row for Mark Heffernan on Shoolhouse Lough in Monaghan
Two in a Row for Mark Heffernan on Shoolhouse Lough in Monaghan

Mark Carolan reports that on Sunday last the 28th of April the second leg of the “The Battle On The Boyne” spring/summer league of the Drogheda Coarse Anglers Club took place on “Schoolhouse Lough” in County Monaghan. In total seven anglers took to the banks of this wonderful little lake slightly down on the last match but still a good number. The all in was called by Shane O’Reilly at 11:00am and the all out was called at 3:00pm. Despite the cold North wind and rain beating against most of the anglers everyone managed to catch. The lake was up about a foot from normal summer levels but was still in very good condition and colour for fishing. The best and only method used was the feeder cast into four foot of water at anything from 25 to 35 turns of the reel. The fish seemed to move about a lot and to stay in touch with them it paid to alter the distance of the cast. With a three foot hook length and a size 16 hook fished with a combination of maggot and caster and a cloudy groundbait the fish were hooked and brought to the bank. Species taken included roach, skimmers and hybrids. The day saw Mark Heffernan take a second consecutive section win and a second consecutive best weight on the day of 6lb 3oz. Also in the money was Mark Carolan who also had a section win. Well done to all the members who fished, particularly Alan O’Conor and Rod Coan on their first ever match. The next match will be on Sunday the 12th of May at the Brothers Lake Carrickmacross. Will Mark Heffernan make it three in a row, will Paul Murray make a big come back and beat all with guns blazing, or is there a dark horse who will wipe the boards!!!

The Drogheda Coarse Angling Club will be running two introduction to coarse angling events during Fisheries Awareness Week and details of the first event which takes place on Saturday 11th May can be found below. The club continues to actively recruit new members so if you are interested in joining this progressive club why not drop Secretary Mark Carolan an email marktheangler@gmail.com or give him a call on 087 2801178
